Ex-Nebraska school superintendent pleads guilty to theft

gavel-and-scaleLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska school superintendent has pleaded guilty to stealing $314,000 from a federal program.

Former Santee Community Schools superintendent Paul Sellon entered his plea on Tuesday. He was accused of stealing the funds between 2010 and 2013, while he worked for the Santee-based school district on the Santee Sioux Reservation.

According to a plea agreement, Sellon contracted with Mastery Learning and Achievement, paying $683,000 in funds from an annual school improvement grant. As a pre-condition to being hired in Santee, authorities say Sellon told the company it needed to pay him some of the grant money it received for its service.

Company officials told investigators they believed the company wouldn’t get the contract unless they paid Sellon as he directed.

Sellon’s sentencing is scheduled for February.

Big victories for legal pot, but path ahead is uncertain

marijuana-jointLOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of Americans living in states with recreational marijuana more than tripled after at least three more states voted to fully legalize the drug.

But the election of Republican Donald Trump and GOP majorities in the Senate and House tempered advocates’ excitement about an anticipated federal easing of restrictions.

Ethan Nadelmann is founder of the nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance, a pro-legalization group. He and other advocates say the president-elect is “unpredictable.” And they are unsure where he stands on marijuana issues.

Trump has said in the past that he supports state laws legalizing medical marijuana.

Still, the industry may be too big and valuable for a Trump administration to stop. Seven states have now legalized recreational pot, including California, the nation’s most populous, and Nevada and Massachusetts.

Ashford says serving in Congress represented a dream come true because he had the opportunity to teach Washington about Nebraska values.
