sex-offenders(AP) — A Nebraska man has been convicted of molesting a 6-year-old girl in Rhode Island in 2001 when his mother was the girl’s baby sitter.

The jury reached a verdict in an hour after a four-day trial in Providence County Superior Court.

Nebraskan Appeals Conviction in Baby’s Death

Ryan-Kozisek(AP) — A 32-year-old eastern Nebraska man found guilty of killing his 4-month-old daughter has appealed his conviction.

Ryan Kozisek’s filing earlier this week also appeals his sentencing order and an earlier denial of his motion for a new trial.

On Dec. 16 a judge sentenced the former Gresham man to 35 to 50 years in prison. A York County jury had found Kozisek guilty of child abuse resulting in the death of Kayley Kozisek. Kayley died at an Omaha hospital on Jan. 25, 2011, a day after Kozisek called 911 and said she wasn’t breathing.

Kozisek told authorities that his 2-year-old daughter fell off a stepping stool and landed on the baby. A doctor later said such an accident couldn’t have caused Kayley’s injuries.

Ice Forces Neb. Nuclear Plant to Shut Down

fort-calhoun-dry(AP) — The Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant in eastern Nebraska has temporarily shut down due to ice buildup.

Omaha Public Power District spokesman Jeff Hanson said the plant went offline Thursday morning after subfreezing temperatures caused ice buildup on one of six gates used to control water from the Missouri River. The buildup kept the gate from fully closing.

The plant was closed because all the gates must be functional in case of flooding. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified about the situation early Thursday after workers noticed the buildup hours earlier.

Hanson says workers have since cleared the ice and they are manually working on the affected gate. Once the affected gate is closed, the other gates can do the work and the plant can be back in service.

silo(AP) — A concrete grain silo in southern Nebraska has partially collapsed, but no injuries have been reported.

One of eight 150-foot-tall silos was involved in Tuesday afternoon’s incident at the CPI-Lansing elevator near Fairmont. Some of the grain spilled from the silo, which can hold 140,000 bushels of grain. The eight-silo operation opened in March.

Elevator employees had spotted a crack in the silo on Tuesday, but the concrete gave way before the workers could act.

Structural engineers are inspecting the silo to determine what went wrong and how the silo can be repaired.

The girl was bundled in warm clothes in her car seat. National Weather Service records say the area temperature ranged from 2 degrees up to 19 over the day.

Prosecutors are reviewing the case. The girl remains in her parents’ custody at their home in South Sioux City, Neb.
