Train Accidents Spur Worries About Crude Transport

oil-train(AP) — At least 10 times since 2008, freight trains hauling oil across North America have derailed and spilled significant quantities of crude. Most of the accidents have touched off fires or catastrophic explosions.

The derailments released a total of almost 3 million gallons of oil, and the deadliest wreck killed 47 people in the town of Lac-Megantic, Quebec.

Those findings are from an Associated Press review of U.S. and Canadian accident records. They underscore a lesser-known danger of America’s oil boom, which is changing the global energy balance but raising urgent safety questions closer to home.

Adding to the danger is the unusually high volatility of the light, sweet crude from the fast-growing Bakken oil patch in Montana and North Dakota, where many of the oil-hauling trains originate.

UNL May Consolidate Architecture, Arts Colleges

UNL(AP) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is considering merging its analytical College of Architecture with the free-thinking College of Fine and Performing Arts.

College officials say the merger could happen in the 2015-16 school year.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman says combining the two would help the university create more diverse courses that combine different disciplines.

Two other Big Ten Conference universities have already combined arts and architecture programs. Both the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Penn State University have created successful combined colleges.

UNL officials plan to study what needs to be done to combine the colleges by July 2015.

(AP) — Authorities have identified an inmate who died in southeast Nebraska’s Gage County Detention Center as the suspect in a police standoff earlier in the week.

Deputy Gage County Attorney Amanda Spracklen-Hogan said that 36-year-old Adam Wolken was found unresponsive in his jail cell just before 4 a.m. Saturday and could not be revived. She did not say how he died.

Wolken was arrested early Thursday following a standoff with police at a Beatrice motel. Police say Wolken held two women and a 20-month old child hostage before surrendering.

11 Firms Apply to Search for New NU President

university-of-nebraska(AP) — A University of Nebraska Board of Regents committee is studying the qualifications of 11 search firms interested in finding a replacement for President J.B. Milliken, who is leaving for a new job.

University officials mailed letters to 13 executive search firms across the country on Jan. 28.

NU spokeswoman Melissa Lee says 11 responded by the Wednesday deadline.

The Board of Regents is not required to complete a competitive bidding process to hire a search firm, so the board’s executive committee will narrow the 11 to a short list of firms to be interviewed by the board.

When the firms are narrowed to four, their identities will become public record.

NU hopes to have a firm hired by the end of the month.
