LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska inmate has been given more prison time for the death of a Lincoln woman who was in a vehicle struck by the state prison van he was driving.

Thirty-six-year-old Jeremy Dobbe had pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the death of 47-year-old Joyce Meeks, who was killed June 25, 2013, in Lincoln. On Monday Dobbe was sentenced to 18 to 20 more years in prison.

Dobbe was seen speeding and swerving before he struck Meeks’ minivan. Dobbe was transporting inmates as part of a state work-release program. Prison records say Dobbe already was serving five to seven years for selling meth, threatening people and making criminal mischief.

Study of Nebraska Nuclear Flood Risks Narrowed

ft-calhoun-nuclear-plantOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Regulators have told the utilities that own Nebraska’s two nuclear power plants not to worry about some unlikely ways upstream dams might fail even though they are studying those flood risks.

The utilities are re-examining flood threats at their nuclear plants that sit on the Missouri River as part of an industrywide review of unlikely safety threats after the 2011 Japanese meltdowns.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission told the utilities this month they didn’t need to consider two of the five dam failure scenarios experts developed.

NRC officials didn’t immediately respond to questions about the decision.

Independent expert David Lochbaum with the nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists says it appears regulators decided the flooding scenarios were similar enough that the utilities don’t need to prepare for all of them.

Victim of Saunders County Crash Identified

fatal-accidentCEDAR BLUFFS, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a man who was fatally injured in a Saunders County crash.

He was identified as 45-year-old Terrance Lessig, of Fremont.

The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred around 8 p.m. Friday at the intersection of two county roads near Cedar Bluffs. Investigators say Lessig’s pickup didn’t halt at the intersection stop sign. It left the roadway and ended up in a ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Winds Damage Beatrice’s Famous Silver Maple

silver-maple-beatriceBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — High winds have damaged the state champion silver maple tree in the southeast Nebraska city of Beatrice.

Part of the tree landed early Sunday morning on a sign the city bought to describe the tree, which is scientifically known as an Acer saccharinum.

The tree is believed to be the largest silver maple in the state. The Nebraska Forest Service website says that when measured in 2002, the tree had a circumference of more than 22 feet, was 100 feet tall and had a spread of 118 feet. It’s grown since.

The tree sits in Chautauqua Park on the south side of Beatrice.

Flooding Forces Closure of Nebraska Courthouse

floodzoneDAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — The Dakota County Courthouse in Dakota City will be closed during cleanup from the weekend storms.

Courthouse employees in the older part of the building were being advised to wear work attire with rubber footwear for cleanup on Monday. The new addition apparently suffered no leaks or damage.

Heavy storms Saturday night and early Sunday drenched the area. Sioux City, Iowa, for example received 6.15 inches of rain from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.

Waterloo Firefighters Rescue 7 Tubers from River

firedptWATERLOO, Neb. (AP) — Waterloo firefighters have rescued seven tubers from a sandbar in the rising Elkhorn River.

Firefighters in their rescue boat on Sunday found the group of tubers on a sandbar between Waterloo and King Lake. The tubers had stopped on the sandbar to eat lunch.

Authorities say the river rose 3 feet in just four hours, thanks to rain upriver. The fast current and floating debris raised the danger to the tubers.

No injuries have been reported.

Omaha Police: Man Hit in Traffic Fleeing Scene of Accident

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police say a man hit by a car as he ran across two lanes of interstate traffic was fleeing the scene of an earlier crash.

Police say 29-year-old Anastacio Calderon-Colesio was hit by a car on U.S. Highway 75 late Friday night. He was taken to an Omaha hospital with serious injuries, including a broken arm.

Police say Calderon-Colesio had been involved in an unrelated crash that damaged property and was fleeing on foot — jumping over a median barrier — when he was hit.

Investigators believe Calderon-Colesio was drunk at the time of the crash and when he was hit by the car. Police say they will be seeking a DUI arrest warrant for him.

Casey Kasem, King of the Top 40 Countdown Dead

casey-kasemLOS ANGELES (AP) — Casey Kasem, the smooth-voiced radio broadcaster who became the king of the top 40 countdown, has died at age 82.

Danny Deraney, publicist for Kasem’s daughter, Kerri, says Kasem died Sunday morning.

Kasem’s “American Top 40” began on July 4, 1970, in Los Angeles. The No. 1 song on his list then was “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” by Three Dog Night.

The show continued in varying forms — and for varying syndicators — until his retirement in 2009. In his signoff, he would tell viewers: “And don’t forget: keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”

Many Nebraskans Still Repairing Hail Damage

hailSTANTON, Neb. (AP) — The severe thunderstorms that spawned large hail and strong winds earlier this month left a lasting mark on many Nebraska communities.

Aaron Volkman said it will take weeks or even months to repair all the damage to his rural home near Stanton.

The June 3 storms also caused significant hail damage in Blair, Fort Calhoun, Uehling and Craig, Nebraska, and in the western Iowa town of Missouri Valley.

The hail shredded the siding on the north and west sides of Volkman’s home. Several windows were shattered and the roof had holes in it.

Volkman says a contractor estimated that the repairs will cost $54,000 although insurance will cover the bill.

New Ice Rink in Lincoln Likely to Be Approved Soon

city-of-lincolnLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln officials are ready to sign off on new ice skating rink seven years after getting a $7 million donation for the project.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the project by the end of June. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved its role in the project in May.

Once the city approves the agreement, construction can begin. University officials hope ice rink will be ready by the fall of 2015.

Former state auditor John Breslow first announced his intention to donate $7 million for the ice rink in 2007. But the project languished while university and city officials focused on finishing the Pinnacle Bank arena for basketball and events.
