North Central Nebraskan farmers hit with a 1-2 punch. Donations being accepted

AINSWORTH, Neb. (AP) — Donations are being accepted to help north-central Nebraska livestock producers who’ve been hit by a one-two punch of drought and wildfires in the area this summer.

Wildfires have burned hundreds of miles of fencing and consumed tens of thousands of acres of what grass was left for cattle and calves to graze on.

The North Central Development Center in Ainsworth has set up a fund to take financial donations to help with the cost of the fire. Donations of wire and post may be delivered to the Farmers and Ranchers Co-op in Ainsworth.

For more information, contact the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Office in Ainsworth at 1-800-634-8951. The development center can be contacted at 402-387-2740.

Supreme Court rejects two appeals by sex offenders over the new law for sex offenders

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has rejected appeals by two sex offenders who say changes by the Legislature to the Sex Offender Registration Act in 2009 violate their constitutional rights.

The law was challenged by Timothy Gaskill, convicted in 1995, and Jason Harris, convicted in 2001.

The law requires sex offenders to register current addresses and requires their names to be published on a website.

It was passed after both were convicted but Gaskill was on probation which makes him subject to it. Harris must register as a sex offender until 2013.

Both say the law imposes retroactive and additional punishment.

The court rejected the arguments saying the law punishes those who fail to register and posting the names is not additional punishment.

Man who drove his SUV into home, pushing sleeping woman, is in jail

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man police say crashed his SUV through a woman’s bedroom, knocking her and her bed into the back yard, is in jail.

21-year-old Paul Mosher refused to take a breath test. He is charged by Omaha police with suspicion of driving under the influence and collision with a fixed object.

Investigators say Mosher was driving fast at 3:15 a.m. Friday when his sport-utility vehicle hit six cars parked on a street, struck a curb, and went airborne into the bedroom of a home.

A woman and the mattress she was sleeping on were pushed into the back yard. The woman is being treated for broken bones but her father says she will recover.

The case is not yet listed in online court records.

North Central Fire containment average of 70 percent over three blazes , containment expected Sunday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Despite a fire line break, a Nebraska official says firefighters are still on track to completely contain three wildfires that have blackened more than 117 square miles of north-central Nebraska.

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokesman Mike Wight said Friday the total area burned expanded by nearly four acres late Thursday and overnight because flames surmounted a fire line on the southern edge of the Wentworth fire.

Wight says containment averages 70 percent over the three blazes, with 97 percent containment of the biggest, the Fairfield Creek fire. He says complete containment is still expected by Sunday.

He had no reports of any new injuries or structures being burned.

Supreme Court case puts man in prison for 60 years

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has affirmed the conviction and sentence of an Omaha man serving up to 60 years in prison for a fatal parking lot shooting.

Rufus Freemont was convicted last year of second-degree murder and weapons counts for the June 2010 shooting death of 19-year-old Andrew Galligo.

Freemont argued that a Douglas County District Court erred by, among other things, allowing evidence at his trial that he had a gun in the week before the shooting and that he jumped out of a second-story window to escape police trying to arrest him.

A Nebraska Supreme Court opinion issued Friday said the lower court did err by allowing testimony on Freemont’s gun possession, but that the error was harmless.

Woman wakes up in her back yard with broken bones

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha woman has been taken to a hospital after a vehicle crashed through her bedroom.

The sport utility vehicle ran completely through the house early Friday morning. The 31-year-old woman, who had been asleep in her bedroom, ended up with broken bones in the backyard. She was taken to Creighton University Medical Center.

Police say the 21-year-old SUV driver was heading home from a bar and speeding down a street when he lost control of the SUV. It hit six parked cars and then a curb before going airborne into the house. Police say he faces several charges.

The names of those involved have not been released.

Animal hoarder who dumped 23 dead or dying dogs, banned from living with animals, gets discovered..living with animals

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A 49-year-old Iowa woman has been given nine years of probation in Nebraska because she violated terms of an earlier probation sentence by living with dogs.

Denise Withee, of Mapleton, Iowa, was sentenced on Thursday. Her new sentence also includes a provision that bars her from owning or living with any animals.

Withee had been on probation for dumping 23 dead or dying dogs in a Nebraska cornfield in 2008. She has admitted that she violated probation by living with 13 dogs at the Iowa home she shares with her mother. Iowa authorities discovered the dogs in January.

Withee’s attorney, Vicki Kenney, says Withee fits the description of an animal hoarder and described her as “an addict of animals.”

Chris Beutler calling on residents to please save water!

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln’s mayor is again calling on residents to voluntarily conserve water for the rest of the summer.

Mayor Chris Beutler said Thursday that the city needs to reduce water consumption by about 20 percent. Earlier this week, Lincoln used 80 million gallons of water on Tuesday and 76 million gallons on Wednesday.

Beutler says he is trying to avoid issuing mandatory water restrictions. So he hopes residents will adhere to outdoor water use limits.

The city wants residents with street addresses ending in even numbers to limit outdoor water use — including watering lawns and washing vehicles — to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Those with addresses ending in odd numbers are asked to limit their outdoor water use to Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Man goes to prison for producing over 9,000 videos of child pornography

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for producing child pornography.

Federal prosecutors say 50-year-old Douglas Suing was sentenced in federal court in Omaha.

After he leaves prison he will be on supervised release for life and must register as a sex offender.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg (gihlj) says Suing was arrested in Navajo County, Ariz., on Jan. 12, 2011, as he was driving back to Nebraska. The search of a hard drive found in his vehicle revealed more than 9,000 videos of child pornography, some including a 12-year-old child living in Omaha.
