An Iowa man has been sentenced to 50 to 70 years in prison for sexually assaulting two boys between 2004 and 2012.

Robert Schuster, who turns 33 on Tuesday, pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual assault. He was sentenced Monday.

Authorities found seven other potential victims in addition to the boys Schuster is convicted of abusing.

Additionally Schuster has been sentenced to 10-to-30 years in prison in Iowa for assaulting two boys during overnight trips to his apartment in Council Bluffs. He’ll serve that sentence at the same time as the Nebraska one.

Lancaster County District Judge John Colborn says the long sentences reflect the seriousness of Schuster’s crimes and the need to protect the public.

(AP) — An eastern Nebraska woman arrested over the weekend has been accused of slipping out of her handcuffs and taking off in a deputy’s cruiser.

Authorities in Saunders County say 23-year-old Jessica Lewin, of Ashland, was arrested Sunday night following a disturbance report.

Lewin is accused of slipping out of her handcuffs as a deputy gathered information from witnesses. Levin also is accused of getting into the patrol car and driving away.

Authorities say Lewin later jumped out of the car following a short pursuit and was found inside a van at a nearby farmstead.

Lewin faces several charges, including theft, possession of a controlled substance and driving under suspension. Court records do not list an attorney.

NTSB Urges Changes After Five Near Collisions Between Airliners

NTSB(AP) — Federal accident investigators are urging the adoption of new air traffic control procedures for handling aborted landings after five near collisions involving airliners.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a letter Monday to the Federal Aviation Administration that current procedures should be modified so that in cases where two planes are departing at once, controllers shouldn’t also clear a plane to land at a time it would create the potential for a collision if the flight crew of the landing plane decides to abort the landing and go around for another attempt.

NTSB said there were four such near collisions last year: two in Las Vegas, and one each in New York and Charlotte, N.C. There was also a similar near collision in Las Vegas in 2006.

400 Firefighters Now Battling Arizona Blaze That Killed 19

fire-graphic(AP) — Four hundred firefighters are now battling the Arizona wildfire that killed 19 firefighters.

Yavapai Community Health Services says 200 more firefighters have joined the fight. Hundreds of people are evacuated, and shelters are set up for residents.

An automated call warning people to evacuate was sent, and sheriff’s officers are going door-to-door to make sure people get out of their homes.

The lightning-sparked fire — which had exploded to about 13 square miles by Monday morning — destroyed about 50 homes and threatened 250 others in and around Yarnell, a town of 700 people in the mountains about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix.

Fremont Teen Charged with Racing Before Fatal Crash

fatal-accident(AP) — A Fremont teenager has been accused of drag racing with other teenagers before a fatal crash in June.

Court records show 16-year-old Quinton Amundson has been charged with willful reckless driving, racing on the highway and driving left of the center line.  Amundson has been charged as an adult.

Three 16-year-old students were killed and another seriously hurt in the June 3 crash southeast of Fremont.

Dodge County Attorney Oliver Glass says Amundson was driving a Camaro and racing a Ford Mustang driven by one of the victims. The Mustang lost control and crashed.

Amundson is scheduled for a July 23 arraignment in Dodge County Court. Records do not list an attorney.

Firefighters Stop Fire at Lincoln Catholic School

lincoln-fire-department(AP) — Firefighters have extinguished a basement fire at a Catholic school in Lincoln.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire Monday afternoon at Cathedral of the Risen Christ School. It was contained a half hour later.

Officials say the fire started in the boiler room as construction workers replaced the school’s heating and air conditioning system. Sparks from a demolition saw ignited a stack of floor buffing pads.

No students were at the school during the fire, which created smoke throughout the building and caused water damage. No injuries were reported.

(AP) — A Colorado woman says whoever killed her 13-year-old son was a monster for leaving his remains where wildlife could get to them.

Elaine Redwine says that Dylan Redwine’s bones were spread out when they were found last week in the southwestern Colorado mountains.

She says “he deserved so much more.”

Dylan lived in the Monument area with his mother but arrived in La Plata County on Nov. 18 for a court-ordered visit in Vallecito (vy-uh-SEE’-toh) with his father, Mark Redwine.

The father says he returned home from running errands Nov. 19 to find Dylan was gone.

Elaine Redwine says she’s grateful she asked her son for a hug before he left for that visit. But she never thought he wouldn’t come back home.

Nebraska Man Pleads Guilty to Helping Rob Iowa Bank

ne-supreme-court-gavel(AP) — A Nebraska man is facing up to 10 years in federal prison for helping another man rob a bank in Fort Dodge earlier this year.

U.S. Attorney Sean Berry says 26-year-old Christopher Anderson pleaded guilty to being an accessory to bank robbery.

Prosecutors say Anderson drove another man to a location near the bank in Fort Dodge on Feb. 7. When that man returned to Anderson’s car, he was holding a bag and urged Anderson to drive fast.

Anderson drove the other man to Omaha, Neb., to help him elude authorities. Anderson was given $1,000 for his help.

Anderson, of Omaha, could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He could also face a fine up to $125,000.

Only Lawyers Can Now Argue Before Supreme Court

supreme-court(AP) — You must be a lawyer to argue before the Supreme Court.

Thought that already was the case? It wasn’t until Monday, when the Supreme Court revised its 80-page rule book for the first time since 2010.

The update covers items such as filing deadlines, but also adds Rule 28.8, which requires anyone arguing before the court to be a lawyer. The high court says the new rule simply codifies a “long-standing practice of the court.”

A nonlawyer hasn’t argued before the justices in more than three decades, though not for a lack of trying.

A magazine publisher, entrepreneur and paralegal-in-training asked but were turned down, the latest in the past year. Now, if anyone asks, the court will be able to point to the new rule.

19 Firefighters Die Battling Arizona Wildfire

fire-graphic

(AP) — An Arizona forestry official says 19 firefighters have died battling a fast-moving wildfire.

Forestry spokesman Art Morrison says the firefighters were caught by the fire Sunday afternoon near the central Arizona town of Yarnell. He says they were forced to deploy their fire shelters.

Earlier Sunday, the wildfire prompted evacuations of 50 homes in several communities about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. Later Sunday afternoon, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office expanded the evacuations to include more residents in the town of Yarnell.

Morrison says several homes in the community of Glenisle have been burned. He says no injuries or deaths have been reported from that area.

About 200 firefighters are fighting the wildfire, which has also forced the closure of parts of state Route 89.
