Pickup Driver Died in Hall County Collision, Authorities Say

Hall-County-SheriffCAIRO, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a pickup driver has been killed in a collision with a semitrailer in south-central Nebraska.

The accident occurred around 8:30 Thursday morning about 2½ miles south of Cairo (KEH’-roh) at the intersection of West Airport Road and Nebraska Highway 11. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says the semitrailer rolled onto its left side, spilling some of its contents onto the highway. The semi’s driver suffered only minor injuries.

The names of both drivers and other details about the accident have not been released. The pickup driver was described as a man from rural Buffalo County.

Manager Seeks to Improve Lancaster County Transit Service

20080805_rural_road_33LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Efforts are underway to improve a transit service that’s been providing weekday rides to residents in rural Lancaster County for nearly 35 years.

The transit service’s new manager, Mitch Sump, is seeking ways to make it more useful and better known. He’s also trying to battle misconceptions that the service is just for seniors, is limited by income and is only for medical appointments and grocery shopping.

Anyone, regardless of age and income, can utilize the door-to-door service for $2 per ride.

Sump says the service currently averages about 29 passengers per week, but it has the capacity to do more.

This year’s budget is expected to be about $80,000.

YORK, Neb. (AP) — Inmates at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women start preparing to reintegrate into the community as soon as they arrive at the York prison.

The facility hosts groups that offer housing, employment, encouragement, counseling and other support services twice a year in an effort to make the transition successful for inmates.

Unit administrator Steve Hunzeker says about 150 inmates who are eligible for release or parole prior to July 2017 were given the opportunity last week to seek services from 15 agencies that set up booths as part of the prison’s re-entry fair.

Among the groups offering information to the inmates was a Christian-based shelter called the Living Water Rescue Mission in York.

Another group, Compassion in Action, offered pre-release education to the inmates.

York County Board Discusses Mowing of Illicit Ditch Crops

york-countyYORK, Neb. (AP) — York County commissioners are discussing mowing crops that have been wrongfully planted in county rights of way such as roadside drainage ditches.

The plantings raise issues of safety as the plants grow and hamper motorists’ vision at rural intersections.

Commissioner Paul Buller said at a commissioners meeting earlier this week that “some of the same people have been doing it for years.”

A warning and information letter that would be sent to farmers is being drafted for commissioners to consider at their next meeting.

Nebraska Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested in Iowa Casino Incident

douglas-county-sheriffCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a Nebraska sheriff’s deputy was arrested after a Council Bluffs casino incident.

Court records say 44-year-old Thomas Flynn is charged with public intoxication. Iowa online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Flynn. Flynn is a sheriff’s deputy in Douglas County, which includes Omaha.

A police report says a Council Bluffs officer was sent to help security officers at the Horseshoe Casino on Friday. The report says Flynn was unsteady on his feet and verbally combative.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says Flynn has been placed on desk duty pending an investigation.

Flynn was shot while on duty in 2011. The following year his department named him Deputy of the Year and gave him two medals.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man who fled from authorities after being charged in a fatal Omaha crash is now on the federal immigration agency’s most wanted list.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse announced Wednesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has added 19-year-old Eswin Mejia, a Honduras national, to its list of wanted suspects.

The agency’s listing says Mejia came to the country illegally in 2013.

Authorities haven’t seen Mejia since he posted bail and was released from jail in February. Federal officials previously declined requests made by Omaha police to detain Mejia.

Mejia was charged with felony motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving after a pickup he was driving crashed into an SUV driven by 21-year-old Sarah Root, who was killed.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors are seeking to remove defense lawyers representing a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine filed a motion Wednesday against attorneys for Anthony Garcia, who is charged with first-degree murder. He’s asking the court to prohibit Chicago attorneys Alison Motta, Robert Motta Sr., and Robert Motta Jr., from practicing law during their time in Nebraska.

Kleine claims Alison Motta violated a court order when she told reporters DNA evidence exonerated her client. Kleine says those statements are false.

Garcia is charged in the 2008 deaths of Thomas Hunter, the son of Creighton University pathologist William Hunter, and Shirlee Sherman, the family’s housekeeper. He’s also charged in the 2013 deaths of Creighton pathologist Roger Brumback and his wife.

Zoos, Feds Ask Court to Dismiss Elephant Importation Lawsuit

henry-doorly-zooWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Federal wildlife officials and three U.S. zoos want a judge to drop a lawsuit against the recent importation of African elephants.

In a motion to dismiss the case, the zoos said legal concerns about the permit process were irrelevant because the 17 elephants were flown from Swaziland earlier this month. The zoos are in Wichita, Kansas; Dallas; and Omaha, Nebraska.

Friends of Animals sued in February to stop the importation, alleging the government violated the law by approving the importation. The animal rights group hasn’t dropped the suit, saying it needs to prevent future importations.

The Connecticut-based nonprofit, along with other conservationists and animal-rights supporters, says it opposed the importation to the three U.S. zoos because elephants are highly intelligent, migratory animals.

Nebraska Man Gets Probation for Helping to Fake Robbery

gavel-and-scaleOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A northeast Nebraska man has been given three years of probation for helping to fake a robbery.

29-year-old Steven Schulze was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Omaha. He was convicted of helping Michael Bamberry pretend to hold up the Pony Express convenience store in Rosalie. The store’s owned by the Winnebago Tribe.

Investigators say Bamberry used a toy gun to menace Schulze, who was a clerk at the store. Schulze gave Bamberry $907 from the register.

Bamberry is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.

Rising City Faces Uncertain Times as School Readies to Close

rising-city-neRISING CITY, Neb. (AP) — As Rising City’s only middle school prepares to close, residents of the rural Nebraska village are worried about their community’s future.

It’s difficult to predict whether any of the village’s 365 residents will relocate after the middle school of approximately 90 students closes at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year.

Rising City merged with Shelby five years ago to create Shelby-Rising City Public Schools. The district consolidation shifted elementary and high school students from Rising City to Shelby, which is about 7 miles west. Then in 2015, voters approved a nearly $15 million bond issue to expand the school in Shelby and create a single site for the district.

The community hasn’t decided what to do with the outdated building after the school closes.
