La Vista police round up 7 loose horses in Omaha suburb

LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — Police in the Omaha suburb of La Vista recently called on their inner cowboys to help corral several loose horses near Interstate 80.

The horses belonged to a group of Wisconsin elk hunters who were on their way to Wyoming, with their horses in tow. The group stayed overnight Friday in La Vista, putting the horses up for the night at outdoor outfitter Cabela’s, which has a horse corral.

Officers were called around 2 a.m. Saturday for a report of seven horses on the loose on busy Giles Road and in the lot of a nearby movie theater. La Vista Capt. Bryan Waugh says the officers were able to safely round up all the horses within 30 minutes.

Arson blamed for Omaha dry cleaning business blast and fire

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an arsonist caused an explosion and fire at a dry cleaning business in Omaha.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency said in a news release Wednesday that investigators discovered evidence of tampering with the natural gas system in the Wardrobe Spa building. The blast and fire leveled the southwest Omaha building on Sunday afternoon.

No arrest has been reported.

The owner of the dry cleaning business was outside trimming some bushes when the explosion occurred, but he wasn’t hurt. His truck was parked between him and the business.

More than 150 to lose jobs at former Cabela’s operation

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say more than 150 people will lose their jobs at Cabela’s former credit card operation in Lincoln.

Capital One Financial notified the state last week of its plans to lay off 153 employees within two months. A notice is required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act whenever a company plans to lay off a large number of workers

As part of Cabela’s $5 billion sale to rival outdoor outfitter Bass Pro Shops last year, Cabela’s subsidiary World’s Foremost Bank was sold to Synovus Financial, which then sold the Cabela’s credit card portfolio to Capital One.

Capital One said the remaining Lincoln employees will focus on serving customers of the Cabela’s Club credit card.

Police: Omaha’s Burke High School on lockdown after stabbing

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A high school in central Omaha has been placed on lockdown after a reported stabbing.

Television station KETV says Omaha police confirmed that the Burke High School was put on lockdown around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after the report of a stabbing.

Police say there could be two victims and that a suspect has been arrested.

Police have not released any of the names of those involved, the medical conditions of any victims or any details of the incident.

Man accused of killing neighbor again ruled incompetent

MADISON, Neb. (AP) — A judge says a northeast Nebraska man is still not competent to stand trial on a murder charge.

Madison County District Court records say the judge issued the ruling Friday regarding 49-year-old Rodolfo Castenada-Morejon. He’s pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and use of a weapon in the slaying of 39-year-old Yosvanis Velazquez Gomez on Aug. 25, 2017, at a Norfolk apartment complex.

In May Castenada-Morejon was ruled incompetent for trial and sent to the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln for treatment. Another status hearing is scheduled for Jan. 4.

Man dies after pickup collides with semitrailer

EWING, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man died after his pickup truck struck a semitrailer in northern Nebraska.
The collision occurred around 5 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 275 just west of Ewing in Holt County. The Nebraska State Patrol says the westbound pickup crossed the center line into the path of the semi.

The pickup driver was identified as 23-year-old Emerson Schmaderer, who lived in O’Neill. The semitrailer driver was identified as 65-year-old August Waterman, of O’Neill. Authorities say he wasn’t injured.

Dry cleaning building collapses after fire in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investigators are working to determine why a building containing a dry cleaning business collapsed after an explosion and fire.

The Wardrobe Spa building near 168th and Harrison streets in southwest Omaha collapsed Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported, and the business was closed Sunday.

Brianna Rogers, who works in the nearby Paw Spa Pet Resort, says the whole building shook, and it sounded like firecrackers going off when the fire started.

Assistant Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman says the building was in flames and collapsed when firefighters arrived around midday.

Suspect in officer-involved shooting in La Vista charged

LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a suspect at the center of an officer-involved shooting in the Omaha suburb of La Vista has been released from the hospital and jailed.

La Vista police say Jonathan Grund was booked Friday into the Sarpy County Jail on suspicion of making terroristic threats, burglary, attempted assault, resisting arrest and weapons counts.

Police say the shooting occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, when La Vista officers responded a disturbance and encountered Grund, who had a handgun. Police say Grund took off running when ordered to drop the gun. Police say Grund later broke free from Officer Nick Jeanette’s grip and again produced the gun. Jeanette fired several shots, but no one was hit by gunfire.

Police say Grund forced his way into a home, where he fought with the homeowner and fired one shot. The homeowner managed to tackled Grund and held him until police arrived.

Jeanette is on paid administrative leave during the investigation, per department policy.

2-year-old dies while playing on pumpkin patch bounce pillow

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 2-year-old boy has died from injuries he sustained while playing on a bounce pillow near Lincoln that was lifted into the air by wind gusts.

The Lancaster County sheriff’s office says Caleb Acuna was taken off life support Thursday afternoon at a Lincoln hospital after suffering severe head trauma. The boy’s sister, 5-year-old Arra Acuna, was injured less severely.

Authorities say the siblings were on the jumping pillow around 6 p.m. Wednesday at JK’s Pumpkin Patch when strong winds tore it from its anchors.

Raymond Fire Safety Officer Nick Monnier says the bounce pillow was lifted more than 30 feet in the air. Arra Acuna was thrown about 30 feet, but Caleb was wrapped up inside the pillow and carried more than 100 feet.

2 kids hurt when bounce pillow takes flight at pumpkin patch

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Two young children are recovering from injuries they sustained when a bounce pillow took flight at a pumpkin patch near Lincoln.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that a 2-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister were on the jumping pillow around 6 p.m. Wednesday at JK’s Pumpkin Patch when strong winds tore it from its anchors.

Raymond Fire Safety Officer Nick Monnier says the bounce pillow was lifted more than 30 feet in the air by wind gusts. The girl was thrown about 30 feet, but the boy was wrapped up inside the pillow and carried more than 100 feet.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputy Scott Gaston says the boy’s injuries were more serious than the girl’s. She suffered a broken arm.
