OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police have announced the death of a squirrel that hung out around police headquarters and had his own Twitter following.

Police say the squirrel, which went by @OPDSquirrel on the social media site, was found dead in the police headquarters’ parking lot in downtown Omaha.

A post by Omaha Officer Michael Bossman on Tuesday announced the death, accompanied by a picture of a dead squirrel outlined with chalk.

The squirrel’s Twitter account, however, remains active. The rodent’s nearly 350 followers have been treated to follow-up tweets from friends and family — including one from Mrs. OPDSquirrel, who thanked everyone for their kind words and said “he will be sorely missed by our 35 children and I.”

Police suggest donations to First Responders Foundation of Omaha in lieu of flowers.

Ex-NAACP Official’s Visit to Omaha University Draws Backlash

UNMCOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha residents have raised concerns about a visit from Rachel Dolezal, who resigned as president of an NAACP chapter in Washington last year after it was revealed that she is white.

University of Nebraska Medical Center professor Dr. Renaisa S. Anthony’s decision to bring her to Omaha to talk about race on Wednesday sparked a backlash on social media.

Anthony says she organized an invitation-only dinner with Dolezal for 25 people, including faculty, students and people from the community, as part of the university’s series of events called “Race-Inclusion-Diversity & Equity.”

Anthony welcomed the controversy, saying that she sought a “polarizing national figure” to attract people’s attention and start a conversation.

Hastings Woman Gets Probation for Employment Violation

gavel-moreLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Hastings woman has been given a year of probation and fined $500 for her role in the unlawful employment of someone authorities say was living in the country illegally.

Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Stephanie Hagemeier was manager at the Holiday Inn Express in Hastings and knew the Mexican citizen who worked as housekeeping supervisor was being investigated by the Social Security Administration. The woman left the hotel for one in Kearney that also was run by Kearney Hospitality Inc.

Prosecutors say Hagemeier re-employed the woman under a different name at the behest of Paul Younes, who was an officer and director of Kearney Hospitality. Younes is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

A judge Wednesday sentenced 37-year-old Bryan Black to 32 to 60 years in prison.

Black pleaded no contest in January to attempted sexual assault of a child and visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct.

Prosecutors say Black began a relationship with a Millard North High School student in September 2014. The girl made her allegations in March 2015, a day before Black was arrested.

Black apologized in court Wednesday. His attorney asked for the minimum sentence of three years in prison, noting that Black was previously a military police officer who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

800-Yard-Long Drug Tunnel Found Between Mexico and San Diego

dept.-of-justiceSAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal officials in San Diego say they have discovered an 800-yard-long secret tunnel under the U.S.-Mexico border, resulting in the seizure of more than a ton of cocaine and seven tons of marijuana.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that the tunnel extends from a house in Tijuana, Mexico, to a fenced lot in a San Diego industrial area.

The tunnel was equipped with a rail system, ventilation, lights and a large elevator.

The tunnel exit on the U.S. side is about 3 feet wide and was covered by a trash bin. About 500 yards of the tunnel are on the U.S. side of the border.

Officials say six people were arrested in San Diego on Friday and charged with crimes involving drugs and construction of the tunnel.

Obama Raises 2011 Flood Recovery Funding for Omaha Tribe

omaha-tribe-of-nebraskaMACY, Neb. (AP) — The White House says the Obama administration has raised the federal share of public aid for the Omaha Tribe’s recovery from the 2011 Missouri River flooding.

A news release sent Wednesday says the level has been raised to 90 percent of the total eligible costs from 75 percent. It’s unclear why the aid was increased. A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman said he couldn’t immediately reply. A tribal representative didn’t immediately return a message.

Hundreds of thousands of acres of land were flooded along the Missouri River in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri in 2011 after heavy spring rains and a giant mountain snowpack forced massive releases from upstream dams.

The Omaha Indian Reservation lies primarily in northeast Nebraska but extends across the Missouri River into Monona County, Iowa.

A news release from the Douglas County attorney’s office Wednesday says Orling Carrasco-Zelaya also will be charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and third offense drunken driving. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could speak for Carrasco-Zelaya.

The office says Carrasco-Zelaya also goes by the name of Edwin Elvir-Palma, but Carrasco-Zelaya is on his Honduran birth certificate. A police report says Carrasco-Zelaya has been a fugitive from U.S. immigration authorities since 2012.

Authorities say Combs jumped onto Petersen’s vehicle as the three men fled but then fell or was thrown, suffering head injuries. Combs died in a hospital later that day.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man who police say killed an unintended victim has been given 40 to 50 years in prison.

23-year-old Kevin Mejia (meh-HEE’-uh) was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County District Court. He’d pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a weapons charge after prosecutors lowered the original homicide charge from second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Mejia and an accomplice, James Vega, went to an Omaha house in October 2014 because they were angry with someone over a drug deal. Mejia fired twice at the house, and police say the man who was struck by one of the bullets, 23-year-old Jose Fabila (FAH’-bee-luh), wasn’t the man Vega and Mejia were upset with.

Vega also was sentenced Tuesday. He was given three to four years as an accomplice.
