Bellevue Plans to Move Into New City Hall by 2016

city-of-bellevueBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — A building that’s now occupied by a defense contractor likely will serve as Bellevue’s new City Hall by late 2016.

BAE Systems told the city last week that it plans to vacate the building by March 31 after deciding not to extend its lease. The building is one of three in an office complex that the city purchased for almost $4 million in 2012.

The city’s finance director, Rich Severson, says that after BAE Systems moves out, it probably will take a few months for renovations and for city government operations to move out of the current City Hall, which was built in the 1970s.

Severson says that around $250,000 has been set aside for the building’s renovation work.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old Omaha man has been given probation for his role in the death of a Fremont teen who was found outside in the bitter cold last fall.

Dakota McDonald was sentenced on Monday to 30 months of probation and must complete 120 hours of community service. He’d pleaded no contest and was convicted of a misdemeanor charge after making a deal with prosecutors, who lowered a felony charge of procuring alcohol for a minor that resulted in death.

Prosecutors say McDonald bought the alcohol that 16-year-old Jaime Valdez consumed before his death. A city worker found Valdez on the morning of Nov. 16, when the wind child was minus 16.

Authorities determined that Valdez died from hypothermia associated with acute ethanol intoxication.

Authorities: 5-Year-Old Girl Appears to Have Drowned in Grand Island Wave Pool

island-oasisGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a girl from Lincoln who died at a Grand Island water park appears to have drowned.

A preliminary autopsy released Monday indicates 5-year-old Nubari Koffree drowned Saturday afternoon.

The girl, who was with her mother at the park, was found in the wave pool area.

Grand Island Public Information Officer Wendy Meyer says the wave pool operates in 10-minute intervals and was not running at the time of the incident.

It’s the first drowning to occur in the 21 years the water park has been open.

Grand Island City Administrator Marlan Ferguson said the water park will continue to operate as the investigation continues.

New Marijuana Industry Wrestles with Pesticides and Safety

Colorado-MarijuanaDENVER (AP) — Microscopic bugs and mildew can destroy a marijuana operation faster than any police raid. And because the crop has been illegal for so long, neither growers nor scientists have any reliable research to help fight the infestations.

When most marijuana was grown in basements and backwoods, mold and spider mites could ruin only a few plants at a time. But as legal pot moves to warehouses and commercial fields, pests can quickly create costly problems for growers.

Some are turning to chemicals, raising concerns about safety.

Pesticides and herbicides are regulated by the federal government, which still regards almost all marijuana as an illicit crop. So there’s no roadmap to help pot farmers.

Chemists and horticulturalists can’t offer much assistance either. They sometimes disagree about how to combat the problem.

Historic Omaha Mansion Damaged by Fire to Be Demolished

fireOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An historic midtown Omaha mansion built more than a century ago and damaged by fire will be demolished.

The owner of the Arthur Metz mansion — built in the early 1900s for a member of the Metz brewery family — plans to redevelop the site for residential use, either as apartments or a house.

The three-story mansion just outside the Gold Coast Historic District sustained heavy damage Jan. 12 in a two-alarm fire. No one was injured, and investigators say it was caused by a space heater used to prevent pipes from freezing.

The mansion is not a designated local landmark, and Assistant City Planning Director Jay Davis told neighborhood leaders on Friday that there were no grounds to stop demolition.

City of Lincoln Seeing Recent Restaurant Boom

city-of-lincolnLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s capital city is seeing a boom in chain restaurants.

Work began this week on a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. Franchise owner Ron Oberg says it will be a new concept store that likely will be the biggest Freddy’s restaurant in the country, with seating for more than 150 people and a double drive-thru lane.

He hopes to have the restaurant open by the first or second week of November.

It’s one a string of restaurants either being built or recently opened in Lincoln. That includes Las Vegas-based sandwich chain Capriotti’s, Chick-fil-A, BurgerFi, Dunkin’ Donuts, Slim Chickens and Tom+Chee. Several other restaurants already established in the college town are expanding.
