HHS Head to Testify on Troubled Website Rollout

Kathleen-Sebelius(AP) — As the public face of President Barack Obama’s signature health care program, Kathleen Sebelius has become the target for attacks over its botched rollout. Republicans want her to resign and even some Democrats — while not mentioning Sebelius — say someone should be fired.

For months, Sebelius, the Health and Human Services secretary, projected confidence that the online health insurance markets would open on time Oct. 1 in all 50 states and that a website that’s the key to public enrollments would be ready. Instead, it’s been plagued by technical problems.

How much Sebelius knew about the website’s problems, and when, are key questions she’ll face Wednesday at a House hearing.

Sebelius has acknowledged that the website launch has been rocky. So far, she appears to have the president’s backing.

Mini Space Shuttle Skids Off Runway During Test Flight

nasa-good(AP) — A new, smaller version of NASA’s space shuttle is recuperating from a rough first landing.

The Dream Chaser space plane is being designed by Sierra Nevada Corp. It’s intended to one day carry space station astronauts.

The Nevada-based company tested a full-scale model at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Saturday. A helicopter dropped the unmanned craft from 12,500 feet. Everything worked well until the end, when the left landing gear deployed too late. The test vehicle skidded off the runway.

Company space systems chief Mark Sirangelo says damage was minor. He says the left gear was still attached and the tire wasn’t even shredded.

Sirangelo says the mishap is likely due to mechanical failure. He says it shouldn’t hold up plans for a piloted landing test next year.

Omaha Fire Dept. to Wait on Future of Captain Busted with Weed, Gun

omaha-f-d(AP) — The Omaha Fire Department says it will wait before making a decision on the future of a captain accused of having marijuana, alcohol and a handgun during a traffic stop.

The department says in a statement Monday it’s disappointed in the alleged crimes of 41-year-old Frank J. Guido, of Bellevue, but it will wait for the judicial system to go through its due process before commenting or making any decision on his status.

Guido is accused of having a small amount of marijuana, an open container of alcohol and a handgun that he didn’t quickly disclose when he was stopped on Aug. 30. The department says Guido told fire management about the incident immediately after it happened.

Guido faces two misdemeanors and he was ticketed. He has pleaded not guilty.

Officials Approve High Number of Loans in Nebraska

small-business-administration(AP) — Officials say Nebraska has recorded the fourth-highest number of loans in the state’s history.

The U.S. Small Business Administration says the agency approved more than 400 loans for $122.6 million in loan guarantees through nearly 80 banks, credit unions and certified development companies. The numbers account for the fiscal year that ended at the end of September.

The loans ranged from $7,700 to $5 million. The average amount was about $305,000, and more than half were for $150,000 or less.

The top small business industries in Nebraska receiving SBA-guaranteed loans are accommodation and food services, retail trade, health care and social assistance, manufacturing, and construction.

Neb. Tribe Member Sentenced for Stealing Money

Winnebago-Tribe(AP) — A member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has been given five years of probation for stealing money from the tribal court.

U.S. District Court Judge John M. Gerrard said in a news release Monday that 30-year-old Christi Freemont, of Winnebago, was ordered to pay more than $8,500 in restitution. She must also perform 50 hours of community service.

Freemont was convicted of embezzlement from the Winnebago Tribal Court, where she was employed as a clerk. She is accused of using a court debit card to make unauthorized cash withdrawals at ATMs and personal purchases at a Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee grocery store.

Platte County’s Public Defender Funding Criticized

ACLU(AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska says Platte County must increase funding of its public defender’s office.

The group sent a letter to the county Board of Supervisors earlier this month, saying the county has to increase staffing for the office in order to comply with state and federal law.

ACLU director Amy Miller says the defense and prosecution deserve equal funding for a fair process.

Deputy County Attorney Elizabeth Lay says the Board of Supervisors is taking the concerns seriously and that the board’s judiciary committee is checking into the matter.

Fire Damages Landmark Omaha Restaurant

fire(AP) — A fire has damaged a landmark Omaha restaurant building.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Sunday at the site of the former Mister C’s steakhouse in northeast Omaha. A police helicopter’s thermal imaging system was put to work helping firefighters attack hot spots.

No injuries have been reported. The fire cause is being investigated.

The restaurant was one of several operated by the Caniglia family. It was opened as Royal Boy in 1954 and became Mister C’s in the 1970s.

It closed in 2007.

Proposal Would Trim Fremont’s Immigration Law

fremont(AP) — The Fremont City Council is scheduled to consider amending an ordinance that would remove provisions of the city’s ban on renting to people who aren’t in the U.S. legally

The proposal would remove sections requiring occupancy permits and enforcement of other housing provisions. The proposal is scheduled for a first reading on the council’s agenda for Tuesday.

City Attorney Paul Payne says council member Todd Hoppe asked him to prepare the proposal.

Fremont voters approved a measure in 2010 that bans hiring or renting to people who can’t prove they are in the country legally. In June the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a previous ruling against the measure.

Military Test of Body Fat Faces Criticism

the-pentagon-2(AP) — Doctors say a number of military personnel are turning to liposuction to remove excess fat from around the waist so they can pass the Pentagon’s body fat test.

Some service members say they have no other choice because the Defense Department’s method of estimating body fat is weeding out not just flabby physiques but bulkier, muscular builds.

A number of fitness experts and doctors agree, and they’re calling for the military’s fitness standards to be revamped.

Defense officials say only a small fraction of those who exceed body fat limits perform well on physical fitness tests.

The checks are designed to ensure troops are ready for the rigors of combat. Pentagon officials say the military doesn’t condone surgically altering one’s body to pass the test, though liposuction isn’t prohibited.

$1M Lottery Ticket Sold in Northeast Nebraska

powerball(AP) — A $1 million Powerball lottery ticket has been sold in northeast Nebraska.

Nebraska Lottery officials say the ticket was sold at J & J’s Pronto on North Highway 77 in Homer. The ticket matched the first five numbers but not the Powerball number in Saturday’s drawing. The numbers were 4, 6, 34, 49 and 56, with the Powerball number of 29.

Officials say the winner hasn’t yet claimed the prize.

No one won the jackpot on Saturday night, so it will be around $50 million for Wednesday’s drawing.
