Authorities: 3 Lincoln Women Conned out of $8,400

MAG_SCAMLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are warning Lincoln residents to be cautious of salespeople who approach their homes following three instances of women being conned out of thousands of dollars.

Three women were conned out of a total of $8,400 by a man posing as a magazine salesman between April 30 and May 19.

Officer Katie Flood says the women, ages 46 to 84, bought subscriptions and wrote checks for $22, $24 and $46. The checks were later cashed for about $2,800 each.

Flood says the man told the women he was from Omaha and wanted to turn his life around. She says the man told one woman her subscription money would go to a Boys & Girls Club facility.

Flood says investigators haven’t yet arrested any suspects.

Omaha Slaying Suspect Extradited from Missouri

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man arrested in Missouri on suspicion of killing a woman in Omaha has been extradited to Nebraska.

Omaha police say 42-year-old Anthony Burries was booked Wednesday into the Douglas County Correctional Center. He was arrested Monday night by officers in Odessa, Missouri.

Burries is charged in a warrant with first-degree murder. He’s accused of killing 38-year-old Tina Hoult, with whom he’d had a relationship. Her body was found Sunday morning in her Omaha apartment after officers were sent to check on her well-being.

Court records say Burries has a prison record for theft and firearms violations and for domestic abuse in assaulting Hoult in December 2012.

Nebraska Gov. Heineman Looking at NU Presidency

dave-heinemanLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman says he is looking seriously at applying for the presidency of the University of Nebraska.

Heineman made the comments Monday during his weekly call-in show on Lincoln radio station KFOR (http://bit.ly/1k5INAy ).

The position came open in April with the departure of university President J.B. Milliken, who left to become chancellor of the City University of New York. Heineman is leaving the governor’s office in January because of term limits.

A search committee and outside firm are working with the university’s Board of Regents to conduct a national search to replace Milliken.

Heineman’s remarks came in response to a caller who encouraged him to apply. He previously has deflected questions about whether he’s interested in the job, saying he wanted to focus on his work as governor.

eric-henryCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 31-year-old man has been given life in prison for stabbing to death a 51-year-old man in Columbus.

But Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Dave Coleman says it’s not clear how the three girls, who ranged in age from 3 years to 2 months old, were killed.

Detectives are completing their investigation and clearing out of the scene on Wednesday morning, more than 12 hours after the children’s grandmother called them to the home in the unincorporated area near Torrance.

EBay Asks Users to Change Password after Breach

EBAYSAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — E-commerce site eBay is asking users to change their password after a cyberattack compromised a database containing encrypted passwords.

The company says there is no evidence of any unauthorized activity and there is no evidence any financial or credit card information was stolen.

EBay says its investigation is active and it can’t comment on the specific number of accounts affected, but says the number could be large.

Cyberattackers stole a small number of employee log-in credentials that gave them access to eBay’s corporate network. The San Jose, California-based company is working with law enforcement to investigate the attack.

The database was hacked sometime between late February and early March.

EBay owns electronic payment service PayPal, but eBay says there is no evidence PayPal information was hacked.

Nebraskan who Taped Girls in Shower is Pardoned

Randy WeichLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A state board has pardoned a 25-year-old Nebraska man who videotaped girls using a shower at his house when he was 14.

Randy Weich was pardoned on Tuesday, and his name will be removed from the state’s sex offender registry.

In 2003 he and two teenage buddies made a secret video of two or three female classmates using a shower at his mother’s house in Pierce. The girls learned of the tape’s existence three years later and notified police.

In August 2007 he was convicted as an adult on a charge of creating child pornography and one of possessing child pornography. His sentence included jail time and 18 months of probation. The two other boys were not charged.

More than 90 letters supporting Weich were submitted to the Pardons Board.

Nebraska Man who Killed Cat gets probation

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln resident who used a hatchet to kill a cat has been given probation for animal cruelty and must write an essay.

The 18-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday. The 250-word essay must cover the hunting and trapping laws of Nebraska and South Dakota, where his father lives.

In November police received a report about a pool of blood in a driveway. Officers twice talked to the man, who lived nearby and was 17 at the time. During the second interview he said the blood belonged to a cat that got caught in a squirrel trap. He couldn’t free the cat’s leg, so he struck the animal with a hatchet and disposed of it.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

GM Adds 218,000 Subcompacts to Growing Recall List

general-motorsDETROIT (AP) — General Motors is adding 218,000 subcompact cars to its growing list of recalled vehicles.

The new recall covers certain Chevrolet Aveo cars from the 2004 through 2008 model years. GM says the daytime running light module in the dashboard center stack can overheat, melt and cause fires.

The recall posted Wednesday on a U.S. government website is GM’s 30th this year. It brings the total number of vehicles recalled by the company since January to 13.8 million, breaking its own annual record.

Recall documents didn’t say if the problem has caused any fires or injuries. GM says it will provide a plan to fix the problem as soon as possible.

The high number of recalls is fallout from a deadly ignition switch problem that is responsible for at least 13 deaths.

2 Accused of Hacking Nebraska Site Plead Guilty

uofnhackerpicLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two men accused of conspiring to hack into the computer systems of the Navy have each pleaded guilty in an Oklahoma federal court.

Sentencing is set Aug. 27 for 27-year-old Nicholas Paul Knight of Chantilly, Virginia, and 20-year-old Daniel Trenton Krueger of Dix, Illinois. Federal prosecutors said Tuesday the men could each face up to five years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say the men hacked a system that stores personal information for 220,000 service members. The two also accused of hacking more than 30 other websites for public and private organizations, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The case was prosecuted in Tulsa because the Navy servers that were hacked are situated there.
