Nebraska Man Accused of Shackling Teen to Keep Him at Home

child-abusePLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old eastern Nebraska man has been accused of shackling his teenage nephew to a bed to keep the boy from going out and misbehaving.

Court records say Wade Merry, of Plattsmouth, is charged with child abuse. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press, seeking comment about the allegations against his client.

Police say the 14-year-old was shackled to the bed at least a dozen times. A court document says Merry told police he restrained the boy while Merry worked overnight shifts at a bakery. Merry says he was frustrated by the boy’s behavior problems.

Police say Merry gave the boy a cup in case he needed to use a bathroom while shackled.

Nebraska Man Gets 9 Months in Jail for Best Friend’s Shooting Death

gavel-and-scaleFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old has been sentenced to around nine months in jail in the January shooting death of his best friend in Fremont.

Andrew R. Marty also was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months of probation for each count of manslaughter and third-degree assault. All sentences will be served concurrently.

Authorities say Marty and 19-year-old Kevin Michael Kennebeck were hanging out with two other friends on Jan. 25. They say that Marty pulled out a gun, eventually pointing it in the direction of Kennebeck when the weapon discharged.

Tanning Salon Owners Sue Nebraska Cancer Coalition

tanning-bedOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A group of tanning salon owners is suing the Nebraska Cancer Coalition, accusing it of making false, defamatory statements about tanning that have hurt the businesses.

The business owners operate 30 tanning salons in Omaha and Lincoln and said Wednesday they will file the lawsuit in Douglas County District Court.

The lawsuit says the coalition’s anti-tanning campaign called “The Bed is Dead” included inaccuracies and misleading elements, violating the Nebraska Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

The Nebraska Cancer Coalition, according to its website, is a statewide partnership of 350 people representing 200 public and private organizations working to prevent and control cancer.

Coalition President Alan Thorson, a colon and rectal surgeon in Omaha who is also named in the lawsuit, did not immediately return a message Wednesday seeking comment.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Yellowstone National Park officials are warning tourists to keep their distance after a bison flipped a woman into the air as she posed for a selfie with the massive beast.

The dangerous encounter was the fifth run-in between park-goers and buffalo at the park this year.

Park officials say the 43-year-old Mississippi woman turned her back on the animal Tuesday evening to get a photo with it on a trail near Old Faithful.

She and her daughter were about 6 yards away when it came at them.

They tried to run, but the bison caught the woman and tossed her with its head.

The woman’s family drove her to a nearby clinic where she was treated and released.

Yellowstone prohibits people from getting within 25 yards of bison.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Parents have been told the Lincoln federal building poses no dangers to children enrolled in the child care center there.

U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse had voiced concerns last week when he learned that an internal audit showed the National Soil Survey Center laboratory in the building was not in compliance with safety and fire codes.

Allison Azevedo with the General Services Administration and Soil Service Center director John Hempel met Tuesday with about 20 parents. Azevedo told them that all safety issues regarding storage of radioactive and flammable materials were resolved as soon as the survey center learned of them. She says the children “are in no imminent danger of anything associated with the lab.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A summer camp counselor suspects recent flooding may have helped unearth or carry to Lincoln a baseball-sized tooth believed to belong to a baby mammoth.

Wilderness Park Nature Camp counselor Colleen Zajac discovered the tooth lying on a muddy bank while leading young day-campers during a Tuesday exploration along Salt Creek.

Camp leaders say they had paleontologists verify the tooth belonged to a baby mammoth. Camp director Ted Hobrich says it hasn’t been decided yet if the tooth will be offered to researchers for further examination.

Around 60 children ages 7 through 9 participate in the program and are divided into six groups. The camp started in June.

Nebraska Nuke Plant Shuts Down After Coolant Pump Leaks

fort-calhoun-dryOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant has been shut down for repairs roughly a month after a planned outage for maintenance and refueling.

The Omaha Public Power District shut down the nuclear plant Monday after a water leak was discovered in one of Fort Calhoun’s four reactor coolant pumps after a seal failed.

The utility says the coolant water that leaked was contained inside the plant and treated.

A spokeswoman says Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors are monitoring the repairs.

Fort Calhoun sits along the Missouri River about 20 miles north of Omaha.

OPPD says the length of this outage will be determined by the repairs. If needed, the utility will buy electricity from other sources to maintain service.

OPPD has more than 360,000 customers in 13 counties in southeast Nebraska.
