Deputy: $100,000 Seized in Nebraska Traffic Stop

lancaster-county-sheriffLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies say they have seized more than $100,000 of suspected drug money that was vacuum-sealed and hidden in a vehicle’s spare tire.

The money was seized last month from 22-year-old Ariana Moran of Portland, Oregon. Prosecutors later charged her with possession of money during a drug violation and aiding the consummation of a felony.

Deputy Sheriff James Baird Jr. says Moran gave him permission to search her vehicle after he gave her a warning for following another vehicle too closely on Interstate 80.

Baird says he found the cash in seven packages taped inside the tire. He says Moran denied knowing anything about the money. No drugs were found.

Moran was released on $75,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately available if she has an attorney.

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police are investigating the death of a 32-year-old man who died while in their custody.

Officer Kevin Wiese says Michael Harris died Monday at Immanuel Hospital but the cause is unclear.

Employees at an Omaha liquor store say they fought with Harris on Sept. 19 because he looked like he was going to fight another customer. They called police and said he bit one of the employees.

Wiese described Harris as uncooperative and erratic. He says Harris injured himself and damaged the interior of the police car on the way to the hospital but didn’t say how he was hurt.

Autopsy results are pending.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The American video journalist being treated for Ebola in Nebraska is receiving the same experimental drug being used to treat a patient in Dallas.

Nebraska Medical Center Dr. Phil Smith said Tuesday that 33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo (ah-SHOH’-kuh MUK’-poh) is receiving brincidofovir, an oral medication developed to fight several other viruses.

Doctors sought federal permission to use the drug for Mukpo. It’s also being used in Dallas to treat Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S.

The 33-year-old Mukpo was diagnosed in Africa and flown to the Omaha hospital, which houses a specialized isolation unit to treat infectious diseases. His father says Mukpo is, as expected, experiencing some vomiting and diarrhea.

American aid worker Dr. Rick Sacra also was treated for Ebola at the Nebraska hospital.

Feds Probing UNL Student’s Sex Assault Report

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Federal investigators are looking into how officials at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln handled a student’s report in May that she’d been raped by a faculty member.

The university was notified Monday about the U.S. Department of Education’s Title IX investigation. In 2011 the department warned schools of their legal responsibilities, including the need for immediate investigations that don’t rely on criminal cases to move forward. Lincoln police spokeswoman Katie Flood said Tuesday that the case is still being investigated. No names have been released.

University officials deny any wrongdoing, saying they began an investigation two days after learning about the student’s report of an incident at an off-campus apartment. Officials also say the faculty member is no longer employed by the university.

Omaha, Douglas County to Share Crime Lab Services

douglas-county-sheriffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of Omaha and Douglas County will share some crime lab services under a new agreement.

The Omaha City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve an agreement supported by Mayor Jean Stothert. It has already been approved by the Douglas County Board and will go into effect on Jan. 1.

The agreement means the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will analyze drug samples, blood-alcohol tests and crime-scene evidence for itself and the Omaha Police Department. Police will handle ballistics tests for both agencies.

The sheriff’s office will hire two new chemists. A sheriff’s deputy will be assigned to the police department’s electronics unit, and crime-scene technicians from one agency can respond to calls from the other agency.
