LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A senator-elect says he’ll introduce legislation to study how a tuition payback program catching on in other states might work in Nebraska.

The program known as Pay It Forward allows students to enroll in college without paying tuition costs up front. Instead, they agree to pay back a fixed percentage of their future income over at least 20 years.

The Economic Opportunity Institute says at least 25 states introduced some kind of Pay It Forward legislation in 2013 and 2014.

Earlier this month, Nebraska state Sen.-elect Adam Morfeld won election to the Legislature to represent northeast Lincoln. The 29-year-old attorney says in January, he’ll introduce the legislation to study the program.

NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A Norfolk man has again been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison after he was convicted of murder for the second time.

The 24-year-old Tryce was resentenced Friday. His original sentence was imposed in 2013, but his conviction was overturned by the Nebraska Supreme Court in July of that year.

Protest Group Protests Bill for Nebraska Hearing

nebraska-liquor-control-comLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Those who protested a Lincoln movie theater’s application for a liquor license this year are now protesting the bill they’ve received to cover the cost of the protest hearing.

Deb Hicks and Cathy Heimer of Lincoln were among six people who testified in opposition to the theater’s liquor license request in April. That hearing was triggered by the group’s protest letters.

About a month later, the commission sent them notice that they needed to pay a $25 fee.

Hicks and Heimer say they shouldn’t have to pay to voice their opinion on a community issue. But Commission Executive Director Hobert Rupe says state law allows for billing protesters for the cost of the hearing if they are unsuccessful in getting a license denied.
