Police: 10 Pounds of Meth Found in Couple’s Car Near Lincoln

METHLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A California couple has been arrested after authorities found more than 10 pounds of methamphetamine in their vehicle during a traffic stop near Lincoln.

According to court records unsealed Tuesday, a 45-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were arrested Sunday afternoon. The Lincoln Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1FjmQoK ) reports the two were pulled over by Nebraska State Patrol troopers for a routine traffic stop.

Christopher Apley, an investigator with the Drug Enforcement Administration, said a patrol officer grew suspicious and asked for permission to search the vehicle. Authorities found eight bundles of methamphetamine, weighing just over 10 pounds total, under the back seat.

According to Apley, authorities believe the methamphetamine was being transported from San Jose, California, to Omaha.

The two suspects face charges including passion with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Man Accused in 2007 Attacks Must Return to Nebraska Hospital

judgeshipYORK, Neb. (AP) — A 59-year-old man accused of trying to kill two relatives in McCool Junction has been returned to a psychiatric hospital.

Gilbert Hendricks was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to state care in 2008. The York News-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1IItNQr ) that Judge James Stecker of York County District Court granted a request last week by County Attorney Candace Dick that Hendricks remain in state care. Dick told Stecker that, based on examinations of Hendricks by medical professionals, “evidence exists that the individual remains mentally ill and dangerous.”

Hendricks’ mother told investigators that she awoke in her bedroom on Sept. 6, 2007, to find her son standing over her, cutting her throat. She says she fought him off. Hendricks’ sister was injured when she tried to protect her mother.

Lincoln Man Sentenced for Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old Girl

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man must serve more than 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl last year.

Lancaster County District Judge Andrew Jacobsen sentenced 29-year-old Sean Demitrius Phillips on Tuesday to 15 to 35 years on a charge of first-degree sexual assault.

Phillips will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years. He will be credited with more than a year for time already served.

A defense attorney, who sought a shorter sentence, argued Phillips and the girl had consensual sex in 2014 and the case was one of statutory rape. A prosecutor said the teen told Phillips “no” multiple times.

Phillips was convicted previously of attempted first-degree sexual assault and must already be registered as a sex offender.

Ex-Wrestler ‘Superfly’ Charged in Girlfriend’s 1983 Death

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A former professional wrestling star has been charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend in eastern Pennsylvania more than three decades ago.

Prosecutors on Tuesday announced the results of a grand jury investigation of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in the death of 23-year-old Nancy Argentino of Brooklyn, New York.

Argentino was pronounced dead after authorities were called to a hotel room near Allentown in May 1983.

Seventy-two-year-old Snuka, now living in Waterford Township, New Jersey, wrote in his 2012 autobiography that he was innocent in her death, which he said ruined his life. He said he never hit or threatened her.

Court records indicate that Snuka was arraigned Tuesday afternoon and sent to Lehigh County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Omaha Police Respond to Report of Man Severing Own Hand

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say a man severed one of his own hands with a knife at his home, then fled in his car before crashing it into a bridge in east Omaha.

Police say the incident began around 9:20 p.m. Monday when a woman called to report her husband had stabbed himself several times with a knife, then left. Officers were unable to find the 32-year-old man.

Shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday, police were called back to the home when someone reported that the man had returned and completely severed one of his hands with the knife and again fled in a car. A short time later, police responding to the crash found the man and took him to a hospital.

Police say his severed hand was found at his home.

New Club at Omaha College Offers Support for Mental Illness

unoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Members of a new student organization at an Omaha college are encouraging other students to join in their fight to destigmatize mental illness.

Last year, the National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter launched at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The four students on the chapter’s board have been working to grow its membership with publicity.

Two of the group’s student leaders and its advisor participated in a student activity fair last week in an effort to recruit students.

The chapter offers an outlet for students seeking support or counseling. It also holds events to increase awareness about mental illness.

National Alliance on Mental Illness has chapters on 105 college campuses nationwide. The University of Nebraska at Omaha chapter is the first one in the state.

Nebraska Man Sentenced for Federal Tax Fraud Scheme

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man has been ordered to pay nearly $57,000 in restitution and spend a dozen consecutive weekends behind bars for filing fraudulent federal tax returns.

Federal prosecutors also say Joshua Miles last week was sentenced to five years of probation.

The prosecutors say that between February 2009 and August 2010, co-defendant Magalita Gelin and Miles filed bogus returns for several people who went to the couple’s home in Bellevue. The tax returns claimed refunds totaling more than $111,000.

Man Rescued from Grain Bin in Eastern Nebraska

LOUISVILLE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 76-year-old man has been rescued from a grain bin in eastern Nebraska after being trapped in corn up to his chest.

Relatives said Marvin Manske was unloading corn from a bin in rural Louisville (LOO’-iss-vihl) when he became trapped around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Family members tried for more than an hour to free him, but they finally called for help.

Louisville Fire Chief Jason McClun says rescue workers provided oxygen to help Manske remain conscious, and special equipment was taken to the site.

Manske was pulled from the bin just after 8:30 p.m. He was flown to an Omaha hospital as a precaution.

Duct-Taped Nebraska Boys Made to Watch ‘Mommie Dearest’

police-lights-redNEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old man is accused of using duct tape to bind boys 4 and 6 to chairs and making them watch the movie “Mommie Dearest.”

Glenn Oliver is charged with two counts of child abuse and false imprisonment. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press, seeking comment on the allegations against Oliver.

Oliver had been baby-sitting the boys while their mother was at work on Sunday. Court records say Oliver reported to officers that the boys’ mother told them to watch the movie. He says they weren’t minding him, so he used the duct tape to secure them to the chairs while the movie played.

Man Arrested for Choking Lincoln Officer in Bank

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 21-year-old man has been arrested after police say he choked an officer at a bank in Lincoln.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Monday. According to Capt. Robert Farber, two officers responded to a report of a man having a heated argument with his mother, who is an employee at the bank.

Farber said when officers told the man to calm down, he began to shout at them. According to police, when an officer tried to arrest the man for refusing to comply, he broke free from the handcuffs and began to choke one of the officers.

Farber said the officer being choked used his Taser to subdue the man. The suspect was treated at a hospital before being taken to the Lancaster County jail.

He faces several charges including assault on a police officer and trespassing and disturbing the peace.
