Omaha Archdiocese Plans $2 Million School Marketing Plan

archdiosese-of-omahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Archdiocese has unveiled a $2 million plan to market Catholic schools in northeast Nebraska’s 23 counties.

The campaign theme will be “Awaken Greatness.” The campaign will focus on what officials say is the difference a Catholic education can make in students’ lives.

The archdiocese’s schools superintendent Patrick Slattery says, “We think we have a great story to tell.”

Archdiocese officials say test scores at the parochial schools consistently are higher than state and national averages and high school graduation rates are above 98 percent.

Enrollment across the archdiocese’s 17 high schools and 53 grade schools is just over 18,900 this year, down slightly from 19,100 last year.

Man Must Plead Guilty Again in Omaha Ponzi Scheme

judgeshipOMAHA,Neb. (AP) — A judge has ordered a man back to court this week for failing to utter the right words in pleading guilty to an Omaha-area Ponzi scheme.

Michael Kratville appeared in court Monday to plead guilty to wire fraud.

But U.S. District Judge Joseph Bataillon sent him home, saying that Kratville didn’t admit he violated the law. He told Kratville to come back Thursday.

Kratville is one of three people indicted for operating a Ponzi scheme that swindled 100 people out of $4 million. Prosecutors say he, Jon Arrington and Michael Welke operated two companies, guaranteeing large returns and low risk to investors when they were actually money losers who hid their losses.

Arrington and Welke have each pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.

Wynot Man Pleads Guilty in Sexual Assault Case

gavel-and-scaleSTANTON, Neb. (AP) — A registered sex offender in northeast Nebraska faces up to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old.

Stanton County officials say 41-year-old John Suing of Wynot entered the plea on Monday to a first-degree sexual assault of a minor charge.

Deputies say he assaulted the teenager near Woodland Park after they met on social media. They say Suing was on probation at the time.

Suing is scheduled to be sentenced in February.

Teen Dies After Fainting on School Bus in Omaha

school-busOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 16-year-old girl has died after fainting on a school bus in Omaha.

Omaha police say they responded to a radio call Tuesday morning on Interstate-480 at Dodge Street about a student who had fainted on a school bus.

Emergency personnel found Graciela Cabrera unconscious and not breathing. Officials performed CPR on her while she was transported to the CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center.

Graciela was pronounced dead at the hospital. Additional information has not been released.

Chief: Omaha Police to Purchase Body Cameras

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Police Department plans to purchase 30 to 50 body cameras for its officers early next year.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said it could cost about $180,000 for 50 cameras and a three-year contract. He says the department will use money from its seized-assets fund to pay for the equipment.

Schmaderer says a 12-camera pilot program over the summer went well. A deputy chief says officers felt suspects behaved better when they knew they were being recorded.

About 400 of the department’s 800 officers will be considered for the cameras. He says the department will likely purchase more if they are determined to be useful. Schmaderer says the department is researching what type of cameras to purchase.

Man Escapes Fire That Damages Beatrice House

House-FireBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A man has escaped from a fire that heavily damaged a house in southeast Nebraska.

The fire was reported about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in Beatrice. Fire Chief Brian Daake said firefighters suspect the blaze began on the east side of the house.

Daake says a state investigator found that the fire began in the chimney pipe of a wood pellet stove. The investigator determined that there was a blockage in the chimney pipe.

No injuries have been reported to the man who escaped. His name hasn’t been released.

Sarpy County Man Pleads Guilty in Sex Assault Case

sarpy-co.-sheriffGRETNA, Neb. (AP) — A Sarpy County man accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman has taken a plea deal with prosecutors.

32-year-old Kelley Hill pleaded guilty to a felony charge of terroristic threats on Monday. Two misdemeanor charges were dropped.

Two women tell deputies Hill approached and threatened them as they were walking home. They say he punched one woman in the face before attempting to sexually assault her.

Authorities say a nearby resident heard the women screaming and chased Hill off. Deputies found him hiding under a tree about six minutes later.

Kelley is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.

Chief: No Major Injuries in Nebraska House Fire

fireVALLEY, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters in eastern Nebraska say no one has been seriously injured in a fire that destroyed a rural home.

Waterloo Fire Chief Travis Harlow says the homeowner and his son escaped from the home near Valley on Monday after the flames broke out.

Harlow says it took firefighters from six departments about 35 minutes to contain the flames. He says getting water to the home was problematic because the closest hydrant was 5 miles away.

Harlow says the homeowner inhaled smoke while grabbing clothes and photos before leaving. The man declined medical treatment.

County records show the home was valued at about $360,000.

The cause of the fire is unclear.

Nebraska Family Helps Catch Man on Thanksgiving

state-patrol-logoHENDERSON, Neb. (AP) — One Nebraska family spent part of their Thanksgiving helping authorities apprehend a 21-year-old man who had fled into the small town of Henderson to avoid a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said the incident began Thursday morning when a black motorcycle was going 82 mph in a 75 mph zone.

Collins says the motorcycle driver refused to stop and fled into Henderson.

Matt Siebert says his family noticed the influx of state troopers who spent about an hour searching for the driver and towed away his abandoned motorcycle.

Later, Siebert and his 17-year-old son spotted a man who appeared to be looking for the motorcycle before running. Siebert and his son followed and eventually helped talk the man into surrendering.

Man Pleads No Contest in Fatal Lincoln Shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old man has pleaded no contest to charges in connection to a fatal shooting in Lincoln.

Kashius Haynes, of Jonestown, Mississippi, entered the plea Monday to charges of manslaughter and use of a firearm to commit a felony. A plea deal amended a second-degree murder charge.

Haynes was accused of shooting Nathaniel Morton in March, after witnesses say there was a sudden quarrel between the men. Morton was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities say Haynes killed Morton in a fight over a $20 dice bet. He faces six to 70 years in prison when he is sentenced in March.
