Man Driving Stolen UNL Car Caught in Missouri

police-lights-redMARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A man driving a car allegedly stolen from the University of Nebraska was arrested after a chase involving several jurisdictions in northwest Missouri.

Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood says the man was caught after a chase that began Monday morning in Tarkio and ended on the south edge of Maryville.

Tarkio police started the chase after learning the white Chevrolet pickup the man was driving apparently was stolen in Nebraska.

Officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office and Maryville public safety continued the chase, which went around the outskirts of Maryville until the suspect was forced off the road by a patrol officer. The suspect, whose name was not released, was not seriously injured and was arrested.

Officials: Nebraska Man Exposed Himself to Children

douglas-county-sheriffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man has been arrested in Nebraska on suspicion of exposing himself to three girls.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Michael Chase was arrested Friday on three counts of felony child abuse. Court records do not list an attorney.

Chase is accused of exposing himself to three girls between the ages of 12 and 13 on three separate occasions. Additional information was not released.

Authorities also say Chase told investigators after a traffic stop Friday that he had exposed himself about 80 times since the fall of 2013.

Chase also faces a public indecency charge in connection to an incident in June.

Authorities ID Woman Killed in Lincoln Car Crash

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a woman killed in a one-vehicle rollover crash in Lincoln.

Lincoln police say 21-year-old Shanna R. Rurup was a passenger Sunday night in a car driven by 20-year-old Cameron Beattie. At some point the vehicle went off the road, hit a guardrail and rolled.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood said Rurup was not wearing a seat belt.

Rurup died at the scene. Beattie was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Child, 8, Falls to Death in Yellowstone Canyon

national-park-serviceYELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — An 8-year-old girl has died after falling about 550 feet while hiking in Yellowstone National Park.

The National Park Service says the accident occurred Sunday morning in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

It identified the victim as Zahra Allahyari (ZEHR’-ah AHL’-lah-yahr-ee) of Poway, California.

According to the Park Service, the girl and members of her family were hiking down a trail on the north side of the canyon to the Brink of the Lower Falls overlook. The agency says the child apparently stepped off the trail and lost her footing.

Her body was retrieved around noon Sunday.

The incident remains under investigation.

Judge: Lincoln Man Not Competent to Stand Trial in Wife’s Death

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge says a Lincoln man accused of killing his wife and decapitating her head is not competent to stand trial, but he could be in the future.

Lancaster County District Judge Paul Merritt Jr. made the ruling Monday about 41-year-old Kent Burklund.

Merritt says there is a substantial likelihood that Burklund’s competency can be restored. He was ordered to the Lincoln Regional Center for medical tests.

Merritt said he would review the case in February, or sooner depending on Burklund’s treatment.

Burklund is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Bettina Burklund. She was found dead in the couple’s home in April.

Teen Hiker Rescued from Crevice in Colorado

ambulance-lightsFORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — A hiker is recovering after falling and spending about three hours in a crevice near a popular hiking trail in northern Colorado.

More than 40 people worked to pull the 16-year-old girl from the crevice on Horsetooth Rock on Monday. They then took turns carrying her stretcher to a waiting medical helicopter.

Poudre Fire spokesman Chris Wolf says the teen broke her ankle in the fall, which happened around 7:30 a.m. She remained conscious and was able to talk to the rescuers.

The 2.5-mile trail is moderately difficult and requires some scrambling over rocks at the top.

Man Injured in Omaha Park Shooting

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say they’ve arrested a man who shot and critically injured a man in a park.

Officer Michael Pecha says 23-year-old Carl Johnson Jr. was arrested Sunday for the Saturday shooting at Orchard Park. He is charged with first-degree felony assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony in the shooting of 23-year-old Josh Hintz.

Police say Hintz was shot during an argument involving a large group of people. They say Hintz was critically injured and taken to Creighton University Medical Center.

A hospital spokesman told the Omaha World-Herald Sunday that no information about Hintz’s condition was being released.

Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney for Johnson.

Lincoln Bridge Provides Links to Famous Nebraskans

pinnacle-bank-arenaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The pedestrian bridge linking the Pinnacle Bank Arena to nearby parking lots reminds people they’re in Lincoln and provides links to famous Nebraskans.

The word Lincoln is spelled out in big block letters on both sides of the bridge, which is lit up at night. The two-block-long walkway has 14 aluminum panels on its sides, offering pedestrians a chance to see a collection of virtues and values linked to quotes from famous Americans with Nebraska ties. Among those listed is President Gerald Ford, who was born in Omaha, and billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

The group picking the virtues and quotes made sure there was diversity in the people selected. Copyright issues were checked and permission for use was obtained from various foundations and estates.

Man Pleads Not Guilty to Lincoln Park Slaying

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 30-year-old man has pleaded not guilty after being found competent to stand trial in a Lincoln slaying.

LaRon Branch made his pleas Friday in Lancaster County District Court. He’s charged with second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon.

In May a judge had ordered Branch to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see whether he is fit to stand trial in the slaying of Jarvis Long. Long was stabbed to death on Jan. 16 in Lincoln’s Peter Pan Park.

Police: 2 Lincoln Pizza Delivery Drivers Robbed

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska police say they’re investigating two pizza delivery robberies in as many days after teenagers stole two pizzas, cinnamon sticks, cash and a cellphone.

The Lincoln Police Department says a Topper’s Pizza delivery man was robbed Saturday night. He tells police that three male teenagers were hiding in the bushes near a home. He says one pointed a gun at him and they fled on foot after the robbery.

Police say a Pizza Hut delivery woman was robbed at gunpoint Friday night by three male teenagers a few blocks away from the other location. They say the robberies are similar but they’re not sure whether the two are related.

Police say they’re searching for the teens.
