OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been given 80 to 130 years in prison for raping, kidnapping and savagely attacking a woman over her boyfriend’s debt.

Thirty-three-year-old Ronald Ford Jr. was sentenced on Wednesday. He and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Shavontae Green, were convicted for the attack on the 38-year-old woman. Green was sentenced Tuesday.

Authorities say Ford was upset because the woman’s boyfriend owed Ford money for a laptop computer. Ford and Green went to the boyfriend’s house in January but found only the woman there. She was beaten, and then they kidnapped her and took her to their home.

Prosecutors say the woman was beaten again, sexually assaulted, burned with a cigarette, whipped with a chain, doused with boiling water and splashed with bleach.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are still searching for a man who may have fired his weapon at a pursuing officer in Grand Island.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. Monday at a McDonald’s restaurant on West Second Street. Police say the officer had been dispatched to the restaurant to remove a sleeping man. But when the officer arrived he came upon the man holding the gun on another man.

Police Capt. Dean Elliott says the officer and witnesses reported hearing shots as the man ran off upon seeing the officer. Elliott says it’s not known whether the man had aimed at the officer. Elliott also says police have had previous contacts with the man.

Sgt. Bud Edwards said Thursday that the man had not been found. His name hasn’t been released.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Redd has never served a prison sentence, but he has seen the effect of prison sentences on inmates through their art and writings.

The inmates “are starving for a way to voice their opinions.”

He’s giving them that chance.

He’s CEO of Unboxed, a magazine of collected life stories expressed through art, letters, poems and writings sent from prisons.

Redd works at the Food Bank of Lincoln as a distribution center assistant, and he puts out the magazine on his own time. The first issue of 1,500 copies came out in June 2014 and was sent to more than 1,100 penal institutions.

SCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) — A Schuyler man ruled competent for trial has taken a plea deal and been convicted of attempted murder for stabbing a woman.

43-year-old Amauri Herrera-Alvarez pleaded no contest on Wednesday in Colfax County District Court. Prosecutors dropped a weapons charge in exchange for his plea. His sentencing is set for Feb. 3.

Prosecutors say the incident was discovered on Nov. 2, 2014, outside a Schuyler apartment building. An officer cut a rope Herrera-Alvarez was using to hang himself from a tree. Inside the building they found the injured woman, who was in a relationship with Herrera-Alvarez.

Herrera-Alvarez intended to plead not guilty by reason of insanity but eventually was found competent to stand trial.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 16-year-old boy has been accused of recording inside a girls restroom at a high school.

Lincoln Officer Katie Flood says the boy was referred to juvenile court in connection to the incident Monday.

Flood says a 14-year-old girl from Lincoln High School was using the restroom Monday when she saw a hand holding a cellphone come up from the next stall.

The girl confronted the boy, who was later interviewed by police and school administrators.

Flood says no video was found in the boy’s cellphone.

CENTER, Neb. (AP) — A northeast Nebraska man has been sentenced to five to eight years in prison for stealing cattle from a feedlot.

Timothy Ketelsen was sentenced Tuesday in Knox County District Couty. He pleaded no contest in September to charges of tax evasion, theft and illegal sale of livestock.

Court documents say Ketelsen’s former boss reported that 13 head of cattle had been stolen from the feedlot. Investigators traced the cattle to a livestock market in Yankton, South Dakota, which paid Ketelsen for them.

Investigators also say they found four other instances in which it appears Ketelsen stole cattle.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 37-year-old man has been given jail time and probation for assaulting another inmate and for attempting to set fire to a Lincoln apartment complex.

Online court records say Alaric Harden was sentenced on Tuesday in Lancaster County District Court. He’d pleaded no contest to charges of assault and of attempted arson after prosecutors lowered the original charges.

Authorities say Harden tried to set fire to the complex on July 26 and say Harden assaulted another jail inmate on Aug. 24, while awaiting prosecution on the arson charge.

Harden was given credit for 121 days he’s already served behind bars.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old Texas man has been imprisoned in Nebraska for a brutal beating.

Online court records say Stelson Curry, of Cedar Hill, Texas, was sentenced Tuesday in Lancaster County District Court to 30 to 45 years. He’d pleaded no contest and was convicted after prosecutors lowered charges stemming from separate crimes.

Authorities say Curry and another man attacked 22-year-old Patrick Pantoja and 27-year-old Emmanuel Nartey, who were walking from an apartment to a college campus on Oct. 3, 2014. Pantoja was taken to a hospital with severe head trauma. James Price has been charged with aiding and abetting the assault.

In the other case, Curry was convicted of felony false imprisonment. The original charge was felony sexual assault.
