Man dies after motorcycle crashes in Platte County

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 31-year-old man has died after the crash of his motorcycle in eastern Nebraska’s Platte County.

The accident occurred Sunday, a little more than 5 miles (9 kilometers) northwest of Columbus on U.S. Highway 81.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says the man lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown off. The Sheriff’s Office suspects the man had been drinking.

He was taken to a Columbus hospital and then flown to a Lincoln hospital. The Sheriff’s Office says he died Monday.

He was identified as William Nickels, who lived in Bellwood.

Heartland B-cycle expands bike sharing into Sarpy County

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Heartland B-cycle has expanded its bike sharing into Sarpy County.

B-cycle stations have been installed in downtown Papillion (puh-PIHL’-yuhn) and at the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District headquarters.

The kiosks and bicycles are owned by the city of Papillion and the resources district. Papillion paid $27,000 for six bikes and a nine-stall kiosk. The district paid $33,000 for eight bikes and an 11-stall kiosk. Heartland B-cycle takes care of maintenance.

B-cycle lets people rent bikes and ride them for as long as they like. The bikes can be returned to any B-cycle kiosk.

Papillion spokesman Trenton Albers said B-cycle is “another way of encouraging our residents to be active.”

Most of the system stations are in downtown Omaha, which is in adjacent Douglas County.

Officials release name of man whose body was found in river

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha authorities have released the name of a man whose body was found floating down the Missouri River.

Boaters spotted the body around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. An Omaha Fire Department river rescue team recovered it near Eppley Airfield on the northeast corner of the city.

Omaha police said Wednesday that the man’s been identified as 32-year-old Tyler Owen.

Police say no foul play is suspected in Owen’s death, but their investigation is continuing. It’s unclear whether an accident was involved.

Omaha zoo expecting arrival of African elephant from Ohio

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has announced its plan to accept an African elephant from the Toledo Zoo in Ohio.

The bull African elephant, named Louie, is expected to be transferred to Omaha’s zoo within a month. It’s hoped the 14-year-old elephant will breed with one of the Omaha zoo’s five female African elephants to help sustain the genetic diversity of the endangered species’ population in zoos.

In his new home, Louie will join a herd of six other African elephants in the multi-species African Grasslands exhibit, which includes zebras, impalas and a 150,000 gallon pool. The zoo also boasts the largest indoor elephant herd space in North America at 29,000 square feet. Combined, the indoor and outdoor elephant areas total more than five acres.

Nebraska authorities take custody of suspect from Denver

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities have taken custody of an Omaha homicide suspect from Colorado.

Authorities say 31-year-old Antoine C. Johnson was booked Tuesday at Douglas County Corrections on second-degree murder and weapons charges. Johnson was taken into custody in Denver last month and extradited back to Omaha.

Johnson is suspected of shooting 29-year-old Trent Stutheit on April 16 in an apartment complex parking lot. Stutheit was taken to an Omaha hospital, where he later died.

Diversity reflected in new Boys Town statue

BOYS TOWN, Neb. (AP) — Boys Town has a new statue that shows hardship isn’t exclusive to one race or gender.

The Omaha home for troubled boys and girls unveiled the 7-foot-tall statue Tuesday. The work by sculptor Matthew Placzek depicts an older boy carrying a smaller girl on his back. She is white, he is black. Its title: “The Work Continues.”

Boys Town was founded by Father Edward Flanagan in 1917 as a boys orphanage. It has grown into a nonprofit organization with about a dozen facilities around the U.S.

The iconic “Two Brothers” statue is displayed elsewhere at Boys Town. The Rev. Steven Boes (bayz) is Boys Town’s executive director, and he says the new statue “beautifully illustrates the diversity of the children and families that Boys Town serves.”

Nebraska man’s trial in Iowa death of wife set to begin

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the trial of a Nebraska man accused of killing his estranged wife in northwestern Iowa.

Court records say 29-year-old Rogelio Morales, of Hubbard, Nebraska, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he killed 21-year-old Margarita Morales on April 19, 2015, in his car near a Sioux City residence. The case has been delayed several times as defense attorneys have repeatedly withdrawn from representing Morales.

Court documents say Morales told investigators a fight broke out when his wife told him she no longer wanted to be in a relationship and that she was seeing another man.

Man gets probation in eastern Nebraska crash death

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old man has been sentenced for the crash death of a 20-year-old woman in eastern Nebraska.

Colin Larsen was given two years of probation. He was sentenced Monday in Sarpy County District Court in Papillion. Court records say he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular homicide and to careless driving. Prosecutors dropped several other charges in exchange for Larsen’s pleas.

The records say Larsen lost control of his pickup truck on Dec. 20, 2015, while driving along U.S. Highway 31 in Springfield. It rolled and landed on its roof, fatally injuring Larsen’s passenger, Tiffany Hofmeister. She lived in Lincoln.

Nebraska school district helps refugee students with trauma

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska school district has a new program to help refugee students deal with the trauma that made them flee their home countries.

Lincoln Public Schools officials stepped in after the 2014 massacre by the Islamic State group in Sinjar, Iraq, devastated members of Lincoln’s Yazidi community.

Oscar Rios Pohirieth is a cultural specialist and coordinator for the district’s bilingual liaison program. He says immigrant and refugee students in Lincoln increased by more than 50 percent over the past three years.

Last school year, therapists served nearly 50 refugees from 14 different schools through the program. Another 24 students are on a waiting list.

The district has interpreters work with therapists to get past language and cultural barriers, including any stigma about mental health.

Omaha police say South Dakota man dies after stun gun shock

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say a man died while in custody and after being shocked by a stun gun.

Police say officers were called about 12:30 a.m. Monday to a Bucky’s convenience store, where a man was refusing to leave.

Officers arrested 29-year-old Zachary N. Bearheels, of Murdo, South Dakota.

Police say Bearheels began acting erratically, and officers used a stun gun.

Officers called for medics about 1:30 a.m., and Bearheels was then taken to Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

As required by state law, a grand jury will be convened to investigate the officers’ actions.
