Authorities say 31-year-old Oscar Herrera-Menjivar was being transported from Florida to Nebraska when he escaped from a prisoner transport bus early Saturday. It had stopped at a fuel station off Interstate 90.

Some area residents like Craig McManus think the escaped prisoner is long gone. But others like farmer Calvin Heitzman says that corn fields in the area make a good hiding place, especially since they’ll provide food if the corn is mature.

Authorities say Herrera-Menjivar should be considered dangerous and travelers in the area should not pick up hitchhikers. He was originally charged with sexual assault of a minor.

A stinky issue farmers are facing…

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska farmers are being warned about the relatively high numbers of stink bugs in fields of corn and soybeans.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln entomologist Bob Wright says the plants are sensitive to stink bug injury during their reproductive stages, so farmers should be watching for the bugs.

Stink bugs feed on plants and other insects by piercing and injecting the plant or insect with digestive enzymes, then removing fluids from the plant or insect.

More information about scouting for stink bugs, including treatment information, is available online at cropwatch.unl.edu.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg  announced in a news release that 45-year-old Tony Harlan Wilson of Lincoln was sentenced Friday.

Lincoln police arrested Wilson after they found him with 4.5 grams of methamphetamine in November 2010. An informant told authorities that Wilson was responsible for distributing between 3 and 11 pounds of methamphetamine between 2008 and 2010.

Wilson must also serve five years of supervised release once his prison term ends, and forfeit $69 in cash to federal authorities.

The case was handled by the Lincoln Police Department, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department.

Dozens of family members, friends and political allies gathered at a Lincoln church to memorialize Tiemann’s life. Tiemann died last month in his Dallas home, after battling heart problems. He was 87.

Friends recalled how the one-term governor once got in trouble with constituents when he quipped that he had never met a happy farmer.

They also recalled his policy achievements during his one term in office, from 1967 to 1971. Nebraska approved a minimum wage during his tenure, state aid for schools, and collective bargaining for public employees. The University of Nebraska at Omaha was also created under his watch.

Lincoln officials break out of shell, want a more visually attractive city

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials in Lincoln say they want to develop Nebraska’s capital city into a hub for sculptures, statues and other public art.

A team of art enthusiasts, city officials and funders is devising a master plan to help the city accomplish that goal.

The group has targeted the Interstate 180 corridor, Antelope Valley and the downtown as potential locations for the art. Members are looking to acquire a collection of national prominence.

The group, which is part of the Lincoln Community Foundation, has already bought a 20-foot tall, $100,000 statue by Albert Paley with private money. It will go in an undetermined spot in 2014.

The amnesty event was hosted by the police department’s bomb and firearms squads, with help from the Omaha and Ralston fire departments.

The event took place at an Omaha-area park and a Christian worship center. Police say they counted 250 vehicles with residents that came to turn in weapons or fireworks.

Ron Paul efforts to gain control proved futile

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — An effort by Ron Paul supporters to gain control of Nebraska’s delegation to the Republican national convention has been squashed.

Paul claimed only two pledged delegates from Nebraska’s 35-member contingent Saturday at the party’s state convention.

The outcome of delegate selection balloting at the represents a big victory for Gov. Dave Heineman, who worked actively behind the scenes to personally contact Nebraska Republicans who made the delegate selections.

Heineman was the first governor to endorse Mitt Romney at the advent of the GOP presidential primary and caucus process, and his ability to deliver Romney delegates from his home state — as well as his leadership of the state party — were on the line.

Young child runs into street, run over by vehicle

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says a 2-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a car while running across a street.

Authorities say the crash happened shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, 18-year-old Dusty Consbruck was driving east in Hastings, and did not see the toddler run across the street.

The state patrol says Consbruck’s 2001 Buick LeSabre hit the child, and dragged the boy a short distance. Emergency crews took the boy to Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say they have notified the toddler’s family, but the state patrol has not yet identified the boy. Officials say no charges have been filed.
