Attorney: Landowners Still Have Options in Pipeline Dispute

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska opponents of the Keystone XL oil pipeline say they’ll continue to fight the project even though the state’s Supreme Court allowed its planned route to stand.

Omaha attorney Dave Domina said Monday that landowners on the route can challenge the project again once pipeline developer TransCanada uses eminent domain to get access to their property. Domina says such cases could take two to three years to resolve.

The court on Friday ruled against three landowners who tried to invalidate Nebraska’s pipeline-siting law. Four judges deemed the law unconstitutional, but the other three wouldn’t review the issue, saying the landowners lacked legal standing. Five were needed to overturn it.

A TransCanada spokesman says offers to landowners will expire this week, at which point the company can begin eminent domain proceedings.

NDORNORTH BEND, Neb. (AP) — Officials have made some adjustments to a proposed highway corridor in eastern Nebraska.

The Nebraska Department of Roads met recently with residents in Dodge County to discuss the proposed U.S. Highway 30 expressway alignment. A new proposal would allow more irrigation systems to keep operating.

Farmers and others met with officials in October and expressed concerns, including available land for irrigation.

Dodge County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bob Missel says landowners walked away from the Thursday meeting in North Bend feeling better about the project.

The nearly $140 million project involves converting highway between Schuyler and Fremont into a four-lane expressway. Construction is scheduled to begin between 2016 and 2019.

Plattsmouth Firefighters Blocked by Ice During House Fire

plattsmouth-nePLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters in Plattsmouth say ice formed by frigid weather blocked their access to water during a recent fire.

Plattsmouth Assistant Fire Chief Bill Dudek says a house fire Friday night required the volunteer firefighters to hook onto a fire hydrant. But when they tried to tie in, they noticed it was frozen with a block of ice.

Dudek says firefighters were able to find water in another nearby fire hydrant. They eventually contained the fire, which appears to have started in the house’s attic.

Five people in the house escaped safely with no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
