LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The 31-year-old son of a Nebraska federal judge has been charged with sexual assaulting a woman.

Jonathan Camp, of Lincoln, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging him with first-degree sexual assault.

Camp is the son of Chief U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp and Lincoln City Councilman Jon Camp.

An arrest affidavit says the woman told police that Camp drugged her the night of Sept. 8 at a Lincoln home. She said she later awoke to Camp assaulting her.

Camp, who was set to appear in court on the charge Thursday, was being held in the Lancaster County Jail and could not be reached for comment. His attorney, Sean Reagan of Lincoln, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The Nebraska Humane Society says animal control officers were sent to a house in south-central Omaha on Friday after residents reported that the bat had been captured inside their home. The residents were worried about whether their 8-month-old baby was exposed to the possibly rabid animal.

Tests confirmed the bat was rabid, so the child’s parents were encouraged to contact a physician.

The Nebraska Health and Human Services Department says that as of Wednesday, 17 rabid animals have been reported in the state this year, including eight rabid bats.

US Supreme Court to Hear Nebraska Case

supreme-courtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska case challenging how long officers can hold drivers during traffic stops will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will listen to oral arguments next year. Dennys Rodriguez is challenging his drug conviction, saying police violated his right against unreasonable search and seizure.

Court records show Rodriguez was pulled over in 2012 by a Valley officer after he swerved on the road. He was given a written traffic warning.

The officer asked if he could walk his drug dog around Rodriguez’s vehicle, and Rodriguez declined.

Rodriguez was asked to step out of his car while the officer called for backup. The dog indicated the presence of drugs after another officer arrived. They searched his vehicle and found a bag of meth.

Grand Island Paying for Unwanted Paint Jobs

city-of-grand-islandGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Grand Island has received nearly 50 claims from people who say their vehicles got unwanted paint jobs from city maintenance workers.

Street superintendent Shannon Callahan says the problem arose as workers spruced up the Eddy Street underpass for Saturday’s Harvest of Harmony Parade. Callahan says the workers had blocked off a lane so spray equipment could be used to give metal railings a coat of silver paint, but a wind arose and spread some of the paint onto passing vehicles and parked cars nearby.

As of Monday morning, the city had received 46 claims totaling nearly $13,000.

Callahan says the workers are using paint brushes to finish the job.
