Papillion Man Gets 30 Day in Jail in Shooting of 2 Dogs

gavel-and-scalePAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A Papillion man found guilty of shooting his family’s two dogs with a BB gun, killing one, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Barry L. Richey was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded no contest in July to two counts of cruel mistreatment of an animal.

Prosecutors say Papillion police responded to a disturbance at Richey’s home on April 20. Police say Richey’s wife told officers that when she took her Yorkshire terriers to the veterinarian, she learned they had been shot several times. One dog later died.

Richey will only spend 20 days in jail due to time already served.

Trial of Woman in Toddler’s Death to Stay in Adams County

judgeshipHASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A district judge has denied a request to move the trial of a 34-year-old Hastings woman accused of suffocating a toddler with a baby wipe.

Mark Porto of Grand Island, an attorney for Azudany Serrano-Contreras, had asked for the change in venue, arguing that pretrial publicity had made it impossible for his client to get a fair trial in Adams County. That motion was denied Thursday.

Serrano-Contreras faces trial in January on a charge of committing intentional child abuse causing death. If convicted, she faces 20 years to life.

Prosecutors say Serrano-Contreras was baby-sitting 19-month-old Aliyana Peterson on March 12 when she stuffed a baby wipe down the girl’s throat. Serrano-Contreras has said the child put the wipe in her own mouth.

Prosecutor Sues Omaha, Alleges Race, Gender Discrimination

gavel-moreOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An African-American assistant city prosecutor in Omaha is suing the city, saying she didn’t get promotions and had to work in a hostile environment because of her race and gender.

Makayla Maclin’s lawsuit alleges management-level employees asked Maclin continually if she was pregnant or going to be, and that they said women are a “uterus factory.” Maclin also says she was passed over for promotions that white colleagues got instead, and that management has repeatedly asked her if she’s related to black criminal defendants.

The Omaha World-Herald (https://bit.ly/1R2tvtB ) reports the suit seeks money for lost wages based on promotions Maclin says she should have received.

City Attorney Paul Kratz said many of the complaints have been reviewed and officials “believe appropriate action was taken.” He declined to comment further.

Nebraska Innovation Campus to Open Soon, But Challenges Remain

university-of-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska’s new research park is ready to open, despite lingering challenges and questions from lawmakers who were asked to spend more on the project.

The Nebraska Innovation Campus will host an open house on Friday, one day after a ribbon-cutting with Gov. Pete Ricketts, University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds and other dignitaries.

The park is designed to promote partnerships between businesses and university researchers. It has attracted local and international companies as tenants, but others have backed out because of rent costs and competition from other areas.

Nebraska lawmakers are also looking to ensure the university has a plan to measure the project’s success. State officials approved $25 million for the project in 2011, but university officials returned this year to request another $25 million.

Hall County Officials Advance Changes for Adult Businesses

adults-onlyGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Hall County officials voted unanimously Wednesday to advance regulations that would expand opportunities for adult-oriented businesses in the county.

New regulations moved forward Wednesday by the county’s regional planning commission include expanding zoning for such businesses from 300 acres to nearly 9,000 acres. Proposed changes also specify that alcohol isn’t allowed at adult-oriented businesses, and that they must be 1,000 feet from houses, churches, schools, parks and recreational facilities.

Changes will be considered by the county board at an Oct. 20 meeting.

The proposal comes amid a pending federal lawsuit against the county by a Lincoln businessman who wants to open a strip club. The lawsuit claims county zoning is too restrictive in how much space is set aside for adult entertainment.
