OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two men have been arrested in the death of a man whose body was found in a central Omaha home.

Charles A. Keathley was found dead on May 30. Authorities have declined to release Keathley’s cause of death, but police say that the circumstances are suspicious and they are treating the case as a homicide.

Thirty-seven-year-old Sha’Ron Ellis was arrested Friday and is charged with first-degree murder. He is currently in the hospital and under police guard. Authorities did not say why he is in the hospital.

Thirty-nine-year-old Christopher R. Myers was also arrested Friday and was charged with one count of being an accessory to a felony in the case. He is currently being held in the Douglas County Department of Corrections.

It is unclear if either man has an attorney.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — More than 30 puppies are being nursed back to health after being rescued from a breeder in central Nebraska last month.

A $10,000 grant will pay for the care of those puppies at the Central Nebraska Humane Society.

The Grand Island facility took possession of 31 dogs on Jan. 11. Since then, one of the dogs had a litter of puppies to bring the total to 35. Another litter is expected soon.

Executive Director Laurie Dethloff estimates it will cost $12,000 to $14,000 to rehabilitate the dogs. She says many of them will lose all of their teeth because they are in bad condition.

Four of the dogs have been adopted and two are in foster care. One is available for adoption.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman is facing a charge of drunken driving after her car smashed into a house Saturday night.

Lincoln Police say the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on South 77th Street.

The 32-year-old woman’s car hit a mailbox and hit a brick home.

Two residents of the home told police the woman was trying to back out when they came outside to check on her.

Officers determined the woman had a blood-alcohol level of 0.148. That’s well above the legal limit of .08.

The crash caused about $5,000 damage to the home.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say a 24-year-old day care worker has told investigators that he sexually assaulted as many as eight girls under the age of 3.

Mark Mays, of Omaha, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of eight counts of child sexual assault. He was charged Friday with one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Police say detectives with the Omaha Police special victims unit were called to investigate after other day care workers reported finding Mays with a 2-year-old girl, who was naked.

Police say Mays told investigators he had sexual contact with eight girls ranging in age from younger than 2 to 3 years old. Mays is being held in the Douglas County jail on $2 million bail and could not be reached for comment.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A woman charged with helping her boyfriend, charged with killing his mother and 4-year-old half brother, is arguing that statements she made to police should not be allowed into evidence at her trial.

Police think 25-year-old Gabriela Guevara helped 25-year-old Roberto Martinez-Marinero load his gravely-injured mother in a car and dump her body. Police say Guevara also was with Martinez-Marinero when he dumped his then-11-month-old half brother in a La Vista dumpster and threw his 4-year-old half brother from an Elkhorn River bridge to his death.

Guevara now says her statements to police should be thrown out because she feared police and Martinez-Marinero, whom she said had abused her.

The judge is expected to rule in a few weeks on her request.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 51-year-old Lincoln woman who stabbed her husband with a fillet knife as he napped has been sentenced to five to 10 years in prison.

Teresa Gillispie was sentenced Friday.

Gillispie tearfully asked for probation for the attack on her now ex-husband, who was her high school sweetheart and husband for 32 years.

Gillispie’s attorney said she had begun to experience serious mental health issues when she attacked her husband.

Prosecutors say Gillispie suspected her husband of cheating when she stabbed him as he slept on Jan. 25, 2015. He suffered six stab wounds to his chest, side, back and left forearm and thumb before he was able to escape and call 911.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The annual Dinosaurs and Disasters event has been scheduled for Saturday at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln.

Scientists, graduate and undergraduate students will provide activities and demonstrations to help visitors better understand Earth. Visitors will learn about animals and their environments past and present and test their knowledge of the Earth’s history.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a rock or fossil for scientists to identify.

The family fun day is to run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Morrill Hall, south of 14th and Vine streets.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man has been arrested in the dragging of a Lincoln police officer.

The Nebraska State Patrol took the suspect into custody Thursday night in Nebraska City.

Lincoln police say the officer was trying to arrest the man a little before 5 p.m. on suspicion of shoplifting. The officer reached into the man’s vehicle and struggled with him as he drove forward and backward, dragging the officer until the officer let go or was forced off.

Police Capt. Jeri Roeder said the officer’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The names of the suspect and the officer haven’t been released.

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A new administrator has been announced for the Beatrice State Developmental Center.

Courtney Miller, director of the Department of Health and Human Services Division of Developmental Disabilities, told members of the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee Thursday that Megan Gumbel has been selected. She is set to begin her new role as administrator March 15.

The center is a state-run home that has served people with intellectual or developmental disabilities since 1887.

Gumbel currently works for nonprofit Bethesda Lutheran Communities in Fort Wayne, Indiana, serving as the northeast regional director overseeing Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A Hastings woman accused of stuffing a baby wipe down the throat of a Nebraska toddler, killing her, has taken a plea deal.

An April 11 sentencing has been scheduled for Azudany Serrano-Contreras, who pleaded no contest and was convicted Thursday of negligent child abuse resulting in injury. She’d been charged with intentional child abuse causing death.

Serrano-Contreras is the aunt of Jessica Torres, who is the mother of the little girl, Aliyana Peterson.

Investigators have said Serrano-Contreras told officers she was baby-sitting Aliyana on March 12, 2015, when she cleaned the girl’s face, set the wipe down on a counter and turned to get lotion. She told officers Aliyana was gasping for air when she turned back. Aliyana was pronounced dead two days later.
