Hastings official takes plea deal in Lincoln assault case

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) – A Hastings city official accused of assaulting an Uber driver in Lincoln has taken a plea deal.

Lancaster County Court records say 37-year-old Steven Kostner pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor assault. Prosecutors had lowered the charge from felony terroristic threats in exchange for Kostner’s plea. His sentencing is scheduled for March 14.

Lincoln police arrested Kostner on March 18. The Uber driver told police Kostner had grabbed the driver’s seat belt and pulled it across the driver’s neck and also menaced him with a pocketknife. Kostner told officers the driver had flirted with Kostner’s wife, who was with Kostner that morning.

Hastings’ web page lists Kostner as street superintendent.

1 man killed in Platte County highway collision

DUNCAN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one person has died in a collision between a semitrailer and a pickup truck just east of Duncan in eastern Nebraska.

Columbus Fire Chief Dan Miller says the man was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday. The collision occurred a little after 5 p.m. on U.S. Highway 30.

Platte County authorities haven’t released his name or other details about the crash.

Owner turns over 84 cats to Lincoln animal shelter

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say a Lincoln animal shelter has received 84 cats from their owner.

Matt Madcharo of the Capital Humane Society says the anonymous owner turned over some of the cats Saturday and the rest on Sunday.

Many were immunized for feline leukemia this week, and neutering and spaying got underway as well.

Some of the cats already have been adopted, but Madcharo says the shelter also could use money for food, supplies and medical care.

Authorities release name of man fatally shot in Omaha suburb 

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) – Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot in an Omaha suburb.

Bellevue police have been investigating the shooting of 23-year-old Brian Faeller-Crom as a homicide. He was found wounded at the Pheasant Ridge Apartments on Tuesday night. Police say he was pronounced dead later at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

No arrests have been reported.

Omaha child care business shuttered after man charged

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — State officials have shut down an Omaha in-home daycare business after the owner’s husband was charged with two counts of first-degree child sex assault.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says 62-year-old William Harrison is accused of molesting a child between December 2014 and December last year.

Deb’s Day Care in the Keystone neighborhood is now under an emergency order to close. Police arrest records say Harrison is accused of carrying out the assaults at the daycare.

A phone message left Wednesday at the Harrison home was not immediately returned.

Man imprisoned for 2 Omaha robberies

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to two Omaha robberies has been imprisoned.

U.S. District Court records say Edward Sherrod was sentenced Monday to 90 months in prison and was ordered to pay nearly $19,500 in restitution. He’d pleaded guilty to two robbery counts after prosecutors agreed to drop a third count.

The records say he used a toy gun and nylon masks to cover his face when he robbed a Baker’s supermarket on July 5, 2017, and a Mega Mart on July 24, 2017. Prosecutors say a witness got the license number of a car Sherrod used for the Mega Mart heist, and investigators traced it to a rental company. He was arrested when he returned the car to the rental office.

Deputies find missing girl they tracked through snow

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lancaster County sheriff says deputies have found a missing 12-year-old girl they tracked through the snow on a frigid morning.

Sheriff Terry Wagner says the girl had left her home around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after arguing with her sister. The family called for help, and two of the seven deputies dispatched found tracks that led them to the girl around 8 a.m.

Wagner says she was huddled in a ravine about a half-mile from her house, which sits about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Lincoln. She had a robe with her and was wearing snow boots.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. It was 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2.22 Celsius) at the time.

Her name wasn’t released.

2 men held after 220 pounds of pot found in SUV along I-80

YORK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two men were arrested after officers found an estimated $600,000 worth of marijuana in their sport utility vehicle along Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska.

The York News-Times reports that a deputy pulled over the SUV for a traffic violation Tuesday night in York County. Sheriff’s Lt. Josh Gillespie says the deputy grew suspicious and asked for consent to search the vehicle. None was given, so a drug K-9 was sent to the scene. It alerted officers to the presence of drugs.

Gillespie says deputies searched the SUV and found six suitcases that held a total of around 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of pot.

York County Court records don’t show the two men traveling in the SUV have been formally charged.

Principal who banned Christmas from school won’t return

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska principal placed on leave after a Christian group threatened legal action over her ban on Christmas and holiday symbols has been moved into a different district job.

Elkhorn Public Schools Superintendent Bary Habrock told parents and staff Monday evening that Jennifer Sinclair won’t be returning to Manchester Elementary School in Omaha.

Habrock says the district supports Sinclair “as a leader and educator,” and that she’ll spend the rest of the school year in a curriculum position.

Sinclair didn’t immediately return a message Tuesday from The Associated Press.

Sinclair sent a memo to staff in November that, among other things, barred Santa and Christmas images . She said her intent was to create an inclusive environment for students of varied religious beliefs.

Florida-based Liberty Counsel, which represents evangelical Christians, later sent a letter demanding a reversal of the ban.

Omaha man accused of killing son pleads no contest

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man accused of killing his 2-month-old son has pleaded no contest.

Douglas County District Court records say 19-year-old Missael Valadez entered the plea last week. The charge: child abuse resulting in death. He’ll be sentenced in March.

Police say Valadez told police he’d shaken little Sebastian Valadez on Aug. 25, 2017, because he wouldn’t stop crying. The boy died at a hospital after he was taken off life support.
