BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Downtown Beatrice is in the running to become a national historical district.

A meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10 at the Beatrice Public Library to discuss the nomination and what it could mean for the downtown.

Library Director Laureen Riedesel says she has been trying to get the downtown recognized as a historic district since the 1980s. The downtown may have a better chance now because some buildings have aged. The oldest buildings in Beatrice date to the 1870s.

Becoming a national historical district would provide the downtown with access to economic development tools to help businesses and properties make improvements.

A second meeting will provide more details about the proposed district’s boundaries.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound in southeast Omaha.

The victim was in serious condition and taken to a hospital around 7:30 p.m.

A police spokesman says officers did not find evidence that suggests the boy was shot where he was found. Police say he was uncooperative.

The name of the boy has not been released.

VALLEY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one person was killed and one injured when a speeding pickup rammed a security guard shack in the eastern Nebraska community of Valley.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A security guard was taken to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment.

Valley Police Chief Brett Smith says the pickup driver was racing away from an attempted traffic stop when his truck hit the shack at Valmont Industries.

Authorities have identified the driver as 58-year-old Richard Stubbs, of Omaha. The name of the security guard hasn’t been released.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 44-year-old Omaha woman has been given eight to 10 years in prison for fatally stabbing her boyfriend during a drunken fight last year.

Online court records say Colleen Cannon was sentenced Wednesday in Douglas County District Court. In August a jury convicted Cannon of manslaughter and use of a weapon in the April 4, 2014, slaying of 43-year-old Darryel Fields.

A roommate testified that the couple had been drinking and arguing before Fields was stabbed.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Hall County officials have passed new zoning regulations for adult-oriented businesses in the county.

The county board unanimously passed the regulations during a Tuesday morning meeting. The regulations include expanding zoning for strip clubs, cabarets, pornographic book and video stores, and other adult-oriented businesses from 300 acres to nearly 9,000 acres.

The new regulations state such businesses are prohibited from public full nudity and lewd and lascivious acts. The businesses also must close by midnight, and a six-foot buffer must be maintained between club employees and patrons.

The new regulations come amid a pending federal lawsuit against Hall County by a Lincoln businessman who wants to open a strip club. The lawsuit claims county zoning is too restrictive in the space set aside for adult entertainment.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer says he’s disappointed in a Georgia court’s decision to sentence a woman to probation for illegally buying a gun used to kill an Omaha officer.

On Monday, a judge sentenced Jalita Johnson, of Atlanta, to 180 days of home confinement and a year’s probation.

Federal prosecutors say Johnson said she was buying the handgun, a 50-round drum magazine and ammunition for herself. She later admitted she bought it on behalf of her boyfriend, Marcus Wheeler, a convicted felon.

Police say Wheeler opened fire on officers trying to arrest him on May 20, killing Officer Kerrie Orozco. Wheeler was killed when another officer returned fire.

Schmaderer says straw purchases are linked to gun violence, and “the court missed an opportunity to make a bold statement.”

WAYNE, Neb. (AP) — Two men have been given 30 to 60 months in prison for stealing an ATM from a northeast Nebraska bank.

Twenty-two-year-old Cody Murphree and 23-year-old Jacob Christiansen, both of Norfolk, were sentenced Wednesday morning in Wayne County District Court. They had pleaded guilty to theft after taking plea deals with prosecutors. The two also must make restitution of $13,900 to Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust in Hoskins.

A third man convicted of the same charges, 24-year-old David Rhodes, of Madison, Alabama, is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 2.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the ATM was taken on June 23 from the vestibule of the bank near the bank lobby.
