Missing Man’s Body Recovered from Western Iowa Lake

police-lights-redCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a man who disappeared in a western Iowa lake after a weekend canoe accident.

The man’s body was found shortly after 11 a.m. Monday. He had been missing since the canoe he and another man were in capsized in Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs Sunday afternoon.

The second boater, 36-year-old Benjamin Ferguson, was able to swim to shore and call for help. He was taken to a Council Bluffs hospital for treatment of hypothermia, but he is expected to recover.

Rescuers searched the lake for several hours Sunday before suspending the effort at nightfall.

The name of the man who died wasn’t immediately released Monday.

Kansas Reports Tornado, Snow in Same Day

severe-weatherHARPER, Kan. (AP) — Kansas weather is often unpredictable but Sunday was a particularly odd day in the state.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings Sunday evening in Harper, Kingman and Reno counties in south-central Kansas. A tornado briefly touched down about five miles northeast of Harper but no injuries or serious damage was reported.

Later Sunday evening, snow began falling in Cheyenne County in far northwest Kansas.

Much of the rest of the state experienced rain and misty conditions.

Meteorologist Chris Jakub told The Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/12TOqMc ) the unusual weather occurred when warm and moist conditions met a strong upper-level system. He said the mix of weather was unusual for mid-December in Kansas.

New $11 Million Ice Rink in Lincoln Finally Moving Forward

Breslow Ice Center Lincoln Nebraska HuskersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Seven years after $7 million was donated for a new ice skating rink in Lincoln, the project is finally getting started.

City officials and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln broke ground on the project near the Haymarket Park baseball stadium Saturday.

The $11 million ice rink that former state auditor John Breslow donated money for will be shared by UNL and the city.

Breslow says he thinks the rink is something everyone will be able to be proud of.

The project was delayed while university and city officials focused on finishing the Pinnacle Bank arena for basketball and events.

The rink will be used for recreational skating and UNL intramural sports.

1 Man Missing After Canoe Capsizes on Western Iowa Lake

police-lights-redCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are searching a western Iowa lake for a man who was reported missing after a canoe capsized, and a second man was being treated at a hospital after swimming to shore.

Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Darren Budd says the canoe the two men were in capsized around 1:45 p.m. Sunday. The men were not immediately identified Sunday afternoon.

At the time of the accident, the water temperature was around 35 degrees, but one of the men managed to swim to shore and alert the park ranger.

The swimmer was taken to a Council Bluffs hospital for treatment.

Private Donation to Provide Elkhorn River Access

elkhorn-riverOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An eastern Nebraska natural resources district has announced a landowner’s donation that will help improve access to the Elkhorn River

Elkhorn resident Frank Krejci donated 18 acres of land in southwestern Douglas County to the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District.

The donation will be used to develop a fourth Elkhorn River access site for recreational users that will also help improve emergency access for first responders.

There is no timeline yet for construction. The new access point will add to others near Bennington, Waterloo and West Dodge Road.

Elderly Nebraska Man Gets Prison for 15th DUI

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An elderly Lincoln man has been sentenced to prison for his 15th drunken driving conviction and 23rd conviction of driving without a license.

A Lincoln judge sentenced 74-year-old Lee Edward Collins on Thursday to four to five years in prison on each count. Both sentences are to be served at the same time.

Deputy Lancaster County Nick Freeman argued that Collins is a danger to the public, noting that Collins not only continues to drive, but “to drink and drive.”

Deputies pulled Collins over on Feb. 1 in Lincoln because he was stopped in traffic at a green light. Police say he smelled of alcohol. At the time, Collins’ license was revoked on three separate offenses.

Lincoln Man Charged in Rape of 18-Year-Old Woman

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man accused of raping an 18-year-old woman in a west Lincoln home faces a felony charge in the case.

19-year-old Austin Phipps was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault.

In an arrest warrant charging Phipps, Lincoln police say Phipps went to the woman’s home, climbed on top of her as she lay in the bed and raped her as she struggled to free herself.

A dispatcher at the Lancaster County Jail said Saturday that Phipps was no longer at the jail. Phipps could not be reached Saturday at a Lincoln phone number listed for him.

Young Nebraska Boys Act Quickly to Save Grandpa

good-newsFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Two young Fremont brothers are being hailed as heroes for saving their grandfather’s life when he collapsed last month while babysitting them.

7-year-old James Fittje and his younger brother, 6-year-old Andrew Fittje, were alone at their home with Joe Belchal, otherwise known as “Grampy,” on Nov. 18 when their grandfather collapsed.

After unsuccessfully trying to get Belchal to respond, James called 911, giving the emergency dispatcher his name and address. James and his brother then went outside to flag down responding workers.

Police and emergency medical technicians were impressed by how calm and quickly the boys reacted in an emergency.

On Tuesday, the boys were honored with certificates of heroism issued by the Fremont City Council.

Replacement of Nebraska Tornado-Damaged School Discussed

pilger-tornado-3WISNER, Neb. (AP) — Residents jammed a school board meeting for a discussion on how and where to build a replacement for a middle school damaged by a tornado in northeast Nebraska.

On June 16 an EF4 twister destroyed or damaged more than half the town of Pilger (PIHL’-gur). The school had housed kindergarten through 12th grades until the local district merged with the nearby Wisner district in 1968.

Several people who spoke at the board meeting Wednesday night pleaded with the board to remember the promise made by the Wisner School Board in 1968 to always have a facility in Pilger.

The board made no decision and tabled further discussion until district officials know how much money to expect from insurance and disaster aid.

Kansas Man Guilty of Stealing Dying Woman’s Ring

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas jury has convicted one of three men accused of stealing a wedding ring and other items from a dying woman after she suffered a brain aneurysm at a Taco Bell drive-thru.

The Sedgwick County jury on Thursday convicted 20-year-old Wichita resident Daquantrius S. Johnson of aggravated burglary, robbery and misdemeanor theft. The panel deliberated about three hours.

Johnson faces a maximum prison term of more than 15 years when he is sentenced Jan. 29.

Forty-three-year-old Danielle Zimmerman died Dec. 30, one day after the fatal brain injury. She was unconscious and her pickup hit the drive-thru speaker box.

Another defendant was sentenced to 19 months in prison after pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft. A third still faces trial.
