LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman is accused of fleeing the scene after her aunt fell from a sport utility vehicle the woman was driving.

Court records say Kacie Alatoree is charged with failing to stop and render aid and remained in custody Friday. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

A Lincoln officer says in a court affidavit that Alatoree had borrowed the SUV from the boyfriend of her aunt, 36-year-old Autumn Rodriguez Hernandez but had refused to return it. Rodriguez Hernandez spotted the vehicle and Alatoree on Tuesday and climbed on it after Alatoree refused to surrender the keys. The officer says Rodriguez Hernandez fell off and struck her head after Alatoree accelerated and swerved.

A hospital spokeswoman says Rodriguez Hernandez remained in critical condition Friday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal inspectors have repeatedly ordered a southeast Iowa fur farm to improve the living conditions for ferrets, foxes, raccoons and skunks it sells to government laboratories and pet stores.

U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection reports say animals lived in sweltering heat or maggot-infested filth, sometimes with decomposing corpses in their cages at Ruby Fur Farm, located 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Des Moines.

Owner Randy Ruby declined to discuss the reports. But a spokeswoman at an animal business advocacy group says some of the inspectors’ claims were exaggerated and when there were problems Ruby addressed them.

No enforcement action has been taken, but animal rights groups want the farm’s animal dealer license revoked and animals removed.

A USDA spokesman has declined to say whether enforcement action is under consideration.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of Omaha has received a $200,000 private donation to create a new replica of a monument honoring Korean and Vietnam War veterans.

The Korea Vietnam Peace Memorial was installed in 1976 and was restored 20 years ago. The monument featuring a soldier and child has already been removed from Memorial Park.

The city announced the donation Wednesday during the Veterans Shine On lighting ceremony at the park.

Jensen Conservation Service is building the identical replica. Advocates are hoping the work gets done in time for the 70th anniversary of the park’s dedication next year.

Mayor Jean Stothert says the memorial is a “symbol of military service and sacrifice.”

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute a powerful painkiller that led to the 2015 death of a Council Bluffs man.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Charles Jesse Beuterbaugh, of Carter Lake, was sentenced Tuesday in Council Bluffs’ federal court.

Prosecutors say Beuterbaugh was part of a drug-trafficking organization that sold fentanyl in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

The investigation into the group began in June 2015, when police were called to Beuterbaugh’s Carter Lake home and found the body of 20-year-old Diego Lemus. Police learned a second man had been taken to a local hospital for a fentanyl overdose.

Three of Beuterbaugh’s co-defendants were earlier sentenced to terms ranging from 10 to nearly 14 years. Two others await sentencing.

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — An eastern Nebraska commercial bakery has been cited by a federal workplace safety agency, accused of exposing workers to multiple hazards.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a news release Wednesday that Bimbo Bakeries USA, of Bellevue, faces $122,625 in proposed penalties.

Investigators cited the bakery for three repeat and three serious violations, including lack of machine guarding, failing to provide fall protection, and using a damaged electrical panel box.

OSHA says it has cited the company twice before for similar hazards.

A message left Wednesday for Bimbo’s plant manager seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The company has 15 business days to comply, request an informal conference or contest the findings.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters called to a house fire in south-central Omaha found more than two dozen of animals — including seven turkeys.

Firefighters were called to the house at Orchard Avenue and 54th Street around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters say no people were inside at the time, but crews found 15 chickens, three dogs, a cat and the turkeys. Firefighters say four chickens died in the fire.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire shortly after arriving.

Officials say the homeowner had a permit for all the animals.

The Nebraska Humane Society says the surviving animals were removed from the home for safekeeping.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Lincoln police officer who left the force last month amid a sex assault investigation has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

The Nebraska State Patrol says in a news release Wednesday that investigators arrested 54-year-old Gregory Cody.

The patrol says the arrest came after someone reported an assault to a health care professional at a Lincoln hospital. The hospital then reported the assault to the State Patrol on Oct. 17.

Cody had not been formally charged by late Wednesday afternoon, and he could not be reached for comment.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Lincoln attorney John Ball is representing Cody. Ball did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

A Lincoln police spokeswoman said she could not comment before the department’s statement was issued later Wednesday.

SCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) — A Schuyler man has been imprisoned for the death of a 15-year-old girl who was a passenger in his car.

23-year-old Angel Lopez was sentenced Wednesday to 12 to 20 years in prison. He’d pleaded no contest to manslaughter after prosecutors dropped four other charges, including drunken driving.

Authorities say Lopez’s car slammed into a tree in Schuyler around 11 p.m. on June 15, 2016. A passenger, Isabella Brandt, was killed in the crash. A 15-year-old boy in the car was injured.

Authorities say the car crashed while fleeing from a Schuyler police officer.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A Hastings police officer accused of kicking and shoving his wife and slapping his mother while off-duty has been charged with assault.

Court records say 26-year-old Cody Bland was charged Tuesday with domestic assault, assault and a related charge. A public phone listing for him couldn’t be found. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for him. Bland’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday in Adams County Court.

The records say Bland’s wife told officers that Bland kicked, shoved and tackled her at their home Oct. 30. She managed to call some of her husband’s relatives for help. His mother says he slapped and kicked her after she arrived.

Bland has been on the Hastings force for four years. He’s been suspended with pay.
