Gimme a Five: Woman Gives Birth to Quintuplets at Omaha Hospital

methodist-womens-hospital(AP) — A Sioux City woman has given birth to quintuplets at an Omaha hospital.

She was on bed rest for more than 10 weeks before the babies were born at 28 weeks, or about three months premature. A team of 35 doctors and nurses delivered the babies.

The babies were about 2 pounds each. They’re named Marah, Christobal, Arleth, Jimena and Rosalyn.

The couple has two sons, ages 9 and 7.

Dr. Brady Kerr says the babies “primarily need to grow.”

The last quintuplet birth in Nebraska was in 2009.

Douglas County Reports First West Nile Case of 2013

mosquitoe(AP) — Health officials in Nebraska’s largest county say a 75-year-old man infected with the West Nile virus is their first case this year.

The Douglas County health department said Monday that the unidentified man has been hospitalized. Officials say he traveled recently to an area in Nebraska where mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus, and they believe he was exposed on that trip.

So far this year, no mosquitoes in Douglas County have tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Adi Pour, the county’s health director, says cases are typically reported around this time of year. Officials note that most people who are infected have no symptoms, or experience mild flu-like symptoms. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 years old or have weakened immune systems.

Problems with New Lincoln Pedestrian Bridge Costly

Pinnacle-Bank-Arena(AP) — Repairing the faulty pedestrian bridge near Lincoln’s new arena is becoming costly.

Investigating the failure of two of the bridge’s girders will now cost at least $84,000. The group overseeing construction of the Pinnacle Bank Arena approved a new contract with an engineering firm on Friday.

Whoever is responsible for the bridge problems will be expected to pay the repair bills.

The faulty girders in the $7.9 million bridge are expected to be replaced soon. Officials expect that roughly 5,000 people will use the bridge to cross from the arena to parking.

Lincoln Police say an intoxicated 22-year-old man fell off the bridge Sunday morning. His injuries were not life threatening, and he was ticketed for trespassing.
