OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A large sinkhole opened up on a street near downtown Omaha this week, but no injuries or property damage was reported.

The sinkhole, which consumed the width of the street, was reported Thursday afternoon near 20th and Pierce streets.

Lesley Mosley, a resident in the area, says she heard a loud noise and thought it was a car accident.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

It’s at least the third large sinkhole in the area since mid-June. On June 22, one at 22nd Street and Saint Mary’s Avenue swallowed a woman’s car, who suffered minor injuries. In September, another sinkhole opened up nearby at 20th and Farnam streets because of a water main break. No injuries were reported from that incident.

Police: Lincoln Father Finds Burglars in Home

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police in Lincoln say at least one man has been arrested after a father interrupted a break-in at his home.

The father called police around 11:30 a.m. Friday after he went home to have lunch with his children and found his back door kicked in. Police say the would-be robbers were still inside the home — as were the children.

Police say the father chased one of the robbers and saw another get into a car and drive away. Police say officers were able to catch the man who fled on foot.

Officers also found evidence at the father’s home.

Police say no one was hurt during the robbery.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska Foundation says it will sell a Lincoln home that was purchased for the university’s president a year ago.

The foundation announced Friday that it was acting at the direction of the university’s Board of Regents. Foundation officials bought the 87-year-old home with private money in December 2013, at a cost of $750,000.

The house was intended to be renovated. According to Lancaster County records, its assessed value last year was $653,900.

Foundation officials say they’ll continue to work with the regents on housing arrangements. Former University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken left his position after he was named chancellor for the City University of New York in January 2014.

The home will be listed for sale this month. It’s located at 2810 South 27th Street.

Contempt Order Upheld for Nebraska Agency

DHHSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld a contempt of court order against the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services over its handling of a state ward’s foster placement.

The case involves the removal of a 12-year-old boy from a Norfolk group home where a Douglas County juvenile court had ordered him placed. But a state caseworker last year failed to inform the court, the county attorney or the boy’s court-ordered representative of the boy’s possible removal from the program over failed contract negotiations with the state.

The court found the department and a private child welfare agency with which it had contracted in contempt, and the department appealed, saying the judge violated the separation of powers doctrine.

On Friday, the high court disagreed and upheld the contempt order.

MORSE BLUFF, Neb. (AP) — The Morse Bluff woman dubbed the “Kolache Queen” has died at 88.

The Moser Memorial Chapel says Nadine Racek died Sunday at an Omaha hospital. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. George Catholic Church in Morse Bluff.

In 1951 Racek launched a baking business in her home. For 55 years she baked professionally for arts and crafts shows, farmers markets and private customers throughout the United States and internationally, earning many honors. In 2012 she was featured on NET’s “Nebraska Stories” program as the “Kolache Queen.” Czech in origin, a kolache is a fruit-filled pastry variously pronounced KOH’-lahtch or koh’-LAH’-chee.

The Rev. Brian Kane said he fondly remembers Racek for sending kolaches when he served as a chaplain in Iraq.

Omaha Baby Arrives 6 Minutes Into the New Year

storkOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Among Nebraska’s first arrivals in 2015 is a baby boy who was born six minutes into the new year in Omaha.

Andrea Paseka and Steve Beck drove to Methodist Women’s Hospital around 9 p.m. Wednesday after her water broke as they were getting ready to go to a friend’s house for a New Year’s Eve party. They weren’t expecting the child until Jan. 22.

Paseka says the 5-pound, 12-ounce boy is their first child and the first grandchild for her parents and Beck’s. As of Thursday, they haven’t given him his name. They left their list of names on a counter as they rushed out the door to head for the hospital.

Medical Marijuana a Challenge for Legal Pot States

Medical-Marijuana-leafSEATTLE (AP) — A year into the nation’s experiment with legal, taxed marijuana sales, Washington and Colorado find themselves wrestling not with the federal interference many feared, but with competition from medical marijuana or even outright black market sales.

In Washington, the black market has exploded since voters legalized marijuana in 2012, with legally dubious medical dispensaries opening and some pot delivery services brazenly advertising that they sell outside the legal system.

In Colorado, the number of patients on the medical marijuana registry went up, not down, since 2012, meaning more marijuana users there can avoid paying the higher taxes that recreational pot carries.

Officials in both states say they must do more to drive customers into the recreational stores. They’re looking at fixing the big tax differential between medical and recreational weed.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Charges will not be filed against a Nebraska prison official who was accused of withholding information that would have led to a mental health commitment of inmate Nikko Jenkins. Jenkins later pleaded guilty to killing four people within weeks of leaving custody.

Gage County Chief Deputy Attorney Rick Schreiner on Thursday released his decision not to pursue charges against Mark Weilage. Weilage is an assistant behavioral health administrator with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

Sen. Ernie Chambers accused Weilage of breaking state law by failing to divulge a diagnosis by a contracted psychiatrist that Jenkins was mentally ill and dangerous.

But Schreiner says Weilage’s actions were “consistent with the law as it applies to the mental health commitment” of Nebraska inmates.

Lincoln Firefighter Shocked Battling House Blaze

lincoln-fire-departmentLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A firefighter has been injured while battling a basement blaze at a Lincoln house.

Firetrucks were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. Thursday to a house about a mile south of the state Capitol. A family had gathered to share some pizza, but the smell of smoke interrupted the New Year’s Day meal. Two brothers found heavy smoke and flames in the basement.

Someone called 911, and the family members fled to safety.

Battalion Chief Jeanne Pashalek says the firefighter was to be hospitalized overnight for evaluation after apparently being shocked by a low-voltage source, such as an extension cord.
