Omaha Police to Get Horse That Belonged to Officer

omaha(AP) — A horse that once belonged to a former Lincoln police officer is being donated to the Omaha Police Department.

The department’s mounted patrol unit will receive Vicki Bourg’s personal horse, Skinny, on Tuesday at the Lancaster Events Center in Lincoln.

Bourg, a former Lincoln police officer and school resource officer, died in January 2011 after a cancer diagnosis. Skinny is being donated by Bourg’s husband, Jesse Bourg.

The department says the 12-year-old male horse has been ridden and trained in various environments. Skinny will go through a series of tests and training before he is officially assigned to the unit.

Neb. Inmate, Transgender Partner Lose 2nd Lawsuit

ne-state-pen(AP) — A Nebraska prison inmate and his transgendered partner have lost another round in their legal fight to be able to visit each other and get married.

A federal judge rejected the couple’s lawsuit challenging a Nebraska constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

The judge said a previous Appeals Court ruling upheld Nebraska’s marriage amendment, so the lawsuit couldn’t proceed.

The prisoner, Harold Wilson, and Gracy Sedlak also had a state lawsuit thrown out because they failed to pay an $82 court fee. Sedlak is a former inmate who previously identified as a man named John Jirovsky.

Wilson is serving a 56- to 170-year prison sentence on attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual assault charges.

She says 20 people were taken to area hospitals, and all but two have been treated and released. The circumstances of the accident and the conditions of the hospitalized workers have not been released.

methodist-womens-hospital(AP) — Bianca and Jose Garcia of South Sioux City are adjusting to their new family, which jumped from four to nine with the July births of their quintuplets — only the third set ever born in Nebraska.

Marah, Arleth, Jimena, Rosalyn and Christobal — the only boy — were born about 12 weeks premature on July 25 at Woman’s Methodist Hospital in Omaha. The quintuplets joined their 9- and 7-year-old older brothers.

Born with health risks, the first babies — Marah and Christobal — weren’t discharged until Sept. 27. On Oct. 20, Arleth and Jimena went home, and Rosalyn was discharged the next day.

The Garcias say they’re taking one day at a time, but that all of the babies are now healthy.

Neb. High Court Denies New Murder Trial to 2 Men

ne-supreme-court(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has denied new trials for two Omaha men convicted in the 2008 shooting death of another man outside an Omaha American Legion hall.

Darrin Smith and Jeremy Foster filed separate appeals seeking to have their convictions of first-degree murder, assault and weapons counts reversed and to have new, separate trials.

The two were convicted in a single trial in 2009 in the November 2008 shooting death of 25-year-old Victor Henderson, who died from a single gunshot to his neck that he received in a hail of bullets. Four others were injured in the shooting.

On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed their convictions, denying their assertions of various errors by the trial court and saying neither Smith nor Foster was prejudiced by their joint trial.

(AP) — A former Malcolm dog breeder has received two years of probation and been banned from owning dogs while serving that sentence.

According to court records, Julia Hudson was sentenced on Friday. Hudson pleaded no contest in September to a misdemeanor charge of cruel neglect.

Authorities say state regulators discovered 62 dogs and 13 puppies in her care that were living in squalid conditions, with their cages crusted in feces in urine. Inspectors with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture say many of the dogs lacked shelter, and water left for them outside had frozen.

Most of the dogs were turned over to animal rescue groups.
