2 ordered to send trial in killing of Nebraska man in Kansas

gavel-and-scaleSALINA, Kan. (AP) — A judge has found sufficient evidence for two people to stand trial in the killing of a Nebraska man in a Salina motel parking lot.

21-year-old DiAntre Lemmie and 24-year-old Amber Craig were bound over for trial Tuesday. They are charged in the fatal April shooting of 32-year-old Adonis Loudermilk, of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Among the preliminary hearing witnesses was James Faircloth, who tattooed Lemmie at the motel. Faircloth said he heard Craig tell Lemmie that Loudermilk had a “wad” of cash, and that Lemmie vowed to “get that.” Later, Lemmie left the room, and Faircloth said he heard Lemmie say, “I know you got it,” followed by gunshots.

Fairchild testified Craig then said that she didn’t think Lemmie would “take it that far.”

Omaha house fire injures 1 man, 2 firefighters on Tuesday

OMAHA-FIRE-AND-RESCUE-BADGEOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A house fire has led to minor injuries for three people, including two Omaha firefighters.

Officials say the fire occurred Tuesday morning just north of 120th and Blondo Streets in northwest Omaha.

Responding firefighters reported heavy smoke and flames when they arrived at the one-story home just after 7 a.m.

Battalion Chief Tim McCaw says four adults and one child escaped from the blaze after a neighbor called 911 and knocked on the door of the burning home to alert the occupants.

McCaw says an elderly man was treated for smoke inhalation. A firefighter also twisted an ankle while fighting the fire inside the home, and other firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

Bellevue city administrator charged in dental office dust-up

city-of-bellevueBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — An eastern Nebraska city administrator has been charged with various misdemeanors for a disturbance at a local dental office.

Bellevue City Administrator Dan Berlowitz was ticketed on the counts on June 21 following the disturbance that morning at Allan Smith Dental in Bellevue, where Berlowitz’s wife used to work.

A police report says Berlowitz poked a dentist in the chest and then pushed the dentist’s shoulder.

Berlowitz has since been charged with trespassing, disturbing the peace and third-degree assault, all misdemeanors. His arraignment has been set for July 27 in Sarpy County.

Berlowitz has been placed on administrative leave. A phone number for Berlowitz could not be found Tuesday.

Man accused of sex assaults on drunken girl, 16, in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police say officers have arrested a man who got a 16-year-old drunk and then had sex with her in a portable toilet and elsewhere near downtown Lincoln.

Court records say 36-year-old Marvin Velasquez is charged with sexual assault of an incompetent person. They don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Velasquez.

The records say the girl told investigators that her boyfriend dropped her off downtown around 5 p.m. June 21 so she could meet a friend. She says she came upon a man whom she asked to buy her alcohol. An affidavit says the two shared the booze while sitting under a bridge. She says he then forced her into having sex in the portable toilet and elsewhere because she was too drunk to stop him.

Police release names of officers who fatally shot suspect

The officers were identified in a police news release Tuesday as Sgt. Mario Robinson, a 22-year veteran of the department, and Officer Josh Atkinson, who’s been on the force for eight years.

Police say the two confronted 22-year-old Germichael Kennedy, of Lincoln, around 9 a.m. Sunday and shot him when he pointed a handgun at them. Investigators think Kennedy fatally shot 20-year-old Marlene Rashidi and wounded 23-year-old Dezarae Mann as the two were sitting in separate cars around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Both officers are on paid administrative leave.

2 injured in Omaha home fire that damaged neighboring house

fireOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two people have been injured in an Omaha house fire that spread to a neighboring structure.

The blaze was reported around 7 a.m. Tuesday in northwest Omaha. There were four adults and a child in the home at the time. Dispatchers say an elderly person who was injured was taken to a hospital, as was the other injured person.

Firefighters say the fire apparently began in a garage, spread to the house and then caused minor damage to a house next door.

The fire cause is being investigated.

2 companies chosen for Nebraska youth grant program

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Companies from Hebron and Omaha are the newest recipients of a Nebraska state grant program that connects young people to careers in manufacturing and technology.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Monday that state officials have selected MetalQuest of Hebron and Distefano Technology & Manufacturing of Omaha. The companies will participate in the Nebraska Developing Youth Talent Initiative, a program proposed by Ricketts last year to foster partnerships between private industry and public schools.

MetalQuest is working with the South Central Unified School District to offer a career pathway program for students with a focus on manufacturing.

Man in Omaha hurt when firecracker explodes in his hands

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a man was seriously injured when he lit a firecracker and it exploded in his hands.

The man was hurt Monday morning after lighting the firecracker at a moving company and storage warehouse in southwest Omaha.

Matt Manhart, of the Omaha police bomb response team, says the man lit the commercial firework in his hand, then wasn’t able to toss it before the firework exploded.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, was taken to Nebraska Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries to both hands.

Manhart wouldn’t describe the injuries.

Police ID man killed by officers, women police say he shot

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of a man fatally shot by Lincoln officers and the women police say he was suspected of shooting.

On Monday police identified the man as 22-year-old Germichael Kennedy, of Lincoln. Police say two officers confronted Kennedy on a Lincoln street around 9 a.m. Sunday and shot him when he pointed a handgun at them.

Police say investigators think he fatally shot 20-year-old Marlene Rashidi and wounded 23-year-old Dezarae Mann as the two were sitting in separate cars around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Rashidi was identified as a Lincoln High School graduate who was attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney and was on the track team.

Police don’t yet know whether Mann and Rashidi were acquainted but say Rashidi and Kennedy knew each other.

2 killed in collision north of Norfolk, authorities say

madison-county-sheriffNORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died in a head-on collision just north of Norfolk.

The collision occurred Sunday on U.S. Highway 81. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says a car being driven north in the southbound lane struck an oncoming vehicle, killing its driver and a passenger.

Authorities say the car driver escaped before his car burst into flames. Information on his condition has not been released.
