Missouri Governor Sends Guard, Lifts Curfew

missouri-highway-patrolFERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is lifting a curfew while ordering the National Guard to help restore order in a St. Louis suburb that has seen sometimes violent protests since the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager.

Nixon deployed the Guard Monday following an overnight clash between armored police and what he called “a violent criminal element intent upon terrorizing the community.”

The unrest followed the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, who is white.

The neighborhood has been under a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew the past two days, after Nixon declared a state of emergency. The governor says in a statement that the curfew is now lifted.

He says the Guard will be under the direction of the state Highway Patrol.

Peek Into Brain Shows How Kids Learn Math Skills

brainWASHINGTON (AP) — Sometime in elementary school, you quit counting your fingers and just know the answer.

Now, scientists have put youngsters into brain scanners to find out why, and watched how the brain reorganizes itself as kids learn math.

The take-home advice: drilling your kids on simple addition and multiplication may pay off.

Healthy children start making that switch between counting to what’s called fact retrieval when they’re 8 years old to 9 years old, when they’re still working on fundamental addition and subtraction.

How well kids make that shift to memory-based problem-solving is known to predict their ultimate math achievement.

Thurston County Officials Debate Replacing Aging Jail

thurston-county-sheriffPENDER, Neb. (AP) — Thurston County’s jail needs to be replaced after nearly 100 years of use, but county officials are having trouble agreeing on where it should be built and how to pay for it.

The northeast Nebraska county is considering asking voters to approve a $7.5 million bond issue in November for a new 48-bed jail.

The current jail has 25 beds in three large cells, so there isn’t any way to separate inmates by the seriousness of their crimes. Sheriff Shelly Perez says the jail isn’t all that secure either.

A consultant recommends building a new jail in Pender, but some county board members want to build it 13 miles away in Walthill because that site is supported by the area’s Omaha and Winnebago tribes.
