Nebraska Woman Accused of Trying to Poison Boyfriend’s Mom

gavel-and-scaleBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A woman in southeast Nebraska has been accused of putting carpet cleaner into her boyfriend’s mother’s drink in an attempt to poison her.

Court documents say 25-year-old Amanda J. Nelson, of Beatrice, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault after local authorities responded to a verbal disturbance at a residence. A woman there claimed her tongue went numb after drinking tea she had in the refrigerator. She threw up the drink.

Authorities say Nelson was angry with the woman. They say Nelson told officers she put carpet cleaner into the drink to poison the woman.

Nelson appeared in Gage County court Thursday. Records do not list an attorney.

Archway Officials Hope Numbers Point to Increased Attendance

archway-monumentKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Managers of The Archway monument that spans Interstate 80 at Kearney are optimistic that this year’s boost in attendance and revenue will continue throughout the year.

Through May, the monument has seen an increase in attendance and revenue this year from the first five months of 2014.

Officials acknowledge that the boost is due, in part, to the closure of the monument in January and February of 2014.

But officials say the attraction’s historically busiest months are June, July and August, giving them hope that the numbers will continue to grow.

The Archway features exhibits commemorating the Oregon, Mormon and California pioneer trails and the nation’s highway systems and railroads.

NU Board of Regents OKs Tuition Hike Over Next 2 Years

university-of-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Students at the University of Nebraska will pay more in tuition over the next two years after the university’s Board of Regents voted to end a two-year freeze on in-state tuition.

The board approved tuition hikes of 1.75 percent in 2015-16 and a 2.5 percent increase in 2016-17.

The increase will add about $3.50 per credit hour to tuition bills next year and $5 per credit hour the year after that.

NU President Hank Bounds told the regents that the tuition increases still keep the Nebraska university system’s costs below its peer institutions and fulfill the priorities of keeping the university affordable.

Study of Returns to the ER Suggests Lack of Follow-Up Care

Medical-ChartWASHINGTON (AP) — No one wants to make a repeat visit to the emergency room for the same complaint.

But new research suggests it’s more common than previously thought — and people frequently wind up at a different ER the second time around.

Already some ERs are taking steps to find out why and to try to prevent unnecessary returns.

The research suggests patients should be more aggressive in getting follow-up care.

It’s also a reminder of how disconnected our health care system is.

Chances are, your primary care doctor won’t know you made an ER visit unless you call about what to do next.

And if your second visit was to a different ER, often doctors can’t see earlier X-rays or other tests and have to repeat them, adding preventable costs.

Bank Project Draws Crowd as Pilger Continues Rebuilding

pilger-tornado-3PILGER, Neb. (AP) — A groundbreaking ceremony for a new bank doesn’t usually attract more than 200 people, but the new Midwest Bank will be play a key role in rebuilding Pilger’s downtown.

The small northeast Nebraska is slowly working to recover from a tornado that damaged more than three-quarters of Pilger and killed two people last June 16.

The Norfolk Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1BbJOlj) the bank announced plans for its replacement branch on Friday.

The new bank will be about a block away from the old building where employees rode out last June’s devastating storm inside the bank vault.

Pilger bank Market President Gene Willers says the new building will have a traditional facade outside of a modern interior.
