Lincoln College Neighborhood Sees Void as Food Store Closes

lincoln-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The recent closing of a grocery store in Lincoln has left many Nebraska Wesleyan University students without nearby access to fresh food.

The city’s University Place neighborhood is now considered a “food desert” as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Hy-Vee Mainstreet store shuttered in late January.

Many students at Nebraska Wesleyan don’t have cars, and roughly one-third of students have meal plans to eat in the school cafeteria. The nearest grocery store is now roughly 2 miles away.

University Place shopping center co-owner Chris Erickson says they’re working with Hy-Vee on a solution, but nothing is in development. Neighborhood leaders say they’ve reached out to other grocery chains and have asked Hy-Vee to release its lease.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man accused of throwing several Molotov cocktails last year has been given two years of probation.

Online court records say 28-year-old Daniel Walter was sentenced on Friday. He was given two years each on five counts of attempted possession of a destructive device, and the sentences will run at the same time. Prosecutors lowered the charges in return for Walter’s pleas of no contest.

Authorities say four of the incendiary devices were thrown in the Cripple Creek area in March 2013. A fifth was thrown in a different area. The bottles caused minor damage but did not turn into large fires.

AURORA, Neb. (AP) — The future of a 50 -year-old Aurora nursing facility is being considered by its board of trustees and the county board of commissioners.

Financial issues have led the boards to consider whether the county-owned Hamilton Manor in Aurora should continue being owned by the county, or move toward private or nonprofit ownership.

Commissioner Becky Richter says that when Hamilton Manor was the premier facility in the area, commissioners did not set aside funds for its future general upkeep. Over the years, the facility has seen its resident numbers dwindle from 107 to 45.

Most of the county-owned nursing homes in Nebraska are connected to hospitals and have more resources than Hamilton Manor, which is a stand-alone facility.

Deputy US Marshal Shot Suspect in Lincoln, Sheriff Says

us-marshalsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lancaster County sheriff says a deputy U.S. marshal fired the fatal shots at a suspect when he saw the man go for a gun in his car.

Thirty-four-year-old Tyson Hubbard, of Omaha, was shot around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said Monday that the deputy U.S. marshal was one of six members of the Metro Fugitive Task Force, which includes his deputies and Lincoln police officers.

Wagner says the deputy marshal saw the butt of a revolver under a car seat and saw Hubbard reach for it. Wagner says the deputy marshal yelled a warning to the other officers and then opened fire. Wagner says video surveillance from a nearby business backs up officers’ accounts of what happened.

Wagner didn’t release the deputy marshal’s name.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Despite improvements, a state center for developmentally disabled Nebraskans is again facing complaints that its employees are overworked.

A report to state legislators obtained by The Associated Press shows employee overtime at the Beatrice State Developmental Center soared in the last three months of 2014. Workers logged 19,220 hours of overtime, a 39 percent increase over the same period the previous year.

The increase has prompted some workers to complain and raised new concerns about turnover among the staff, which oversees residents with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Advocates for the center’s residents stress that conditions have vastly improved since 2009, when one resident died due to neglect.

The Department of Health and Human Services says it’s reviewing why overtime increased and is working hard to recruit and keep quality workers.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old Omaha man accused of severely beating two cats — one of which died — has been charged with a felony count of animal cruelty.

Nathaniel Gilreath was arrested early Friday morning on a warrant charging him with the count.

The Nebraska Humane Society says that on Feb. 12, it seized a cat after someone reported the animal had been beaten by Gilreath. A veterinarian determined that the cat had a broken jaw and chipped teeth and that it was thin and dehydrated, likely because its injuries made eating and drinking difficult.

The Humane Society said its investigation also showed Gilreath beat another cat that died of its injuries about a month ago.

If convicted, Gilreath could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
