LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials in Lincoln say consent by victims is no defense against incidents of hazing. But that hasn’t kept those facing discipline or even criminal charges for hazing incidents at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from trying.

University police point to a recent investigation into a 2014 video that appears to show a fraternity member being branded with the fraternity’s letters.

Police say, when questioned, members of the fraternity said the student being branded willingly took part.

But state law does not excuse instances of hazing, even when victims agree to take part.

UNL Police Sgt. Dave Dibelka says the investigation into the branding video is ongoing.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police say they have arrested a 17-year-old on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and a weapons count following the shooting of a 14-year-old boy.

The older teen was arrested Friday night and taken to the Lancaster County Youth Services Center, where he remained Saturday.

Police say officers were called to the north 5th Street just after 8 p.m. Friday for a report of someone being shot.

Police Capt. Don Scheinost says arriving officers found the 14-year-old with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The 32-year-old son of a Lincoln councilman and a federal judge has been acquitted of a sexual assault charge.

Online court records say Jonathan Camp was found not guilty Thursday by a Lancaster County District Court jury. The charge was felony sexual assault of an incompetent person. The case went to the jury on Wednesday.

Authorities say the woman reported that he’d drugged her at a home on the night of Sept. 8, 2014. She reported that she fell asleep and awoke later to find Camp sexually assaulting her.

His parents are Councilman Jon Camp and U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ruled that a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school is competent to stand trial.

Douglas County District Judge Duane Dougherty issued an order Thursday saying 42-year-old Anthony Garcia is mentally fit enough to stand trial. The ruling came a week after three experts testified that Garcia is competent.

Garcia is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 deaths of the 11-year-old son of Creighton University pathologist William Hunter and the family’s housekeeper, and the May 2013 deaths of Creighton pathologist Roger Brumback and his wife.

Authorities say Garcia was motivated by revenge for being fired from Creighton’s pathology department in 2001.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Midland University students have staged a protest as part of class on life in the 1960s.

39 students took to the streets Thursday afternoon to protest high college tuition as part of the American Culture in the 1960s course. Students brainstormed ideas about what they wanted to protest, and unanimously chose tuition rates as their cause.

Class instructor Janet Lack said the protest provided students with the opportunity to see what others did to peacefully bring about change during the 1960s.

Lack said she contacted university officials and the Fremont Police Department to let them know that student protest would take place.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 37-year-old former English teacher has taken a plea deal in his Omaha sex-with-a-student case.

Online court records say Bryan Black pleaded no contest Thursday and was convicted of attempted sexual assault of a child and visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct. Prosecutors dropped an enticement charge in exchange for Black’s pleas. He’s scheduled to be sentenced April 13.

Prosecutors say Black began a relationship with a Millard North High School student in September 2014. The girl made her allegations in March 2015, a day before Black was arrested.

Black no longer works for the district.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman pulled from her burning home by a neighbor earlier this month has died from her injuries.

24-year-old Blair Callahan died around 8:30 a.m. Thursday at a local hospital, where she was taken with burns and injuries from smoke inhalation Jan. 8.

Callahan’s neighbor, Will Curtis Jr., was on his way home from work when he saw smoke coming from her home around 2:30 a.m. that morning.

Lincoln Fire Investigator Ken Hilger says Curtis forced his way into the house and found Callahan lying on the kitchen floor. He carried her out before an ambulance took her to the hospital.

Roughly $100,000 worth of damage was caused to the house and its contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

FREMONT, Nebraska (AP) — A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after Fremont police say he posted a Snapchat featuring a firearm.

A police department news release says a Fremont High School administrator called authorities Thursday morning after a student posted a Snapchat involving what appeared to be a firearm. Police say the post indicated a possible threat against the school.

Snapchat is a social media site where users can post videos or photos that are automatically erased after a certain time frame.

The 17-year-old suspected of making the post was not at school and was contacted at home. The firearm was later located at another residence and determined to be an airsoft gun.

An investigation determined the complaint was valid and the teenager was charged with terroristic threats, disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct.

CAIRO, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Grand Island man was killed when his car collided with a sport utility vehicle on an icy highway in Hall County.

The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. Thursday on Nebraska Highway 2, around four miles southeast of Cairo (KAY’-roh) in Hall County. The Sheriff’s Department says 35-year-old Jeremiah Roberts, of Ravenna (ruh-VEH’-nuh), was headed east on Highway 2 when he lost control of his SUV on the slippery roadway and struck an oncoming car.

The car driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The department identified him as 43-year-old Leopoldo Martinez. His two passengers and Roberts were hospitalized.
