1 Person Hospitalized After Fire at Beatrice Apartment

fire-graphicBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one resident has been hospitalized and at least four others have been displaced by a fire at an apartment complex for seniors in Beatrice.

The fire was reported just after 4 p.m. Thursday when someone saw smoke coming from an apartment window. Firefighters rescued a man from inside the apartment. He was taken to a local hospital and then to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. His name hasn’t been released.

Authorities say fire damage was contained to the apartment’s bedroom, but there was smoke and water damage elsewhere in the building.

Fire investigators say the blaze was caused by a discarded cigarette.

Kansas Man Killed in Nebraska Crash

fatal-accidentRED CLOUD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Kansas man has been killed in a south-central Nebraska highway crash.

The accident was reported around 5 p.m. Wednesday on Nebraska Highway 78, east of Red Cloud in Webster County.

The Webster County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 75-year-old George Pfrimmer, of Mankato, Kansas.

Driver Goes to Hospital After Snowplow Overturns in Omaha

snowstormOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say the driver of a snow plow in Omaha sought medical attention after his vehicle overturned while he was on the job.

The Omaha Police Department says the snow plow was in use Thursday night when it began to slide sideways on an ice-covered hill. The front of the vehicle and its tires struck a wooden utility pole and a raised curb, causing it to overturn onto its side.

Bryan Luttig, a plow driver for the city of Omaha, was taken to a local hospital following complaints of pain. He was later released.

The stretch of street where the snow plow overturned was closed for several hours. The vehicle was eventually towed away.

Christmas Eve Crash in Eastern Nebraska Kills Husband and Wife

fatal-crashSEWARD, Neb. (AP) — A husband and wife have been killed on Christmas Eve following a two-vehicle crash in eastern Nebraska.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old Quincy Bearce-Kimsey and 33-year-old Jessica Kimsey were killed Thursday morning after their vehicle struck a car driven by Cory Ficken.

Authorities say Bearce-Kimsey was unable to yield his vehicle at a stop sign because of snow in the area.

Bearce-Kimsey and Kimsey, both of Seward, were pronounced dead at the scene. Ficken was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Deadly Storm Scatters Damage Across the South

severe-weatherHOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — Residents of northern Mississippi and across the Southeast were beginning to take stock after fierce storms that killed at least six across the region whipped through.

The deadly spring-like storms killed three in Mississippi, two others in Tennessee and one in Arkansas before the worst passed Wednesday night.

Mulester Johnson says he and relatives were inside his house in Holly Springs, Mississippi, when the storm hit.

He says the wind tore the back of his house from its foundation and multiple sheds were missing afterward. Trees rested atop several trucks on his property, and slabs of brick walls were strewn throughout his yard.

Officials say a 7-year-old boy died in Holly Springs, Mississippi, when the storm picked up and tossed the car he was riding in.

1 Person Killed, 1 Injured in Omaha Crash

fatal-accidentOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one person has been killed and one injured in a northwest Omaha crash.

The accident occurred around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday when a sport utility vehicle ran off North 120th Street and rammed into a tree.

Omaha police say a passenger in the SUV died at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

The driver was taken to Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. Police identified him as 19-year-old Deangelo Peak, of Omaha.

Lincoln Man Accused of Photographing Sex Assault on 9-Year-Old Girl

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been accused of photographing his sexual assault on an unconscious 9-year-old girl.

Online court records say 55-year-old Alan Kosmicki is charged with sexual assault of a child and generating child pornography. Lancaster County Jail records say Kosmicki remained in custody on Thursday, pending $750,000 bail. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Kosmicki’s behalf.

Court records say a Seward man who bought the contents of a storage shed found a memory card among the items and then found explicit images of a man and girl on it. He turned it over to police.

Investigators say they determined that the man in the pictures is Kosmicki. He told investigators that he’s not the man in the pictures.

Man Shot Near Nebraska Capitol Pleads Not Guilty

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old man shot near the Capitol in Lincoln has pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges.

Tareik Artis was arraigned Wednesday on three counts of drug possession and one of possessing a stolen firearm. The Lincoln Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1RIEiwZ ) that a trial date has not been set.

Authorities say Lancaster County Deputy Jeffrey Moeller and a deputy U.S. marshal shot Artis on Sept. 22 after he pointed a loaded handgun at them. Police say Artis was fleeing from a Lincoln officer after a traffic stop.

Man Convicted of Manslaughter in Nebraska City Stabbing

stabbingNEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A February sentencing hearing has been scheduled for a Nebraska City man who’s been convicted of manslaughter.

Twenty-year-old Sebastien Hall pleaded guilty Tuesday in Otoe County District Court after prosecutors lowered the charge from second-degree murder. Hall also pleaded guilty to a weapons charge. Sentencing is set for Feb. 16.

Prosecutors say Hall killed 21-year-old Jacob Adams on July 19. Prosecutors say Adams was fighting with Hall and another man when Adams was stabbed in the chest and throat.

Man in Nebraska Gets Prison for Receiving Child Pornography

jailOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man in Nebraska has been sentenced in federal court to six years in prison for receiving child pornography.

U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg says in a press release issued Tuesday that 54-year-old James A. Wiehe was sentenced in federal court in Omaha. He was given five years of supervised release following his expected release from prison.

Authorities in eastern Nebraska began investigating Wiehe in late 2014. A search of his home in March led to an examination of his computer. Authorities say he used file wiping software to delete child pornography.
