Marvin D. Peterson

Marvin D. Peterson, 89, of North Platte, passed away July 30, 2017, at North Platte Care Center.

He was born on June 11, 1928, to John and Maggie (Wilhelmson) Peterson in Hayes Center. He graduated from Hayes Center High School with the class of 1948.

On May 3, 1950, Marvin was united in marriage to Norma Jean Curran. He worked on the Sutherland dam for a few years before being employed by North Platte Public Schools, eventually becoming the head of the maintenance department. Marvin was hired in 1968 by Union Pacific Railroad as a carman, retiring in 1988.

He loved to garden, hunt and fish, and he taught his family to respect the outdoors. His faith was his compass and he attended Parkview Community Church of the Nazarene. Marvin was the kindest and most gentle husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Charles “Whitey” Peterson; sister, LaVada Moore; and great-grandson, Noah Ramos.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean; son, Douglas D. (Brenda Grant) Peterson; two daughters, Debbie (Rod) Miller and Pamela Peterson, all of North Platte; sister, Barbara Gigax of Hayes Center; two sisters-in-law, Jane Peterson of Texas and Marilyn Peterson of Cozad; grandchildren, Michael (Christy) Miller, John (Jodi) Miller and Sunny (Josh) Yocum-Whitmore; great-grandchildren, Micah, Shayla, Tanner, Shaylee, Jaden, Gage, Caden, Allie, Connor, Declan, Graham, Carrissa, Midgey and Myah; great-great-grandchildren, Torran, Tracen and Easton; and a special friend, Don Lakey.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3, at Parkview Community Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Jack Atteberry officiating. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will be at a later date. Warren David Kennedy

Warren David Kennedy, age 86, of Sutherland, NE, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Great Plains Health.

Warren was born June 15, 1931, to Louis David “Dave” and Myrtie Bell (Humphrey) Kennedy on the family farm north of Sutherland. He grew up on the farm and attended Sutherland Public School, graduating in 1949. In 1951, Warren enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. Following his discharge in ’54, he returned to Sutherland and farmed with his dad, which he did all his life.

On May 26, 1957, Warren was united in marriage to Geraldine Ann “Gerry” Schwieger in Grand Island, NE. They continued living and working on the family farm where they raised three children, Sherry, Larry and Kenneth, and had celebrated 60 years of marriage. Warren loved farming and liked to see his feedlot full of cattle. He was able to live the dream of farming with his dad, his sons and his grandkids.

Warren was active in the Sutherland community, serving on the Sutherland Co-op Board of Directors, the School Board, and 4-H Club where he was a club leader and started the Beefmakers 4-H Club in 1968 with Jim Colburn; the club is still active today. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Along with farming, Warren loved fishing and taking fishing trips to Canada where he was also a founding owner of KenRo Fish Camp. Most importantly, he dearly loved his family, especially his grandkids, and always took an interest in their activities. Warren will be deeply missed and remembered for his great sense of humor.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Gerry, of Sutherland; children, Sherry (Frank) Thompson, of Columbus, NE, and Larry (Annette) Kennedy, and Kenneth (Renee) Kennedy, all of Sutherland; his stepmother, Rosie Kennedy, of Sutherland; grandchildren, Cassidee (Eric) Grubaugh, Sean (Adrienne) Kennedy, Jess Thompson, Sarah Kennedy (fiancé, Ben Rivera), David Kennedy, Samantha Kennedy and Talon Crago; great-grandson, Breccan Kennedy; sisters, Virginia (Lon) Wisdom and Jeanie Kennedy (Ross Dinwiddie), and sister-in-law, Iris Kennedy, all of Sutherland; and other family.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Myrtie Kennedy; brother, Don Kennedy; and granddaughter, Katie Kennedy.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at the Sutherland Presbyterian Church. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Warren Kennedy Memorial, which will be designated later. Dolores Marquez

Dolores Marquez, 96, of North Platte passed away July 30, 2017 at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

Dolores was born on April 4, 1921 in Muzquiz Coahuila, Mexico to Damaso and Maria (de los Angeles) Maldonado.  She grew up in Mexico; her husband’s family were migrant workers and Dolores stayed in Hershey, NE when her children were school age so they didn’t have to travel with the workers.  She married Placido Marquez in North Platte in 1954.

Dolores enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and especially her flower gardens.  She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, and a very hard worker.

Survivors include daughters, Mary (Dr. Jerry) Edelman of Jordan, NM and Olga (John) Caudillo of North Platte; son, Antonio Marquez of Stockton, Ca; grandchildren, Dr. Kent (Sherry) Edelman of Clive, IA, Dr. Kevin (Jill) Edelman of Eagan, MN, Kim Edelman of Minneapolis, MN, and Greg Caudillo of North Platte; great-grandchildren, Lucy, Natalie,  and Annie Edelman of Clive, IA, Jake, and Tommy Edelman of Eagan, MN, Gregory and Marcus Caudillo of North Platte; brother, Milo Maldonado of Mexico; several nieces, nephews, and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Placido; and a son, Federico.

Betty June Dowhower

Betty June Dowhower, age 89, of North Platte, NE, passed away at Linden Court on Friday, July 28, 2017.

Betty was born January 24, 1928, to Carl Albert and Mary Aileen Witter Halverson in Wellfleet, NE. The family later moved to Maxwell, NE, then North Platte where Betty graduated from North Platte High School in 1945.

On August 1, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Raymond Leonard Dowhower in Oberlin, KS, and they made their home in North Platte. The couple loved riding their motorcycle and traveling on vacations. They later bought a motor home which they enjoyed traveling in. Betty and Raymond were married for nearly 57 years when he passed away in 2003.

Betty had worked as a clerk at Montgomery Ward’s for many years. She was an avid golfer and liked crocheting, knitting and making afghans for the Senior Center. Betty especially loved her cats and backyard squirrels.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Randy) Blake, of North Platte, Carol (Mark) Kauffman, of Keensburg, CO, and Allison Yeagley, of North Platte; 10 grandchildren, Brandi Weinman, Clayton Weinman, Kyle Weinman, Traci (Shawn) Peterson, Kris (Ed) Judd, Jeri (Dennis) Rector, Matthew Kauffman, Jason (Tina) Yeagley, Jacob (Rhonda) Yeagley and Sarah (Andrew) Eshleman; many great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.

Along with her husband, Raymond, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Carl, Sr. and Mary Halverson; sisters, Barbara Bare and Dorothy Foster; brothers, Kenneth, Carl, Jr., James, Richard, Gordan, Gale and Don Halverson; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

Cremation was chosen. Graveside Memorial Service will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Marjorie Ann Citta

Marjorie Ann Citta, age 88 of Sutherland, passed away Friday July 28, 2017 at Centennial Park Nursing Home in North Platte.

Marge was born on July 21, 1929 in Omaha, NE to Bernard and Margaret (Simanzik) Dose.  She graduated from Bellevue High School.  She married Joe Citta on June 5, 1948 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Omaha and the couple lived in Bellevue for 40 years where she worked for the Bellevue Public Schools for many years.  They moved to Hershey in 1976 where Joe was a shift supervisor at the Gerald Gentleman Station.  They moved to Sutherland in 1988 where she was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as well as the Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and was an RSVP volunteer.  She loved to knit and crochet, was an excellent cook and baker, enjoyed polka music and dancing and loved her black Labradors and fishing.  Marge and Joe are the center of their family and she always had a kind ear for anybody who needed her; she will be dearly missed.

Marge is survived by Joe, her husband of 69 years; children Joe Jr. (Sue) Citta of Columbus, Linda (Patrick Scolla) Citta of Fallston, Maryland; grandchildren David (Lisa) Citta, Jessica (Jim ) Reay of Lincoln, Jason (Meghan) Citta of Hershey, Joe (Amber) Citta III of Columbus, Debbie (Tom) Ford of Omaha; great grandchildren Lane and Sam Citta, Emma and Ashley Gartner, Miah Ford, Eastyn and Joe IV Citta, Owen and Ella Reay; daughter-in-law Wendy Citta of Lincoln; sister-in-law Lou Dose of Omaha; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Margaret Dose; son David; and brothers George and Hank.

Andy J. Nielsen

Andy J. Nielsen, 91, died 27 July 2017 at North Platte Care Center in North Platte, NE.  He was born on a farm at Fontanelle, Iowa on November 28, 1925 to Andy and Ruby (Cooper) Nielsen, the youngest of three children.

He was formerly of Iowa, where he grew up and while still a boy, he moved to Omaha, NE with his parents at the beginning of WWII.

He graduated from Omaha Technical High School in December 1943 and entered military service in February 1944. After basic training, he volunteered for Airborne training and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.  He served at Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944.  He later served as a member of the Honor Guard for General Dwight Eisenhower at the United States Forces European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany with the 82nd A/B Division.

He returned to the United States in 1946 and was honorably discharged.  Andy was very proud of his military service, especially his time with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne.

He was married in 1947 to the love of his life for over 62 years, Carla M. Wright of Wayne, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Teresa J. Simmons of Greeley, CO, Jeri R. Burns of Pierre, S.D., Shelley K. Nielsen of Greeley, CO, Margo D. Cox of Grand Junction, CO and Mark A. (Julie) Nielsen of North Platte, NE (10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren).

He served ten years with the Nebraska State Patrol, 1949-1959; Nebraska Game and Parks Commission 1960-1988 with service in the cities of Hastings, McCook, Lyons, Fremont and Lincoln, NE.  He was Conservation Officer, Law Enforcement Supervisor, Pilot, Boating Law Administrator with the Game and Parks Commission, retiring in 1988.

Andy was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother, Robert, who died in a plane crash on Guam in 1949 where he served as a pilot with the United States Army Air Force.  His sister, Helen Harrison, of Omaha, NE died in August 2000.

Andy belonged to the Methodist Church, American Legion, DAV, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Tangier Shrine in Omaha, Nebraska.

He earned his private pilot’s license in 1946 after discharge from the military and subsequently obtained his commercial, flight instructors and instrument ratings.  His hobby was exercise, specifically weight lifting, which he did 2 hours a day, 3 days a week.

After retirement in 1988, he looked for things to do, as he put it “to keep life interesting.”  He ran a marathon, earned a black belt in Karate, bungee jumped from a hot air balloon and made a parachute jump over fifty years after his discharge from the military to see “if he still had the guts.”

Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at a later date.  Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in care of arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com

Kyle Andrew Scott MacDonald

Kyle Andrew Scott MacDonald, 29, of North Platte passed away July 25, 2017 at his home.  He was born on June 6, 1988 to Scott and Colleen (Johnston) MacDonald.

Kyle graduated from North Platte High School.  He worked at Pizza Hut, and was the assistant manager at Subway, Qdoba, and most recently worked at Another Round Restaurant.  He had a passion for Godzilla, Alf, and anything outside of this world.  He was very musical, being able to cross all musical genres.  Kyle was very creative and humorous; he loved children and was able to relate to their level.  He had a passion for reptiles, having many through the years.

Survivors include his parents, Scott (Shari) MacDonald and Colleen (Don) Dubry all of North Platte; siblings, Ryan MacDonald and Adam MacDonald both of North Platte; grandmother, Cheryl MacDonald of North Platte; nephew, Bentlie MacDonald of North Platte; step-brothers, Shawn Scheibe of North Platte, and Matt (Lexi) Mueller of Kearney; step-sister, Lyndsey (Lane) Hogeland of Colorado Springs, CO; step-nephews, Liam Hogeland and Jace Mueller; numerous other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Leonard and Mabel Johnston, Judy and Bill Dubry, and Gary MacDonald; aunt, Cheryl Johnston; and cousins, Sherry Grandel, Shane Price, and Charles Johnston.

Family services will be held 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2017 at Colleen and Don’s house, 1402 East 6th.  The family requests guests to wear KASM shirts.  In lieu of flowers balloons are requested and a covered dish for the meal.  Adams & Swanson Funeral Home are assisting with arrangements.

Justin Robert Noffsinger

Justin Robert Noffsinger, 35, of Holyoke, Colorado, died on July 18, 2017, in Holyoke.

He was born on April 8, 1982, in Wray, Colorado, to Robert and Lori Noffsinger. He attended school at New Life Academy in Eckley, Colorado, and the public schools in Wray. Following high school, he attended Northwest Technical College in Goodland, Kansas, where he received his degree in network technology. He also went on to complete Cat 5 and Cisco Certification which he used when he worked in Holyoke; Ogallala; Monte Vista, Colorado; and Denver.

He particularly enjoyed his job in Denver, at Radio Resources, where he maintained radio communication for the Denver Broncos and several of the Super Bowl games.

In 2006, he was hired by Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte, where he worked as a conductor for three years. In 2009, he formed a business with his brother, Mike, and they brokered freight for many produce companies in the Midwest.

Justin enjoyed golfing, riding ATV’s, camping, boating, jet skiing, target shooting and spending time with friends and family. He loved to volunteer and give back to his community. He helped build several Habitat for Humanity homes and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in North Platte. He was a wonderful father, brother, son and friend.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Erna Brueggeman; grandparents, Delbert and Evelyn Noffsinger and Clarice Ann Brueggeman.

He is survived by his daughters, Krista and Madison Noffsinger; their mother, Carmen Noffsinger of Holyoke; his parents, Robert and Lori Noffsinger of Wray; brother, Michael (Alison) Noffsinger, and their children, Anthony and Kateri of North Platte; sister, Erica Noffsinger, Jeff Rogers and family of Meriden, Kansas; grandfather, Dale Brueggeman of Holyoke; great-aunts, Wilma Brueggeman and Dorothy Brueggeman of Wray and Dola Davis of Overton, Nevada; and a multitude of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Krista and Madison Noffsinger Educational Fund C/O Wray State Bank.

Services were on July 22, 2017, at New Life Christian Center in Eckley, with Jim Hoganson officiating. A private family inurnment will be at the Grandview Cemetery, Wray, at a later date. Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home, Wray, was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Nadean Burnett Death Notice

Eugene “Gene” Bill Braun

Eugene “Gene” Bill Braun, 67, of Colonia, New Jersey, formerly of North Platte, died July 21, 2017, of cancer, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Eugene, the son of William G. Braun and Bessie Adams Braun, was born on May 3, 1950, in North Platte. He was a 1968 graduate of North Platte High School.

Gene served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He resided in Carteret, New Jersey, from 1978 to 2005, when he settled in Colonia, New Jersey.

Gene was a police captain employed by the City of Linden, New Jersey, Police Department for 40 years, and he retired in 2013.

He was a member of the Linden Police Bean Association Local 42, a member of the Superior Officers Association and a firearms instructor for the City of Linden Police Department for many years.

Gene was active in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy cleanup and since 2005, he has really had the opportunity to enjoy the art and the love of golfing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jason R. Braun, in 2012; and grandmother, Amye Wilhelm of North Platte.

Gene is survived by his wife, Nancy A. Sirochman Braun; son, Christopher S. (Cynthia) Braun; two daughters, Erika L. (Mark) Kitz and Ashley M. (Derek) DuBois; three sisters, Lois Braun, Terri Gossett and Linda McDermott, all formerly of North Platte; four grandchildren, Charlie Kitz, Tyler Kitz, Andrew Kitz and Olivia Braun; an aunt, Sharron Hollen, of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews.
