Colorado Rejects PTSD as Ailment Eligible for Medical Marijuana

DENVER (AP) — Colorado’s Board of Health has voted against adding post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of ailments eligible for treatment with medical marijuana.

The 6-2 vote Wednesday came despite the backing of the state’s chief medical officer. The board has voted at least three times against adding PTSD to the list of eight debilitating conditions that qualify for medical pot.

Colorado hasn’t added an ailment to its medical pot list since voters approved the eight existing conditions in 2000. Board members cited a lack of research showing marijuana can treat PTSD.

Nine other states currently consider PTSD a condition eligible for treatment with medical marijuana.

Colorado has about 113,000 people on its medical marijuana registry. All have a doctor’s recommendation to use the drug to treat one of eight debilitating conditions, ranging from cancer and AIDS to severe pain.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have announced an arrest in the June shooting death of 36-year-old Terrell Brown behind an Omaha business center.

Apple’s iPod Touch Update Brings Faster Chip, Better Camera

AppleNEW YORK (AP) — Apple is refreshing its iPod Touch music player for the first time in nearly three years, as the company seeks to make music a central part of its devices once again.

The new Touch has a faster processor and better cameras, plus a software update that enables Apple Music, a $10-a-month service that offers unlimited playback of millions of songs. Apple Music launched June 30 as music fans increasingly embrace subscriptions over pay-per-song services such as Apple’s industry-leading iTunes.

The iPod was Apple’s first successful foray beyond personal computers. Interest has waned, though, as many people now use smartphones such as the iPhone to listen to music.

The starting price remains at $199.

60-Pound Dead Fish Found in Suburban Kansas Drainage

odd-newsOLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A suburban Kansas City animal control officer says she was skeptical when a man called to report a 4-foot-long carp in a drainage ditch.

But Jamie Schmidt, a school resource officer with the Olathe, Kansas, Police Department, soon found herself wrapping up the 60-pound dead fish in trash bags and using a lift to get it into her truck. It was actually 3 ½ feet long.

The unidentified man found the carp Friday in the ditch near an elementary school. Schmidt, who is filling in as animal control officer while the regular one is on maternity leave, thinks it came from a nearby lake after heavy rains.

Schmidt says it was easier to haul the fish away dead than had it still been alive.

LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — Police in the Omaha suburb of La Vista say a report of a mountain lion in a residential area appears to be credible, and they are investigating.

A person reported to police seeing a cougar near 103rd and Giles over the weekend.

The sighting comes two months after Omaha police shot and killed a mountain lion outside a commercial building at 102nd and Q streets.

In March, Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies searched a large field after somebody reported spotting a cougar near 144th and Pacific. They did not find a mountain lion.

Grand Island Seeks to Keep Minors from Having E-Cigarettes

ecigaretteGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska law already criminalizes minors possessing e-cigarettes, but Grand Island officials are pursuing a city ordinance declaring the same thing, nonetheless.

City Attorney Bob Sivick said police asked for the ordinance.

Sivick says the concern comes as e-cigarettes are growing in popularity — particularly among teens.

Sivick says having a city ordinance means the infraction can be prosecuted in municipal court and keep such cases from clogging the Hall County court system, where more serious crimes take precedence. Sivick says it also would give police the ability to confiscate e-cigarettes without the worry of having to return the product to the owner if the county attorney declines to prosecute.

Violation of the ordinance would carry a $25 fine.

Arrest Made in Lincoln Trailer Fire Believed to Be Arson

arsonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested a 19-year-old man they believe started a fire outside his girlfriend’s mobile home in Lincoln.

Firefighters were called to the blaze around 12:30 a.m. Monday — the fourth time in less than a month they had been called to the trailer park for a fire.

Investigators say the man moved to the mobile home park about a month ago, around the same time the string of fires there began. One of the fires on July 4 killed a dog.

The man, who has not yet been formally charged, was convicted in 2013 of arson and sentenced to a year in jail for starting a fire in the basement of a vacant Lincoln home.
