Canadian company selects Beatrice for turkey hatchery

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A Canadian company has selected Beatrice as the site for a $6 million turkey hatchery.

Hybrid Turkeys, of Kitchener, Ontario, announced Monday that it expects the hatchery to be running by July 2017, employing 25 full-time workers.

Gage Area Growth Enterprise Executive Director, Walker Zulkoski says Hybrid Turkeys is part of Hendrix Genetics, a Netherlands-based company.

Once the eggs are hatched, the young turkeys are vaccinated and shipped to growing operations within 24 hours, all around the country.

Man, woman imprisoned for Omaha park slaying

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man and woman have been sent to prison for the fatal shooting of their victim during a robbery at an Omaha park.

Twenty-seven-year-old Anthony Hollins had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and to a weapons charge in the slaying of 46-year-old Ray Patterson on Jan. 25, 2015, at Norwick Park. On Monday Hollins was given 55 to 80 years in prison.

His accomplice, 21-year-old Janessa Arias, had pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit robbery. She was given 20 to 30 years.

In court Hollins offered his regrets to Patterson’s family.

Woman dies after fall from third-floor Omaha balcony

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a woman has died after falling from a balcony in west Omaha.

Police say the accidental fall occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday from the third floor of an apartment complex in west Omaha.

Police say the woman died at a hospital Monday morning. She’s been identified as 63-year-old Colleen McMahon.

Lincoln to construct permanent hazardous waste facility

Hazardous-ChemicalsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln officials say the city has amassed enough funds to build a permanent hazardous waste facility that could open by fall 2017.

Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department Director Judy Halstead says the city can move forward with design and construction plans after collecting $320,000 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, $300,000 from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and $600,000 in city tax dollars.

The building will store household and small business hazardous waste until the city’s national contractor collects it. Hazardous waste that will be collected include pesticides, car fluids, cleaning agents, and items that contain mercury and oil-based paint.

Halstead says there will be no permanent staff at the facility, which will be built near the city’s landfill transfer station.

Man killed when motorcycle crash propels him over barrier

fatal-motorcycle-crashOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man has died in the crash of his motorcycle on Interstate 480 in Omaha as he headed toward Iowa.

Officers and medics were dispatched around 6:10 p.m. Sunday after the crash was reported near the 8th Street underpass.

Omaha police say the man lost control of his motorcycle after striking a concrete barrier. The impact propelled him over the barrier and onto the ground below. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Omaha police identified him as 29-year-old Mark Adams, who lived in the Omaha suburb of La Vista.

state-patrol-logoSOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) — A northwest Iowa city clerk has been arrested and charged after police say he tried to meet an underage boy in Nebraska for sex.

Lawton, Iowa, City Clerk Douglas Furlich has been charged with sexual assault through use of an electronic device.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the 60-year-old posted an ad online saying he was “looking for a younger guy.” The patrol says an undercover officer responded, pretending to be a 15-year-old boy. Court documents say Furlich went to a South Sioux City park Thursday night to meet with the boy. He was met by police and arrested.

Furlich is being held on $250,000 bail. He remained in the Dakota County Jail on Sunday and could not be reached for comment.

City of Omaha preparing for invasion of emerald ash borer

EmeraldOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The City of Omaha has begun preparing for an infestation of the emerald ash borer.

Mayor Jean Stothert said Friday that she will budget $1 million a year in the city’s five-year capital improvement program, beginning in 2017. The city has begun preparing for the expected infestation by cutting down unhealthy ash trees and buying tree-removal equipment.

City Parks Director Brook Bench says the city has hired a four-person tree-trimming crew devoted solely to ash trees.

The insects are native to Asia and were first spotted in the U.S. in 2002, when they showed up in the Detroit area. The emerald ash borer has killed millions of trees. Once infected, trees typically die within five years.

Iowa trial set in Nebraska man’s hit-and-run case

gavel-moreCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Nebraska man accused of a fatal hit-and-run in western Iowa is set to stand trial later this summer.

44-year-old Tracy Peniska has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatality accident and obstructing prosecution. His trial has been set for Aug. 9.

If convicted, Peniska could face up to seven years in prison.

Police say Peniska was driving his car March 9 on the Interstate 480 bridge in Council Bluffs when he hit a pedestrian, 29-year-old Brett Jensen. Police say Peniska reported his car stolen to Omaha police later that night, but eventually told police he had made up the stolen-car story.

Peniska is free on $5,000 bail. A phone number for Peniska could not be found Saturday.

Omaha Girl injured on carnival ride ready to go home

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An 11-year-old girl who had her scalp partially torn off nearly a month ago when her hair got caught in the gears of a carnival ride says she’s ready to go home.

Elizabeth “Lulu” Gilreath briefly spoke to reporters Friday at a news conference held at the Omaha hospital where she’s been a patient for four weeks.

Her injury occurred May 7 at a Cinco de Mayo festival in Omaha. Witnesses have said the girl’s ponytail got caught in the ride’s moving parts. She was taken to Nebraska Medical Center after the incident, where she’s had several surgeries. She could go home as soon as Monday.

Nebraska investigators found no indication that the spinning ride was malfunctioning when the incident happened.

Nebraska event aimed at helping families new to camping

yellowstone-campgroundLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has organized an event aimed at helping families that are new to camping.

The Becoming an Outdoors-Family Campout is scheduled for June 25-26 at Two Rivers State Recreation Area. The recreation area sits about 3½ miles southwest of Waterloo in eastern Nebraska.

There will be lake fishing, kayaking, archery and shooting sports, guided by expert instructors. Other workshops will cover geocaching, aquatic ecology and outdoor cooking.
