Colorado Man Arrested After 163-Mile Wyoming Chase

wyoming-highway-patrolELK MOUNTAIN, Wyo. (AP) — A Colorado man is under arrest after leading authorities on a 163-mile chase in a stolen car in Wyoming.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says 25-year-old Martin Anderson of Peyton, Colorado, along with a teenage boy were taken into custody Tuesday after a fourth round of stop sticks finally stopped the 2013 Dodge Charger he was driving near Elk Mountain, Wyoming.

Sheriff’s deputies and police officers first tried to the stop the car, reported stolen from Colorado Springs on July 30, in Riverton. Speeds reached up to 140 mph during the chase. Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. David Wagener says it was suspended twice — when Anderson swerved at multiple troopers and into oncoming traffic north of Rawlins and again when he entered the city limits.

No one was injured.

Flood Insurance Workshops Offered in Pilger

pilger-tornado-3PILGER, Neb. (AP) — Flood insurance workshops will be held this week for residents of the small northeast Nebraska city of Pilger who want to rebuild after a June tornado destroyed much of the town.

Flooding rules have complicated rebuilding plans for many Pilger residents because new homes built in the town can’t have basements.

Pilger has been in a flood plain since 2004, so every resident who wanted to rebuild there will have to make sure the lowest level of their home is at least one foot above the likely flood level, which is sometimes referred to as a 100-year flood.

One workshop will be held Wednesday evening at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pilger. The workshop will be repeated at the church Saturday morning at 10.

US Safety Agency Offers Online Recall Check

NHTSADETROIT (AP) — The U.S. government is offering a free online service for drivers to find out if their vehicles have been recalled but not repaired.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the service started Wednesday on its website, www.safercar.gov.

Drivers can key in their vehicle identification number to get the results. The number can be found on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver’s door post near the latch.

Also starting Wednesday, automakers must keep the same data on their own websites, and they have to update it at least once per week.

The safety agency’s site will show data if there’s an open recall, or it will tell drivers there are none.

The agency also says used-car buyers can check for unrepaired vehicles before they make a purchase.

Columbus Still Trying to Save Old Train Depot

Union-PacificCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The city is still looking for private parties willing to spend $750,000 or more to move and save Columbus’ old Union Pacific depot.

City officials discussed at Monday night’s council meeting the railroad’s plan to tear down the depot after its employees move into a new building.

City administrator Joe Mangiamelli says the city has leased land the depot could be moved to, if someone or a group were to come forward with the money.

Mayor Mike Moser says he wouldn’t favor spending city funds on the project, a stance echoed by Councilman Rich Jablonski, who said, “We can’t save everything.”

The building dates back to 1887.

Nebraska Pardons Board Rejects a Sister’s Plea

dave-heinemanLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Board of Pardons has refused to grant a hearing to a man who’s been imprisoned since 1968 for killing two people.

The board last week rejected pleas from the sister of Brian Adams. Vivian Adams Dennison shared her family’s story with the three board members last week as she asked them to grant her 65-year-old brother a commutation hearing.

She said their father had beaten her brother, who had been “taught his entire existence that he was worthless.” Brian Adams was convicted of killing gas station attendants in separate crimes.

Gov. Dave Heineman, sitting as a member of the board, told Dennison that the judge gave Adams the life sentences for a purpose.
