Nebraska mother married at 14, now 21 seeking to regain custody of children.

FALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska mom whose marriage at age 14 generated headlines is trying along with her husband to regain custody of their children.

The 21-year-old Crystal Koso and 29-year-old Matthew Koso were in court last week.

The couple’s three children and one child fathered by another man while Koso was in prison for impregnating Crystal Koso at age 13 have been in state custody since 2010.

The couple drew national attention in 2005 after Crystal Koso became pregnant and they married in Hiawatha, Kan. with her mother’s permission. At the time, such a marriage was allowed with parental consent. The case led Kansas lawmakers to set a minimum marriage age of 15.

Nebraska allows people as young as 17 to marry with parental consent.

Nebraska Public Power District still urging residential and retailers to conserve electricity

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Public Power District is asking everyone in the state to try to conserve electricity during the extreme heat forecast for the next several days.

NPPD CEO Pat Pope says the utility is concerned about the added stress on the electrical transmission system, especially in the north-central region.

If residential and business users can reduce their power use during peak times of the morning and evening, Pope says that will help.

If NPPD believes the system will be overloaded by demand, it can interrupt power service for some users. Pope says NPPD used that program last week to reduce the amount of electricity needed.

NPPD provides power to about 1 million retail and wholesale customers in the state.

New Photography exhibit shows the humanity behind political conflicts in Iran

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A new photography exhibit at Chadron State College in Nebraska is offering seldom-seen perspectives on life in Iran.

Administrators at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center say the new exhibit will remain on display through Oct. 28. It features 30 works of photography and video by 20 of Iran’s most celebrated photographers.

Sarah Polak, the center’s director, says the exhibit was created to show the humanity behind the political conflicts in the country. She says the images aren’t graphic or explicit, but are different from the displays that the center’s visitors traditionally see.

The Sandoz Center is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day.

A major blaze in North-Central Nebraska burns 20,000 acres,around 7 miles wide

NORDEN, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters are battling a blaze in north-central Nebraska that has burned at least 20,000 acres and damaged homes.

The fire was raging Saturday in parts of northern Brown County and southern and central Keya Paha County. Regional emergency manager Doug Fox says the fire’s leading edge was 6 to 7 miles wide as it moved through Keya Paha County.

Numerous homes and structures were damaged around the tiny community of Norden, although Fox says the exact number won’t be known until authorities survey the area.

A large air tanker from Rapid City, S.D. was dispatched to the area Saturday, as was a water-carrying helicopter from Lincoln.

No injuries were reported, but Fox says some firefighters were treated for symptoms of heat stress.

Saline County is a friendly place for livestock! Named “Livestock Friendly”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman has named Saline County in southeast Nebraska as the state’s newest “Livestock Friendly” area.

The governor’s office says the southeast Nebraska county will become the 17th statewide to receive the title. The program is coordinated by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

Counties chosen as “Livestock Friendly” are given road signs showing the program logo to display along highways, and can use the label to market themselves to the agriculture industry.

To apply for a livestock-friendly designation, a county’s board must hold a public hearing and pass a resolution. County officials must then complete an application and submit it to the state Department of Agriculture. Local producers or community groups can encourage their county board to submit a livestock-friendly county application.

Neb Supreme Court Reduces Award for Girls Involved in Sledding Accident

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld a ruling against the city of Omaha for a sledding accident that seriously injured two girls, but reduced the overall award their family will receive.

Justices ruled Friday that the city was mostly to blame for the December 2000 crash at an Omaha park.

Rachel Connelly was 5 and her sister, Chelsea, was 10 when they struck a crabapple tree planted by city workers. Chelsea suffered a punctured lung and broken rib. Rachel was paralyzed.

A Douglas County judge ordered the city to pay Rachel $1 million, and awarded her parents a combined $1.5 million. The high court ruled that the parents’ award should have been treated as one joint claim instead of two. State law sets a $1 million cap for damage claims.

Nebraska Lt. Gov Rick Sheehy about to be single…Are you ready to mingle?

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — The wife of Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy  has filed for divorce after nearly 19 years of marriage.

The papers were filed Wednesday in Adams County District Court in Hastings, where Sheehy served as mayor before being selected by Gov. Dave Heineman for the state post. They won re-election in 2010.

Connie Sheehy’s filing says the “marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken.”

They were wed Sept. 2, 1983 in Lexington and have two grown children.

Last summer Sheehy announce his intention to run in the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2014 so he can replace Heineman, who has endorsed him.

A spokeswoman for Rick Sheehy didn’t immediately return messages from The Associated Press.
