Omaha Man Dies After His Car Strikes Tree

fatal-accident(AP) — Douglas County authorities are investigating a weekend crash that killed a 23-year-old man near Omaha.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says the crash happened early Sunday morning on 72nd Street.

Officials say Brandon Fry was driving north in his Volkswagen Jetta when he struck a tree. The impact broke Fry’s vehicle in half and killed him.

A second vehicle was found in the ditch near Fry’s car, but it didn’t appear that the vehicles had hit each other. Investigators contacted the other driver, and are continuing to investigate.

Omaha Police to Sit Down to Coffee with Public

omaha-police(AP) — Omaha police want to get to know community members outside the constraints of emergency and crisis situations. To do that, they’re inviting the public to sit down for a cup of coffee.

The invitation is part of a nationwide movement by law enforcement agencies called “Coffee with a Cop.”

The concept is a simple: Police and residents come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues and build relationships over a cup of coffee.

Omaha’s first “Coffee with a Cop” will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Heartland Café in the Elkhorn community. Another will be held at 8 a.m. March 3 at McDonalds on North 30th St. in Omaha.

Old Horse That Drew Attention to Neb. Town Dies

hickman-ne(AP) — An elderly horse that drew worldwide attention for his owner’s refusal to comply with a local ordinance barring livestock inside city limits has died.

Peter Rabbit, a Morgan-quarter horse crossbreed, died in mid-January at the age of 38 — or about 120 in horse years.

Veterinarian Kelly Anderson took Peter Rabbit to live on his property just south of Hickman in 2009 following the horse’s eviction from town. Anderson says this year’s harsh winter may have contributed to the horse’s death.

The horse became a celebrity after its owner, 82-year-old Harley Scott, fought Hickman City Hall for two years in an effort to allow Peter Rabbit to live out his life in the pasture where he was born in 1976.

Omaha Tribe Hopes to Expand New Blackbird Casino

blackbird-bend-casino(AP) — The Omaha Tribe, based in Macy, Neb., has christened its new Blackbird Bend Casino in Onawa, Iowa, and is now looking to expand the $12 million complex with amenities such as a hotel, bowling alley, marina and golf course.

The tribe revealed those plans Friday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the casino.

The new casino was built next to the former Casino Omaha, which had been shut down by historic flooding along the Missouri River in 2011. The casino reopened early last year in a portion of the old casino building that formerly served as the restaurant.

The new structure sits 6 feet higher than the old building to prevent future flooding of the facility.

UNL Newspaper to Cut Print Edition

daily-nebraskan(AP) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s student newspaper will no longer print five daily weekday editions, opting instead to print two days a week to focus on its online content.

Editor-in-chief Hailey Konnath said in an editorial Friday that the newspaper, like many others, is grappling with declining readership and revenue.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/MjMRPj) that the newspaper will focus on digital reporting to expand offerings to students. The student paper plans to publish content online first and focus on interactivity and diverse perspectives.

Konnath said in the editorial that “print is just not the way most college students get news anymore. It’s not as effective and it’s not as fast as opening up the DN app on your phone or following the DN on Twitter.”

(AP) — The man charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of four people in three separate attacks last summer is suing the state prison system and others for nearly $25 million.

Nikko Jenkins says in his lawsuit filed earlier this week that prison officials ignored his pleas for mental illness treatment and that years of solitary confinement in prison led him to mutilate his face and suffer “four large facial wounds.”

The lawsuit was written in hand by Jenkins.

Jenkins has pleaded not guilty in the deaths of Juan Uribe-Pena, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Curtis Bradford and Andrea Kruger, whom prosecutors say were killed by Jenkins and others over a 10-day period. The shooting deaths came within three weeks of Jenkins’ release from prison on July 30.

Omaha Man Sentenced for Fatal Stabbing of Wife

bobby-wallace-sr(AP) — A 35-year-old Omaha man has been sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison for fatally stabbing his wife last May.

Bobby Wallace Sr. was sentenced Friday in Douglas County District Court.

Police says Wallace stabbed 24-year-old Lavern Eubanks at the home they shared in front of their four children.

Prosecutors also said Wallace also ran after a child to try stab him or her. None of the children were injured.

Wallace was found guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree assault and use of the weapon to commit a felony.

Prosecutors say he will be eligible for parole after 20 to 30 years.

Lincoln Man Who Stole ATM Gets 6-11 Years

gabriel-muratella(AP) — A 35-year-old Lincoln man who used a forklift to steal an ATM has been sentenced to prison.

Online court records say Gabriel Muratella made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded no contest to a theft charge and guilty to a charge of fleeing to avoid arrest. Prosecutors dropped two other charges in exchange for Muratella’s pleas.

Muratella was given five to 10 years for the theft and a year on the other charge. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

Prosecutors say Muratella and another man used the forklift on Feb. 28 last year to take the ATM from a Cornhusker Bank branch in Lincoln and load it into a stolen pickup.
