Toking up while working out: Pair plan gym allowing pot use

marijuana-jointNOVATO, Calif. (AP) — A former pro football star and an advocate for athlete marijuana use have teamed up to open a gym in San Francisco that they say will be one of the first in the world to allow members to smoke pot while working out.

Former running back Ricky Williams and Jim McAlpine, a snowboard company executive, said Power Plant Fitness will open before the end of the year. It also will offer edibles and topical gels for those who don’t like smoking the plant.

Members will need a medical marijuana prescription to join, but that could change if California voters legalize recreational pot in November.

Carla Lowe, founder of Citizens Against Legalizing Marijuana, said it’s not clear how pot affects the body but there’s “zero evidence” it helps a person focus.

3 charged in roulette cheating conspiracy at Iowa casino

roulette-wheelCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa casino supervisor, dealer and patron are charged with conspiring to cheat at roulette and split thousands of dollars in illicit winnings.

A criminal complaint alleges the trio carried out the scheme on several occasions in February and March at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs. In all, they allegedly split between $20,000 and $30,000 in earnings.

The conspiracy involved moving and adding additional chips to winning numbers, accepting late bets and placing additional wagers for guests.

But it unraveled after a player noticed the cheating and complained to casino management, which alerted the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

The DCI said that roulette supervisor Jonathan Rumery, dealer Jonathan Waugh and player Cody Schroeder have been arrested. All three face felony charges.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A western Iowa bridge over Interstate 80 may soon be renamed to honor a slain Omaha police officer who grew up nearby in Walnut, Iowa.

The Walnut City Council must approve the move before signs can be installed.

Orozco was fatally wounded on May 20, 2015, when Marcus Wheeler opened fire on officers who were trying to arrest him. Wheeler was killed when another officer returned fire. Contractor blames Omaha utility in downtown natural gas fire

explosionOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Minnesota excavation company that city authorities blame for causing a downtown Omaha fire says the Metropolitan Utilities District should be held responsible for the natural gas explosion.

North Central Service of Bemidji, Minnesota, blames the utility in its response to a lawsuit over the Jan. 9 fire in the Old Market area.

City officials and safety regulators have said North Central’s workers struck a natural gas line in front of M’s Pub before the fire.

Gas leaked into the basement of the building and exploded. An M’s Pub employee was taken to a hospital with cuts and a firefighter was treated after slipping on ice.

MUD says North Central failed to follow routine procedures to locate underground gas lines before beginning to drill.
