Creighton Appeals Decision Favoring Deaf Medical Student

creighton-univOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton University is appealing a federal judge’s ruling requiring it to provide a deaf student with special equipment and interpreters to allow him to finish his last two years of medical school.

The judge ruled in December that Creighton University’s medical school must accommodate Michael Argenyi’s (ar-GEN’-ee) disability. Last month, the judge ordered the Omaha university to pay nearly $500,000 in Argenyi’s legal fees.

Argenyi was accepted to Creighton’s medical school in 2008 after disclosing that he was hearing-impaired and requesting accommodations for his disability to allow him to follow lectures and communicate with patients.

He sued in 2009, after leaving the school when the university refused his requests for interpreters — even though he offered to pay for the interpreters himself.

Authorities Offer Reward in Omaha Girl’s Shooting

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are offering a $10,000 cash reward for information connected to the shooting of a 6-year-old Omaha girl.

Police will increase patrol presence to try to curb any retaliation violence. No arrests have been made.

Taelor, who was shot on her birthday, was reported in good condition late Thursday at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center.

Plan to Establish Marijuana Banks Becomes Law

Colorado-MarijuanaDENVER (AP) — Gov. John Hickenlooper has signed legislation to try to establish the world’s first financial system for the largely cash-only marijuana industry.

The bill signed Friday morning seeks to form a network of uninsured cooperatives designed to give pot businesses a way to access basic banking services.

Banks that fear violating federal law do not allow marijuana businesses access to basic financial services. That has led to fears that the burgeoning marijuana industry can be a target for robberies.

Colorado became the first state to allow recreational pot sales on Jan. 1.

The legislation would allow pot businesses to pool money in cooperatives. However, that will only happen with the blessing of the U.S. Federal Reserve. That has prompted some to argue the legislation could be only symbolic.

Report Suggest Grand Island has Education Problem

grand-island-public-schoolsGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — An economic development official says a report on what’s good and bad about Grand Island shows the south-central Nebraska city must address its relatively low adult education levels.

President Randy Gard of the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corp. said Thursday that Grand Island adults have far lower educational levels than those in other communities its size. Gard also says the graduation rate and academic proficiency of Grand Island Public Schools students are below state averages.

Gard says those factors “can kick you out of the running (for jobs) before you even know you were in the running.”

The report stems from the Grow Grand Island business development survey being conducted by MarketStreet consultants.

At Leaset 3 Tornadoes Confirmed in Nebraska Tuesday

NOAA-NWS6HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — The thunderstorms that caused significant damage in Nebraska this week generated at least three tornadoes, but much of the damage was caused by the combination of large hail and strong winds.

The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes when it surveyed the damage Tuesday’s storms left behind.

The weather service said Thursday that tornadoes briefly touched down in eastern Nebraska near Elyria, near Greeley and near Hampton.

The tornadoes near Elyria and Greeley happened in the late afternoon of Tuesday and were witnessed by storm spotters.

The tornado near Hampton struck around 10:30 p.m., so it couldn’t be seen in the dark. That was the strongest of the three tornadoes with winds up to 110 mph.
