October trial set in Nebraska collision that killed 2 people

gavel-and-scaleNORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — An October trial has been scheduled for a Norfolk man charged with several crimes in a collision that killed two people.

Online court records say 23-year-old Brandon Plante entered pleas of not guilty to several charges Friday in Madison County District Court. They include two counts of vehicular homicide while driving with a previous conviction for driving under the influence and one count of driving under the influence, second offense.

His trial is set to begin Oct. 11.

Nebraska authorities accuse Californian of online scam

scam-graphicLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities have accused a California man of scamming several would-be buyers out of thousands of dollars for what he said he had: a powerful, hard-to-find car engine.

Lancaster County prosecutors last week charged 59-year-old Steven Shaull with theft. Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles investigator Marlan Hohnstein says Shaull was arrested Friday in California. Nebraska online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Shaull, of Anaheim.

Authorities say a Lincoln company, Restore a Muscle Car, reported wiring $11,500 to Shaull in December for the 426-cubic-inch engine to put in a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. The company says it never received the engine.

Hohnstein says in court records that he found other people who also were duped.

Omaha woman launches campaign to support police officers

omaha-police-cruiserOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha woman whose husband is a police officer has started a letter-writing campaign to support members of law enforcement and their families.

McCallister is encouraging residents to write letters during September and send them to Embrace Blue, a group formed under the Fraternal Order of Police Association. Embrace Blue will send the well-wishes across the Omaha Police Department.

People are also able to donate small items that officers will give to children while on patrol in an effort to promote the department’s mission of community policing.

More information about the program will be announced at a press conference Wednesday night.

The Cupertino, California company sold more than 214 million iPhones over the last 12 months. But sales are down from a year ago, and analysts will be watching closely to see what changes Apple has made in the newest models.

Visitor misbehavior abounds as US parks agency turns 100

national-park-serviceYELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Record visitor numbers at the nation’s first national park have transformed Yellowstone National Park’s annual tourist rush into a sometimes dangerous frenzy.

Photo-snapping visitors routinely break the rules, getting too close to elk, grizzly bears, wolves and bison.

Officials say the rule-breaking puts visitors in harm’s way, damages resources and displaces wildlife.

Law enforcement records obtained by The Associated Press suggest such problems are on the rise.

Yellowstone rangers are seeing more wildlife violations, more people treading on sensitive thermal areas and more illegal camping.

It’s an illustration of the pressures facing America’s most treasured lands as the National Park Service marks its 100th anniversary. From the Great Smoky Mountains to the Grand Canyon, major parks are grappling with vandalism, theft of resources and other misbehavior.

Fire blocking Yellowstone National Park entrance smolders on

yellowstone-national-parkGRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Firefighters working on steep hillsides are chopping down trees and searching for hotspots as they battle a wildfire that’s blocking an entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

Wildfire managers say their top priority is clearing a highway in the area and protecting campgrounds, buildings and archaeological sites. They’re also making sure there are no flare-ups or falling trees that could cause injuries or death.

Strong winds blew down several trees Saturday, blocking some roads. Travelers have been warned to be cautious on area roads that are still open around the park.

The fire that began last month is blocking Yellowstone’s south entrance near Jackson, Wyoming. The park also has entrance stations in Montana and near Cody, Wyoming.

Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks and Bridger Teton National Forest all have area closures in effect, but both national parks are open to visitors.
