(AP) — A 21-year-old Lincoln man is facing charges after turning himself in to police in connection with a fatal shooting.

Kashius Haynes was arrested Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Lincoln Police Capt. Don Scheinost says investigators believe Haynes is responsible for the shooting death of 38-year-old Nathaniel Morton early Friday.

Morton was shot during an argument over gambling during a party at his home.

Morton had a wife and four children. Co-worker Katherine Freiderich says Morton always had a smile on his face and made a positive impact on others’ lives.

(AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.8 earthquake that shook northern Yellowstone National Park is the strongest there since 1980.

But the Sunday quake was still considered relatively light, and its location didn’t raise concerns about the park’s supervolcano, which experts say has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens and would have worldwide effects.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations says the earthquake occurred at 6:34 a.m. about 4 miles north-northeast of the Norris Geyser Basin. It was felt in the Montana border towns of West Yellowstone and Gardiner.

There were no immediate reports of damage. The park has few visitors and staff this time of year.

Yellowstone sees frequent earthquakes. Since Thursday, there have been at least 25 recorded.

(AP) — A 58-year-old Nebraska woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for killing a family dog that she feared.

Judy Lloyd was sentenced Friday for animal mistreatment.

Prosecutors say Lloyd intentionally ran over the 15-to-20-pound dog last July 23.

Lloyd apologized at sentencing, and she told authorities she worried the dog would attack a child.

Prosecutors say Lloyd took the dog to a rural area and tied it to a wooden pallet before running over the dog several times. She disposed of the body in a drainage canal.

(AP) — A Raymond woman who married her same-sex partner five years ago in Iowa is now petitioning the Nebraska Supreme Court to be allowed to divorce.

Margie and Bonnie Nichols married in 2009. But when they filed for divorce last year, a Lancaster County District Court judge dismissed their petition, saying the court could not grant the divorce without recognizing the marriage.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Iowa since 2009. Nebraska doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions, or domestic partnerships, under a constitutional amendment approved by 70 percent of voters in 2000.

The Nichols’ case currently is before the state Court of Appeals, but Bonnie Nichols’ attorney, Megan Mikolajczyk of Omaha, has petitioned the state Supreme Court to hear it.

(AP) — A former Hall County corrections officer is the subject of a criminal investigation, accused of having sexual contact with an inmate.

A female guard who began working at the Hall County Jail in June was fired Monday. Hall County clerk’s office records show she had been on administrative leave prior to Monday.

Nebraska State Patrol Lt. Dennis Leonard says a criminal investigation is underway.

Hall County Jail Director Fred Ruiz declined to comment.

Federal and state laws bar police officers or jail guards from having sex with anyone under arrest or in custody. Nebraska’s law says consent cannot be used as a defense.

(AP) — Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha says its handcrafted replicas of Union Station and Central High School have been stolen, along with more than 50 birdhouses, and it’s offering a $1,000 reward for their recovery.

The items were stolen from an offsite self-storage unit between March 22 and March 24.

Omaha police are investigating the theft.

The replicas of Union Station — now known as Durham Museum — and Central High School were made by Applied Imagination. The national company makes botanical architecture out of natural materials like tree bark and gourds.

The collection of one-of-a-kind birdhouses are made of state license plates and represent each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

(AP) — An elderly Omaha woman critically injured in a March 17 house fire has died from her injuries.

Authorities say Virginia Muelleman died March 20 at the Nebraska Medical Center with her family around her.

A fire department spokesman says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A funeral Mass for Muelleman was celebrated Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church.

(AP) — A 19-year-old man has been given nearly a year in jail for trying to force his way into Lincoln North Star High School last year.

Online court records say William Holloway pleaded guilty to assault, trespassing and disturbing the peace. Prosecutors dropped three other charges in exchange for Holloway’s pleas. He was sentenced on Thursday in Lancaster County District Court.

Prosecutors say Holloway and two friends fought with two guards and a school administrator on March 1, 2013, while trying to enter the school. The school was put on lockdown for a time.

Holloway was on parole for robbery, so he was returned to prison for 11 months.
