Court Sides with Family of Utah Boy Killed by Bear

bear(AP) — The Utah Supreme Court has sided with a family that sued the state after a bear killed their 11-year-old son at a campground in 2007.

The court ruled Friday that a lower court erred in deciding the state was not at fault. The justices found that a bear shouldn’t be considered part of the “natural condition on the land” as the lower court ruled.

The ruling sends the case back to a lower court.

The family argued before the Supreme Court that Division of Wildlife Services workers should’ve warned them when they arrived at a campground in American Fork Canyon on Father’s Day 2007 that the site had been abandoned earlier that day because of a non-fatal bear attack.

Sam Ives was asleep that night when the bear ripped through his tent, pulled him out and killed him.

Jorgensen said he and Fisher had a disagreement inside an apartment unit where the tenant was not home. Jorgensen told authorities that Fisher shoved him as hard as he could down the stairs.

Fisher was later arrested and remains at the county jail.

A surveillance video showed Fischer repeatedly punching passenger Torrance Rose on March 23. Fischer also is shown dragging Rose off the bus and leaving him on the roadway.

Fischer said he had told Rose he was on the wrong bus but that Rose didn’t seem to understand. Fischer said he’d felt threatened by Rose and pressed an emergency button on the bus seeking help before the confrontation.

Program Lets Scouts Turn Each Other Into Zombies

boy-scouts(AP) — Participants at the Boy Scouts of America’s National Jamboree are turning each other into virtual zombies as part of an educational game that Virginia Tech researchers designed to show how disease spreads.

The Virus Tracker program combines technology with the game of tag.

At the Jamboree, Scouts earn points by “infecting” other players through bar-coded labels.

Codes can be activated at scanning stations or by troop leaders whose smartphones have the Virus Tracker app. The goal is to stay human. Individuals and troops that amass the most points each day win.

Scout Colin Slavin from Germantown Hills, Ill., says the chance to turn other Scouts into zombies is “really cool.”

Kristy Collins of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech says about 3,000 Scouts have participated.

Fremont Postal Worker Indicted for Stealing Money

usps(AP) — A former U.S. postal worker in Fremont has been federally indicted on charges that he stole money, then lied about it in reports.

Federal officials say 48-year-old Michael Peitzmeier, a former counter worker at a Fremont post office, is charged in a two count indictment handed down Thursday.

The indictment says from 2011 through June of this year, Peitzmeier converted more than $1,000 that into his hands as a postal employee to his own use. It also says Peitzmeier made a false report of such monies.

If convicted of both counts, Peitzmeier faces up to 20 years in prison.

A public phone listing for Peitzmeier could not be found. It is not clear whether he has an attorney.
