Omaha teachers to get training in ‘cultural proficiency’

schoolOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The labor union representing public school teachers in Nebraska has created a new strategic plan to advance “a culture of social justice.”

Delegates from local teachers unions approved the plan last month during the Nebraska State Education Association’s annual assembly in Lincoln.

The plan calls for more diversity in teacher recruitment, training teachers in “cultural proficiency” and promoting a legislative agenda that “advances human and civil rights.”

Jenni Benson, the union’s new state president, says the union looks at social justice as providing free and equitable public education across the state.

Other goals included in the union’s plan are protecting collective bargaining rights and “being active in the election of pro-public education candidates.”

The union reports it has about 28,000 members.

Ex-golf treasurer accuse of theft gets pretrial diversion

gavel-and-scaleSEWARD, Neb. (AP) — A former treasurer of an eastern Nebraska golf course treasurer accused of embezzling more than $141,000 it has been placed in a diversion program.

31-year-old Chaise Vegas, of Milford, is participating in pretrial diversion, which would see the theft charges against him dropped if he successfully completes it.

An arrest affidavit says Vegas made unauthorized withdrawals totaling nearly $142,000 from two accounts for Thornridge Golf Course in Milford. Vegas took over as treasurer in April 2015. The affidavit says all but around $3,500 had been repaid by the time he was arrested.

Vegas resigned in December, and the club said it has since been repaid for all unauthorized withdrawals.

Omaha zoo adding Asian Highlands exhibit to grounds

henry-doorly-zooOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in Omaha has begun work on an Asian forest exhibit designed to create a habitat for tigers, leopards and other species, including red pandas.

The $20 million, eight-acre Asian Highlands is under construction in an empty northeast corner of the zoo.

The tropical and deciduous forest habitat is being built on a hillside that last hosted the “Dinosaurs Alive” exhibit in 2013. It’s hoped half the exhibit will open by summer 2018 and the rest will open the following summer.

Amur tigers, snow leopards and Indian rhinos already living at the zoo will get upgraded homes. In addition to the red pandas, newcomers will include sloth bears, white-naped cranes, and two kinds of deer and goat-antelopes.
